LSYS Tryout Explanation

LSYS Try-Outs:
Travel Try-Outs schedule is posted on the website.
All players are required to try-out for their age-appropriate team,
and, whenever possible, travel players will play on their age
appropriate travel team. See example below.
No player will be permitted to try-out for an older team without
approval by the board, except as follows: a current player that is
playing up one age group as a primary or secondary player is
permitted to try-out with their current team, but must also try-out
with their age appropriate team. All primary players rostered in the
st
st
previous Travel soccer year (August 1 – July 31 ) shall be
permitted to try-out with their current team and shall be evaluated
and treated as an age appropriate L-S District player. An L-S
District player is a player that resides within the physical borders
of the L-S School District. To better make competitive teams,
LSYS reserves the right to include 20-30% of rostered players
from outside the district. Older than U13 teams has no limit of
non-residential players.
After Travel try-outs, if enough age appropriate players have
registered (minimum 11 players for 11 v 11 or a minimum 8
players for 8 v 8 and 7 for 7v7) the team will be formed and the top
11 players for 11 v 11 and the top 8 players for 8 v 8 and top 7
players for 7 v 7 shall be placed on the travel team roster as the
base roster. If greater than 11 (11v11) or 8 (8v8) or 7 (7v7) have
registered, then the Head Coach will be contacted to see how many
additional players they desire (maximum 18 players for 11 v 11
and maximum 14 players for 8 v 8 with maximum 13 players for 7
v 7. Within 7 days, the Head Coach will provide the names of the
additional players to be added to the base roster.
Age groups may be combined in order to maximize the number of
players that can play. In accordance with EPYSA by-laws, a
minimum of ten age appropriate players for 11 v 11 and a
minimum of seven age appropriate players for 8 v 8 or 7 v 7 are
required to register a team for play.
If it is necessary for a player to play up one age group, first
consideration shall be given to the grade appropriate players, and
then to players in order of their tryout scores. A younger team will
not be sacrificed to form an older team. Youth players will not be
permitted to play up more than one age group. Special
consideration will be given when forming High School level
teams.
Spring teams will be formed following the same criteria. Players
returning for Spring Travel soccer will automatically be placed on
their team after the Spring registration fees are received. Spring
Travel registration will open in November and close on December
31st. Fall Travel Players not paid and registered by February 1st
will be released from their team’s roster.
After the teams are formed, a Head Coach may request that the
team play up one year. Upon board approval, the team will play-up
one year and may then recruit L-S District players in the older age
group that are not already rostered to an LSYS Travel Team, to
play.
Example (from paragraph 2):
For the Fall 2011 – Spring 2012 seasons, J.J. Jackson was age
appropriate for U10. For the Fall 2012 – Spring 2013 seasons, J.J.
Jackson is age appropriate for U11.
At the spring 2011 try-outs, JJ tried-out for the U10 Boys travel
team. Unfortunately, an insufficient number of U10 boys registered
and the U10 boys travel team was not formed. However, because
one position was available on the U11 Boys travel team and JJ had
the highest score at the U10 try-outs, he was asked to join the U11
team. JJ agreed and played Fall 2011 and Spring 2012 on the U11
Boys travel team.
For the Fall 2012 – Spring 2013 try-outs, JJ must try-out with his
age appropriate group, now U11s, and he is permitted to try-out
with his current U11 team at the U12 try-outs.
If a sufficient number of players register for U11 and JJ did not
placed in the top 8 players for an 8 v 8 team (top 11 players for 11
v 11), and he is not selected by the coach, JJ will play U11 for Fall
2011 – Spring 2012 unless the parents request in writing that he
play up, the U12 Head Coach agrees and the board approves the
placement.
However, if he placed in the top 8 (or 11 for 11v11), as above, he
would have the choice to play as a primary player for the U11s or
for the U12s.
TYPICAL QUESTIONS ABOUT LSYS TRAVEL SOCCER
Does it involve a lot of travel as its name indicates?
Not really. The teams usually play in the LANCO League
which in many cases are the same clubs that participate in the
intramural league. The difference sometimes is that the
Travel teams do attend more tournaments which can equate
to more travel at times on weekends. More info about
tournaments below.
Is the competition level a lot higher then intramural soccer and
will my child fit in?
Yes, the competition within the team and the teams they play
against will have a higher challenge in regard to the level of
skill and proficiency both individually and as a team. It is the
coaches job to properly prepare his/her players for that level
of competition. Like all sports at all levels, sometimes the
competition will be higher and sometimes lower than your
own team. The tryouts are designed to select the players who
the evaluators believe can play at a Travel level.
What is the over time commitment?
It is close to the intramural level but it is higher.
1. Training is typically twice a week for 1.5 to 2 hours per
session,
2. League games are once a week on the weekends,
3. There are two seasons, spring and fall and each are about
10 to 12 weeks long,
4. While up to each team, most teams will play one or two
tournament per season.
Do we need to commit to both the spring and fall season?
In general, yes, you need to commit to both spring and fall
seasons. However, usually at the younger age levels the nondominant spring season there can be latitude on the coaches
part to allow limited participation. For example the coach
may only ask that the player makes one practice a week in
the spring and may reduce the number of tournaments. Best
thing here is to ask the coach at the tryouts when he meets
with the parents and before you make your commitment to
the team is asked to play.
IF you have any other questions, please ask so you are
informed!
