Generating new ideas
to meet the needs of future technology
As the world looks towards
solar energy as a focus for the
future of power generation,
Pentair Valves & Controls is
already meeting the challenge
with an extensive range of key
products specifically suited
to the thermal transfer and
high temperature applications
required for this rapidly
expanding sector of the
industry.
Producing energy from the sun’s
rays is a straightforward process,
with direct solar radiation being
concentrated and collected by a range
of technologies such as:
Solar power is in the midst of a boom.
Over 5,800 MW of solar power projects
are in the planning stages worldwide,
with the majority expected to come
online by 2014.
- Dish Stirling technology
The potential is huge in many regions
of the world, given that one square
kilometer of land is enough to generate
as much as 100-300 gigawatt hours
(GWh) of solar electricity per year using
solar thermal energy. That’s equivalent
to the annual production of a 50 MW
conventional coal- or gas-fired mid
load power plant.
-Concentrating Solar Power (CSP)
-Integrated Solar Combined Cycle
System (ISCC)
-Compact Linear Fresnel Reflectors
(CLFR)
-Central Receiver Systems (CRS) or
solar tower
Whichever of these is used to generate
power, you can rely on Pentair Valves
& Controls to provide the products
and services which will enhance the
process and maximize results. Our
valves and actuators are proven in
critical high temperature applications,
and specifically in Heat Transfer Fluid
(HTF), molten salt, steam, feed and
circulation water processes.

energy storage
Trough technology bases its operation
on solar tracking and the concentration
of solar rays on receiving tubes with
high thermal efficiency, located
on the focal line of the cylinder. In
these tubes, a heat transmitting fluid
(HTF, heat transfer fluid) such as
synthetic oil is heated to approximately
400°C by the concentrated solar rays.
This oil is pumped through a series of
heat exchangers to produce steam.
The heat present with such steam is
converted into electric energy on a
conventional steam turbine. Energy
storage is necessary for successful
implementation of CSP technology.

Central receiver
system
Solar tower systems operate through
a field of heliostats that reflect solar
radiation onto a central receiving
tower. The heliostats are two-axle
tracking mirrors that follow the sun
over the course of the day. At the
receiver, the solar radiation can be
concentrated up to 600 times the
normal solar radiation. The radiation
energy is transferred to a working fluid
that flows through the tower.
After absorbing the heat energy at the
tower, the working fluid can generate
steam to run a turbine and produce
electricity.

Generating solutions
to help our customers thrive
Heat stored in the earth
will play a major part in the
generation of power in the
decades to come. Geothermal
power has the benefits of
being cost effective, reliable
and sustainable. Because no
major fuel source is required
other than for pumping, it is
also immune to fluctuations in
cost and supply.
Our specialist teams and experience
make Pentair Valves & Controls your
ideal partner in geothermal power
generation. Whether your plant utilizes
a flash steam, binary or combined
cycle system, we can provide you with
solutions to optimize and control your
operation, reducing your costs and
increasing your uptime.
Geothermal energy currently produces
enough electricity to meet the needs
of more than 60 million people across
24 countries. By 2015, around 36 GW of
geothermal power is expected to be in
use worldwide.
One of the key drivers of investment
in geothermal power generation is its
environmental benefits. Geothermal
facilities emit only steam, because no
combustion takes place. Emissions
of nitrous oxide, hydrogen sulfide,
sulfur dioxide, particulate matter and
carbon dioxide are extremely low when
compared to fossil fuel emissions. In
addition, these facilities require only
about 11% of the land area used by a
coal power plant (per gigawatt hour
generated).
Geothermal power is not limited by
resources or atmospheric conditions
and can be a reliable source of power
for decades. Pentair’s range of
valves and actuators is designed and
engineered with this reliability and
longevity in mind. We are experienced
in managing the most aggressive
fluids and have developed solutions
for corrosive, saline and abrasive
environments – while providing zero
leakage. These solutions include
NACE specification.
Our staff of engineers will not only
help you choose the optimal solution
for your application but also work
with you through the entire process.
Given the nature of geothermal
power generation, plants can differ
significantly in terms of operating
conditions, design and requirements.
Our unparalleled technical support
assures smooth installation and
commissioning, and our wide range
of solutions enables you to choose
the best option to build or retrofit
your plant.

Flash steam
power plant
Flash steam power plants are the
most common type of geothermal
power station. Hot water is pumped
at high pressure to the surface.
This requires valves and actuators
capable of handling conditions.
The heated water flashes to steam on
reaching the cooler surface, powering
a turbine. Once the steam has cooled,
it is returned to the geothermal
reservoir.

Binary cycle power plants represent
the newest technology in geothermal
applications. A heat exchanger is
used to transfer energy from the hot
water to a heat transfer fluid with a
low boiling point, improving efficiency.
The water from the earth never comes
into contact with the turbines, which
minimizes emissions of trace gases
into the atmosphere.

Generating efficiency
throughout the conventional power plant
Coal is here to stay, with the
proportion of world power
produced from coal forecast
to increase from 40 to 45% in
the next 20 years.
Pentair’s application, metallurgy and
welding specialists focus on delivering
severe service isolation, control and
system protection solutions to enable
the plant design engineer and operator
to maximize electricity generation from
coal, while limiting greenhouse gas
emissions.
The way forward lies in improving
plant efficiency. This is where Pentair
Valves & Controls has taken the
lead. As well as providing products
that meet the needs of traditional
coal powered technology, we’re
also playing a key role in developing
the new breed of supercritical and
ultra-supercritical power stations.
These operate at increasingly higher
temperatures and pressures, resulting
in higher efficiencies and significant
CO2 reductions.
