The early years class is growing and we are delighted to welcome Tyler who joined us in January bringing our total to four. This term they have been very busy learning about different types of transport and also finding out what happens when they mix two colours together. The topic at the moment is ‘Chinese New Year’ and it is the year of the monkey. As the weather improves staff and pupils are looking forward to getting outside and developing their play area. CHOIR This year we are entering a whole school choir into the Music Festival and have engaged Mrs Diane Philips to tutor our pupils. Mrs Philips works as a music teacher between classes on the mainland and the island. We are delighted to have her expertise and enthusiasm at Kilmory. The children will be singing Mairi’s Wedding and Puss in Boots. OUTDOOR PLAY Our play area is finally completed and was officially opened by Lies and Roisin (as they played a huge part in the removal of the willow dome) on Wednesday 27 th January. Unfortunately, the pupils will have to wait until the grass dries up a bit before they can utilise it properly. The matting is great but is just there to soften any falls. Currently when pupils land on the matting, water and mud shoots through onto their clothing – as no doubt you are all well aware of! We are all looking forward to drier days so that the children can make good use of the new apparatus. PARENTS EVENING /UNIFORM SWAP SHOP Again you will have an opportunity to purchase any items of nearly new uniform that we have on display at the Parents’ Evening in March. We continue to have a very large selection of all types of school wear. At £1 per item buying extra school uniform could not be easier and cheaper. The annual bulk order for new uniform is not placed until May. *Looking for 2nd hand uniform at any time just pop into the school office. RAG BAG The collection from the bin during December raised £144 for school and hall funds. May I remind you that Rag Bag now only accept items of clothing in good condition. SWIMMING AND PARENT COUNCIL Swimming tuition resumed on Monday 1st February for the P4-7 pupils. The Parent Council are currently in the process of applying for grant funding towards the lessons which cost nearly £1000. This amount includes travel, tuition and pool hire. One of the stipulations of receiving grant money is that you have to raise some funds yourself which the parent council were able to do at the Christmas Panto with the raffle making £217. FILM CLUB Mrs Currie’s after school film club for P4-7 pupils will continue until Thursday 10th March. The film club has been a great success and money raised from fees covers the licence and snacks for the children. We are very lucky as members of the film club to have access to a variety of free DVD’s. MARY’S MEALS Thank you to everyone that sent in that extra pot of change for Mary’s Meals at the end of last year. We were able to send a cheque for £292.70 which was doubled by the UK Gift Aid from the government. May I remind you that this is an ongoing collection with Kilmory Primary, so keep sending in those pots with your spare change. We started our collection in 2008 and to this date we have sent a total of £2288.60 to Mary’s Meals. MUSIC FESTIVAL -24th, 25th,26th February This year we have entered three classes. Class 1 - P1-7 choir Class 70a – Country Dancing P1-3 Class 70c – Country Dancing P4-7 Hopefully as many parents as possible will be able to come along and support their child and the school. The times and dates of these classes will be sent out to you as soon as we receive the programme. Well done to all the pupils who have entered the individual classes for verse speaking. BASKETBALL Our P5-7 pupils around the island are very lucky to have been involved in the Jump2it Roadshow with coaching from professional basketball players. The coach will now come to the island for 3 weeks in a row delivering 2 hour block sessions to all P5-7 pupils. Kilmory pupils will travel to Whiting Bay Primary for their coaching. After completion of training P6-7 pupils may have the chance to be part of an island team to take part in a tournament on the mainland. MEETING WITH N.A. REGARDING PLANS FOR ARRAN SCHOOLS A rescheduled meeting will take place in AHS at 7.3opm on Monday 8 th February with Parent council Chairs. This will keep all parents updated on progress. ARRAN SCHOOLS COLLEGIATE This year, primary teachers meet monthly to discuss and develop various issues requiring training or updating. ARRAN EARLY YEARS PRACTITIONERS COLLEGIATE -This is a more recently formed group whereby all island staff are able to get together to plan and develop good practice.
