Tourney format 6/6/6 is relatively new to Alaska and softball in general, the main question asked is “How do you play?”. Below is a brief description of the basics of how we plan to use the 6/6/6 during this tournament. Teams Each team consists of a minimum of 6 players on the roster. However a roster can include up to 10 players. A game lineup must consist of at least 6 but up to 8 players with an even number of females and males. The extra players over 6 are used like the EP in a regular game, they bat in the lineup and can be swapped into the fielding positions as per the norm. Hitting When a team is up to bat, all normal ASA rules apply with the exception of base running rules, because there are fewer players there is an opportunity for a base runner’s position in the order to come up, rather than be an automatic out the base runner hits and any player not on the bases can replace the hitter on the base, this means courtesy runners are unlimited. Team bats until 3 outs are made by the defending teams. Since this is coed the male/female alternating batting order is still in use. Playing the field Once you have made 3 outs, you send 5 players (any in the lineup) to the 5 available outfield positions. These positions are C, LF, LC, RC and RF. A team plays these positions until 3 outs are made by the new team at bat. Once 3 outs are made, the outfield team puts 5 players in the 5 infield positions which include 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, and Pitcher. These infield positions are played until the new team batting has 3 outs. This will conclude a full inning, during the even innings the order reverses itself and the batting team moves to infield, infield to outfield and outfield into hit. A full game consists of 4 full innings or 65 minutes, meaning teams bat 4 times, play the outfield 4 times, and play the infield 4 times. This format allows for players to play multiple positions and get multiple at-bats in one single game. As always Coed rules apply so infield/outfield is made up of 2 men and 2 women. At the end of a game, just like a regular game, your run total will determine the winner and loser. However, since there are 3 teams involved in each game, a points system is established. The team with the most runs scored receives 3 points, while the team that scored the 2nd most runs will receive 2 points. The team with the fewest runs scored will receive a point. If two teams score the same amount of runs after 4 innings, they will both receive the same amount of points for the place finished. (Example, if both teams tie for 2nd, they each receive 2 points.) The 2nd round will be based on points accumulated in round robin play. Tiebreakers for advancement into the 2nd round will be determined by total runs scored in tournament.
