Our Topics
During the first half term we will be looking
at the local environment for our new topic
‘Where do I live?’ Our second topic is
‘Famous People’, focusing on Julia
Donaldson and Quentin Blake.
English
Reading
One of our biggest priorities in key stage
one is reading, we therefore ask you to
continue to support your child with reading
at home. Extra reading at home will
accelerate the progress of your child.
Extra reading help in school will be given to
those children who require additional
support.
As we will be carrying out an author study
of Julia Donaldson, we will read many of her
books and make comparisons. Regular
guided reading sessions enable your child’s
reading to be challenged and extended in a
supported environment.
Writing
Our writing work during the first half term
will focus on poetry, instructions and
explanation texts, and we will take
inspiration from our study of the local
environment and plants. In the second half
term we will focus on Julia Donaldson’s
books. Children will be encouraged to think
like a writer when we read the stories and
‘magpie’ ideas from them to include in their
own writing. We will continue with teaching
the conventions of simple grammar and
punctuation, including the use of capital
letters, full stops, question marks and
exclamation marks.
Spellings and handwriting
We will be continuing our work with phonics
and spellings. Your child has been carefully
assessed and they are taught phonics
regularly in small groups. This enables us to
teach phonics and spelling patterns and rules
as appropriate to their level.
Regular
handwriting lessons will be given.
Speaking and Listening
Speaking and listening is an integral part of
our literacy teaching and learning.
In
everyday lessons a variety of opportunities for
speaking and listening are planned for. They
will be encouraged to report back findings
and explain ideas and give reasons. Children
will take part in sharing collective worship and
simple drama activities.
Mathematics
In year 1 the children will be working on place
value of numbers, using the 4 operations,
money, weight and volume and time. In year
2 we will also introduce simple statistics. As
well as teaching money, measurement,
problem solving and developing a simple
understanding of position and directions.
Science
Our Science topics for the first half of the
term in Year 1 will be basic plants and plant
parts. In Year 2 one of our focuses will be on
growing plants. After half term Year 1 will be
learning to describe properties of
materials and compare and classify
materials, as well as developing their
investigation skills. Year 2 will learn about
healthy eating and things that are living
and non-living.
PSHCE
The children will take part in activities and
discussions. There will be children in each
class in the School Council, Worship Club
and Eco Action Team. They will report
back to their classes on matters discussed.
The children will also take part in
mindfulness activities and the daily mile.
Computing
In Year 1 the focus for the summer term is
‘Discovering Programming’ and will be
investigating programming through using
Beebots. In Year 2 the focus is ‘Talking
and Sharing’. We will continue to talk to
the children about internet safety.
Art and Design and Technology
In design technology we will be focusing
on a healthy diet and using inspiration
from the outside environment to create a
clay tile.
During the second half term we will take
our inspiration from the work of Quentin
Blake and look at the skill of illustrating.
Music
In year 1 our focus will be the quality of
sounds produced when using our voices,
as well as recognising and comparing the
different sounds that musical instruments
make. In year 2, we will be focusing on
rhythm, pulse and pitch through singing
and playing percussion instruments.
P.E. and Equipment
PE kit is required every day.
Children will need red shorts, a
white T-shirt and trainers (with track suit
when the weather is cold.) Please note
that no child will be permitted to
participate in PE sessions if they are
wearing earrings. Earrings should be
removed before the start of school on PE
days. Long hair should be tied back.
Our main focus this term will be multi-skills,
cricket, tennis and athletics.
RE
Our focus for the whole term for Year 1 is
on Holy Books and Stories. We will look at
special books in different faiths and read
stories that show care and concern. In year
2 the children will learn about religious
leaders.
Hola!
Your child will continue to
learn some simple words and
phrases in Spanish.
Home Learning
The main focus for home learning in Key
Stage One will continue to be reading.
Please hear your child read at least five
times a week. We will check your child’s
reading record on a Monday so please don’t
forget to sign the record book, an initial will
do! In addition, your child may have a word
list. Please practise these regularly at
home.
Year 2 children only
Each child in Year 2 will have either an
English, Maths or topic related task every
week. Homework will be given out on
Wednesdays and collected in on Mondays.
Parents Forum
It is an informal meeting with tea & biscuits. It
is your opportunity to ask questions, make
suggestions and talk with Mrs Woods & Mrs
Rogers. Pre school children are welcome to
the daytime meetings. Please check the
school calendar for dates.
Communication
Staff are usually available to talk to you
before or after school about any concerns.
You may also use the reading record book to
communicate with us about issues of any
nature. Working parents are always welcome
to phone the school. Please collect your child
from the class teacher, for your child’s safety.
Please remember to let the school know if
anyone different will be collecting your child.
