Practice Round To better understand what the game is about, players should work together as a group to try solving one Task card. Place the box between all players in such a way that approximately half of all players are located on each side of the box. Hint: Placing the box lid under the box bottom will raise the play area, giving every player a better view of their side. Then, insert a light blue Task card into the card slot of the game board. Only the top section must be visible. Set aside the red piece as it is not used with light blue Task cards. With the remaining 10 pieces, the players must reproduce the construction depicted on the card. Fast paced building with ever-changing teams for 3 to 6 players, 13 years and up Game overview Compete in ever-changing teams of two as you and your current teammate try to recreate the construction depicted on a card. However, it is not as simple as it sounds: both you and your partner have a different view of the construction that you must build together. If your team completes the task with both sides of the construction matching the view on the card perfectly, and also using every piece at your disposal, you will be awarded points. The faster you are, the more points your team will get! Components Game box with board The following building rules must be observed: o The Task card shows how the game pieces must look after completing the construction. The players’ structure must match the card exactly. Note that both sides of the card show a different view of the same construction. o The partners are allowed to communicate. However, they are not allowed to look at the other side of the card. o The pieces may not be placed outside the 4x4 grid on the game board. o The pieces may be placed atop one another, side by side, and in front of each other. o The pieces do not have to be exactly on the same line. If need be, some pieces may be placed “further back.” o Gaps are not allowed under placed pieces (as shown here with the red arrow). o Every single piece must be used. Hint: Sometimes, a piece is not seen from either side. In these cases, the piece must be “hidden” inside the construction. o Pieces may be moved, removed, and reintroduced in any order. o As soon as both sides indicate that they are finished, building ends, and both sides of the structure are verified to ensure that they perfectly match their respective side of the Task card. o The Task card is solved when both sides of the construction perfectly match the pictures on the Task card (as shown below). 11 wooden pieces Electronic timer 30 small Partner tokens 6 large (5 in each color) Player tiles 100 point-chips (25 x 1, 25 x 2, 25 x 5, 25 x 20) 64 Task cards in two levels of difficulty (each with 2 tasks) Game setup o Before your first game, carefully remove the cardboard pieces from the frame. o Each player chooses a color and takes the large Player tile along with the small Partner tokens in their color. Then, each player distributes one of their Partner tokens to each other player. For example, in a five-player game, each player will have 4 Partner tokens. Note: In a three-player game, give each other player 2 Partner tokens of your color. o Each player turns face-down the Partner tokens they have received, shuffles them, and puts them next to their Player tile. When playing with fewer than six players, return to the box all unused Player tiles and Partner tokens. They will not be used for this game. o Place the box bottom in the middle of the table. Insert the board in such a way that the lower compartments are accessible via the holes in the game board. o Sort the point-chips by value and place them in the appropriate compartments. o Place the timer in the round hole. (For more information on using the timer, see page 2.) o Sort the Task cards according to their background color (light and dark blue). Shuffle each pile and place them next to the playing surface, together with the 11 wooden pieces. The Game Begins! Now that every one knows the building rules, there are two more things you should know before playing the game... 1. Each round, two players will build together, each working on one side of the Task card. 2. The game is timed. Playing the game Before starting the game, decide together whether you wish to play with the light blue Task cards (normal difficulty) or the dark blue cards (higher difficulty). Hint: For your first game, you should play with the light blue cards. Once you understand the game well enough, start using the dark blue cards. When playing with the light blue Task cards, return the red piece to the box as it will not be used. You only use all 11 pieces when playing with the dark blue cards. 1 Where does the name “La Boca” come from? The oldest player begins the game by revealing one of her face-down Partner tokens; it determines her partner for this turn. Place the box in such a way that each involved player will only be able to see one side of the Task card. “La Boca” is a barrio (neighborhood) in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The game pieces represent the colorful houses that dominate the cityscape. Starting the round: The player who revealed the Partner token takes the topmost Task card, slides it into the card slot, presses the “Start” button on the timer, and says “Go!”. The designers, Inka and Markus Brand, live together in Gummersbach with their children, Luke and Emely. Both designers have always liked playing games. To this day, many of their Children and Family games have been published. Completing the task: The team immediately starts working on reproducing the construction depicted on their respective side of the card. When both players are finished, one of them presses the “Stop” button on the timer. It is important that both players say they are done with the task before pressing the “Stop” button. This table is also illustrated on the game board. Since both players worked as a team to complete the task, they each get the same number of points. Each player takes the point-chips they earned. Players may make change with pointchips at any time during the game. Note: If a team takes more than 2 minutes to complete a task, they do not score any points. However, they may still attempt to complete the task. At that point, the other players are also welcome to help. Questions, comments, suggestions? Time Points Time The Timer Points 0:01 – 0:15 10 0:51 – 1:00 4 0:16 – 0:20 9 1:01 – 1:20 3 0:21 – 0:25 8 1:21 – 1:40 2 0:26 – 0:30 7 1:41 – 2:00 1 0:31 – 0:40 6 Over 2 minutes 0 0:41 – 0:50 5 Error 0 • What counts as an error? o At least one side was not properly reproduced. o Not all pieces were used. o There is at least one gap in the construction (i.e. “hanging” piece). • • • Clean Up: All pieces are removed from the board and placed next to the playing surface. The played Task card is placed under the deck. The next player in clockwise order becomes the first player and he resets the timer to 00:00 (by pressing the “Minute” and “Second” buttons at the same time). He then reveals one of his Partner tokens and play continues this way until no one has any face-down Partner tokens in front of them. • • • You must press the “Minute” and “Second” buttons at the same time to set the timer to 00:00. • The “Start/Stop” button starts and stops the timer. • When a team is done, a player from the team must press the “Start/Stop” button to stop the timer. The time it took the team to complete the task may now be read. • DO NOT reset the timer before awarding the team their points. The timer requires a 1.5-volt button cell (LR44). One is already included in the electronic timer. Before playing for the first time, you will need to remove the plastic tab for the timer to work. Used batteries must be removed from the device. Unscrew the cover and remove the battery. Respect the polarity when replacing the battery. The negative pole must point down. Do not forget to screw the cover back on to the timer. Avoid short-circuiting the battery. Dispose of used batteries according to environmental regulations. Game end The game ends when all Partner tokens are face-up. At that point, everyone will have played two times with each other player. In a three-player game, since players have two Partner tokens of each other player, everyone will have played four times with everyone else. In case of a tie, there are multiple winners. 2
