Proposal for Team Rankings on the USSA Scored and non-scored Software
8.20.14
Background:
Create a Team concept in the sport of alpine skiing in an effort to build club affiliation and camaraderie.
Some current examples of team scoring are the Nations Cup at the World Cup, Hoelder Cup at the World
Junior Championships, medal count at the Olympics and WSC and the collegiate team scoring at the
NCAA.
This proposal is intended to build a team concept into every USSA race by developing a scoring system
that produces a team result page. Fun and inspiring club rivalries would be developed over time. Clubs
would have a longer lasting presence as the athletes develop.
Team Scoring System:
The top 30 athletes in every race would be scored on a system in which 30 points are awarded for first
down to 1 point awarded for 30th. The rationale for this system is to give more emphasis to the 5th
scorer relative to the whole team. The current World Cup point scoring system does the opposite; the
current World Cup scoring system emphasizes top individual finishes through a scoring system that
awards 100 points for first and 1 point for 30th.
The top 5 athletes from each gender would be counted and scored based on their point accumulation.
The point total for the top 5 individuals from each team would determine the team score in a particular
race. In the event of a tie, the best single finish would be used until the tie was broken. Since only 5
athletes are scored, the larger teams would not necessarily have an advantage. There would be no
purging of athletes ranked 6+ within their team. Therefore athletes not included in the team score
would displace others and therefore would be contributing to the overall outcome of the team result if
they finished in the top 30.
Requirements:
The result software would need to pull the club or affiliation when athletes are entered. This category
already exists in the software program. The software would compile team point accumulations based on
the team scoring system and produce a report or result page for the teams by gender/race. The team
rank and points accumulated would be reported. Overall Team results combining boys and girls as well
as multiple events would be up to the host site to calculate.
TD would sign off on individual and team results for each gender to attain an official race result.
Team awards would help motivate and provide credibility for the team results.
