Math Game:
Top It!!
Dear Families,
Here is another game we played this week at school. The game is called “Top
It.” You may know this game from your childhood called “War.” This week we
played the game with partners to work on number sense and addition.
Materials Needed: One deck of playing cards (remove Jokers, Kings, Queens,
Jacks and Aces)
Players Needed: 2 to 6 players
Directions:

Divide the cards evenly between players.

Keep your pile face down (don’t peek!).

At the same time each player turns over their top card.

The player that has the highest number wins and gets to take all of the
cards played.

Repeat.

If you run out of cards, flip over your collected cards and use those.

If you both turn over the same number you have “War.” Place another card
face down on top of your first card. Turn over one more card. The player
with the highest card takes ALL the cards (even the turned down cards).

Keep playing until one player has no cards OR play with a time limit and when
time is up count and see who has the most cards.

Variation to make it harder: Flip two cards EVERY turn and add them
together. The highest answer wins!
