Objective
• Develop a design guide and training program suitable for use by the marine industry
for the design of large, high speed aluminum ship structures.
• POP: 12 months from time of award ( 24 Sept 2010 – 23 Sept 2011)

Task 1*
• Schedule and participate in project kick off meeting to review the project scope and
objectives with the Ship Structure Committee (SSC) technical committee.
• Organize and conduct kick off meeting – Wednesday, 22 Sept 2010, Gryphon (80 M
St.)
*Per TI #2010-134 signed 30 Aug 2010

Task 2*
•
Collect project technical data and industry best practice information. Collect and review open
literature, class information, aluminum industry guidance and analytic[al] tools to produce an
understanding of the current state of knowledge and practice. Based upon this review, develop an
outline for the technical guide and circulate to the project technical committee for review and
comment.
•
Gryphon has a library of books, journal articles, specifications, design guides, etc., and we are in
the process of obtaining additional relevant references.

Task 3*
• After having received and consider[ed] feedback from the project technical
committee, develop a guidance manual to support the design of large high speed
aluminum ships. The guide will provide information related to materials and
welding, detailing, marine loads on high speed craft and how these influence fatigue,
fracture and ultimate strength of hull structures. The subject matter will be
described at three levels of detail (e.g. rules of thumb, closed form and numerical
modeling).
• Design guide will be developed with several focus areas (next slide).
*Per TI #2010-134 signed 30 Aug 2010

Resolution of the SOW Differences
• SOW received from TPOC contains the following:
▫ (3.1.1): “Industry input into the guide development shall be a priority.” (not
included in signed TI)
▫ (3.1.3): “The design guide shall consider operational loading with attention to
localized pressure fluctuations, machinery to hull connection interface issues and
shaft line / propeller loads of unique concern to high speed aluminum vessels.”
(not included in signed TI)
▫ Gryphon recognizes that industry input is important to the success of this task
and that the loading types described in 3.1.3 are commonly associated with high
speed aluminum vessels. Therefore, we recommend including industry input and
design guidance concerning the loading described in 3.1.3.

Resolution of the SOW Differences (cont’d)
• SOW received from TPOC contains the following:
▫ (3.1.5): “The design guide shall be in a format readily adaptable to adoption by a
standards development organization. Adherence to the form and style standards
from ASTM International’s ‘Blue Book’ is suggested. “ (not included in signed TI
and differs from the next item)
▫ (5.4): “The Contractor shall provide a print ready master final report and an
electronic copy, including the above deliverables, formatted as per the SSC Report
Style Manual.” (not included in signed TI and differs from previous item)
▫ Gryphon recommends adherence to the SSC Report Style Manual for the Design
Manual.

Resolution of the SOW Differences (cont’d)
• SOW received from TPOC contains the following:
▫ (3.3): “It is expected that the proposed technical document, training course
syllabus preparation and delivery could be completed in an 18 month time frame.
The delivery of a course from the course materials prepared in this project would
be completed after the completion of the first of the year of the [contract] (e.g. in
months 14 to 18).” (differs from signed TI)
▫ Gryphon notes the POP, as listed in the signed TI, is 12 months.
