I’ve heard the arguments; “We do not want to put a sign next to the shoes saying that they are for diabetic
patients, this may discourage non diabetics from buying the shoes.” From what I have been told, the majority
of customers who buy these types of shoes indeed have diabetes. Do the math. How many customers do
you guess go into a drug store looking for a pair of comfortable shoes that sell for around $200.00 compared
to the number of patients with diabetes who enter a pharmacy looking for shoes to lessen the possibility of an
infection or ulcerated foot? For those who are still not convinced, how about we meet half way? Below are

Sign: Did you know that Medicare may pay up to 80% of the cost of diabetic approved shoes for
qualifying customers?
Cross merchandise a shoe sample with a sign near your strips and meter display.
Diabetic shoes should be displayed within sight of the pharmacy’s waiting area.
Have a private area that includes a chair with arms for customers who want to discuss shoe choices.

November is American Diabetes Month. For the month of November place a diabetic shoe with a sign
on your pharmacy counter and front counter.
In the month of November give a pair of diabetic socks to each of your customers with diabetes.
In December create an end-cap of diabetic slippers. These are great specialized gifts and are a cash sale.
