CATAGORIES
Candidates with following qualification shall be eligible for admission to the Full- Time and PartTime Ph. D. Programme of the Institute.
The applicant for admission to the Ph.D. programme shall be classified under any one of the following
two categories.
1. Full-time Research student/Candidate
a) Research student/Candidate getting Institute MHRD assistantship.
b) Research student/Candidate including foreign nationals getting financial support from Govt. / Semi
Govt. agencies (QIP, CSIR, UGC, NET, DAE, DST, DBT, NBHM, ICCR, ICAR, ICMR, GPAT,
NDF, INSPIRE etc.)
c) Research student/candidate regularly working full time in an R & D project at NIT Patna.
2. Part-time Research Student/ Candidate:

Candidate working regularly full-time in an R&D project in the Institute. The project must
have tenure of at least next 1½ years at the time of admission.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR SELECTION FOR THE FULL-TIME AND PARTTIME CANDIDATES
A. For Full-Time candidate:
i.
M. Tech./ M.E./ M. Arch or equivalent degree with at least 6.5 CGPA in aggregate from
IITs/NITs/ GFTIs and qualified national level graduate entrance test, such as, GATE/UGCNET/CSIR-NET or equivalent or holding a national level fellowship.
ii.
M. Tech./ M.E./ M. Arch or equivalent degree with at least 7.5 CGPA (or 70 percent marks) in
aggregate from other recognized technical institute or university and having qualified national
and qualified national level graduate entrance test, such as, GATE/UGC-NET/CSIR-NET or
equivalent or holding a national level fellowship.
iii.
B.Tech. / B.Arch. degree or equivalent in respective discipline with at least 9.0 CGPA (or 85
percent marks) in aggregate from a recognized technical institute or university. However, a
valid GATE score/NET qualification or equivalent or holding a national level fellowship is
mandatory for such candidates.
iv.
B.Tech. / B.Arch. degree or equivalent in respective discipline from the IITs with 8.5 CGPA
and from NITs with 9.0 CGPA may be exempted from the requirement of valid GATE/NET
qualification.
v.
M. Sc./ M. Com./ MBA/ PGDBM/ PGDM/ MA/MCA or equivalent degree in relevant
discipline with at least 6.0 CGPA or 55 percent marks or equivalent in aggregate from a

recognized institute or university. A valid GATE score/NET qualification is mandatory for
such candidates.
vi.
M. Sc./ M. Com./ MBA/ PGDBM/ PGDM/ MA/MCA or equivalent degree from CFTIs in
relevant discipline with at least 7.5 CGPA(or 70 percent marks) in aggregate shall be
exempted from the requirement of valid GATE/NET qualification. However, such candidates
must be qualified GATE/JAM/JEST/CAT or equivalent national eligibility test while taking
admission in the master degree in the relevant discipline.
vii.
The minimum CGPA/marks shall be relaxed by 0.5 CGPA (or 5 percent) in case of candidates
belonging to the SC/ST/PH categories in all cases.
B. For Part-Time candidate:
i.
M. Tech./ M.E./ M. Arch or equivalent degree in relevant discipline with at least 6.5
CGPA(or 60 percent marks) in aggregate from a recognized technical institute or
university. The condition for national level graduate admission test is not applicable to
sponsored part-time research candidates.
ii.
B.Tech. / B.Arch. degree or equivalent in respective discipline with at least 7.0 CGPA (or
65 percent marks) in aggregate from a recognized technical institute or university.
iii.
M. Sc./ M. Com./ MBA/ PGDBM/ PGDM/ MA or equivalent degree in relevant discipline
with at least 6.0 CGPA (or 55 percent marks) in aggregate from a recognized institute or
university.
Admission Procedure and Other Details:
The candidates not having a valid GATE/NET have to appear for a written test examination. The
candidates who secure 30 percent marks in the written test examination will be eligible for the
Interview. The candidate having the valid GATE/NET score may be exempted from the written test
examination. The interview will be of 100 marks and a candidate has to secure at least 50 marks in the
interview to be considered for the admission to the PhD Programme, provided the vacancy is
available. The ranking will be decided only based on the interview marks.
Candidates’ name fulfilling minimum eligible criterion for admission to the respective department and
program will be displayed on the Institute website as per admission schedule.
The written examination/ Interview will be conducted by the Examination section and Admission
Committee of respective department in association with experts from respective departments.
Admission shall be based on merit prepared after written test and interview, and subject to verification
of documents, original certificates.
Important Information for Candidates
i)
Any candidate may apply for any one department, even if eligibility from multiple
disciplines/ specialisations at Bachelor’s/ Master’s level may be considered for admission to
any program.

ii)
A candidate is required to appear for Admission Test and Interview for only that
department for which he/she has applied.
iii)
Application number allotted to each candidate will be their Roll No. for any future
reference.
iv)
No separate acknowledgment or call letter will be sent by the institute for attending the
Admission Test/ Interview/ Counselling.
v)
No separate Admit Card will be issued for the admission Test, hence the candidates are
directed to bring any standard Photo I-Card (in Original) with a photocopy thereof,
such as, PAN Card, EPIC, Driving License, I-card issued by their Employer, or any
Govt./ Public Sector Organization etc.
vi)
Candidates reporting without any standard I-Card (in original) as stated above shall
not be allowed to appear at admission Test.
vii)
Candidates must report in the Institute at least 30 minutes before start of admission
Test else they will not be allowed to appear at the written Test.
viii)
Candidates are advised to visit the Institute website www.nitp.ac.in for regular updates.
ix)
The name of the short listed candidates eligible for the Interview shall also be displayed on
the Institute website.
x)
A candidate shall be considered for written examination/ Interview even if the result of the
qualifying examination is awaited. If selected, such candidates will be allowed to join the
programme provisionally, only if he/ she submits a certificate on the date of written
examination/ Interview from the Principal/ Registrar of his/ her College/ Institute stating
that the candidate has completed all course requirements for obtaining the qualifying
degree on the date of the issue of the certificate.
However, mark sheet of qualifying examination with requisite marks or equivalent CGPA
must be submitted to the office of Dean (Academics) on or before the admission, failing
which will lead to cancellation of admission.

Admission Written Test questions:
a. Admission Written Test will be multiple choice objective types. There will be 100
questions having 3 marks each. The Objective question shall have negative
marking. For each right answer 3 marks will be awarded and for each wrong
answer 1 will be deducted.
b. Syllabus for the admission Test shall be as per GATE/ NET 2015 examination for
respective department/ specialization.
c. Written Admission Test shall have Objective Type multiple choice/ option type
questions only. The question paper shall have 25% questions to test candidate’s
general analytic ability and aptitude to undertake research and 75% shall be from
relevant discipline.
d. Question paper for admission test for Ph. D program shall be different for each
department.
xii)
Interview: Candidates who appear at Admission Test and are shortlisted for the interview
are required to appear at viva-voce. Further, candidates are required to produce original
documents for verification of their academic records and credentials before the interview. If
one does not fulfil minimum eligibility criteria for the program, he/she shall not be permitted
to appear at the interview and his/her candidature shall stand cancelled.
xiii)
Merit list: The merit list of the selected candidates shall be notified on Institute website.
xiv)
The selected candidates are required to report for admission on due date and time. No
separate selection letter will be sent to any candidate.

xv)
No extension of time for admission reporting shall be allowed. If any candidate does not
report for admission by due date, then his/ her selection shall stand cancelled and the seat
will be given to the next candidate from the waiting list.
xvi)
In case of sponsored candidate, an advance copy of the application may be sent by the
candidate and NO OBJECTION CERTIFICATE must be submitted by the candidate at the
time of test/interview. Without NOC the candidature will not be considered.
Scholarship & Financial Assistance for Ph. D. Program:
Institute Research Fellowship will be available to the eligible students as per MHRD, GOI norms. The
period and amount of research fellowship shall be as per notification of the competent authority from
time to time.
Note: The scholarships from any other agency/ organization are governed by rules and regulation of
funding agency only, and students shall be governed by their rules only.
Documents required to be submitted along with the application form
The candidates are required to submit following documents along with the application form:
a. Photocopy of High School Certificate
b. Photocopies of all Mark sheets
c. Certificate of sponsorship in the prescribed format (if applicable).
d. A photocopy of GATE/NET or equivalent score card
e. A photocopy of the certificate of Caste (if applicable).
Documents required for verification during the interview and admission

h. Character Certificate issued by the Head of the Institution last attended/ from
employer.

j. No. Objection certificate from parent employer (if applicable).
The candidates are required to bring following documents at the time of admission:
a. Passport size Photographs (4 Nos.).
b. Two set of Self attested copies of all the documents listed above.
c. Admission letter if any issued by the Institute/ verified document/ Admit Card
used for Admission Test.
Note: The Institute reserves the right to refuse admission to any candidate without assigning any
reason. All disputes are subject to Patna High Court only.

Application Procedure
1. Application form form can be downloaded in the NIT Patna website http://www.nitp.ac.in
2. Please fill-in the form by typesetting. Handwritten form is discouraged.
3. The signed application form along with recent photograph and self-attested relevant
certificates must be sent to the following address on or before the last date of submission.
The address and last date of submission are mentioned below.
4. Application fee of Rs. 1000/- for General/ OBC/ Sponsored category and Rs. 500/- for
SC/ ST/ PH in the form of DD drawn in favour of National Institute of Technology Patna
Payable at Patna, must accompany with the application submitted as stated above, else
application shall be rejected.
5. Applicants from SC/ ST/ PH category must enclose Certificate issued by competent
authority to claim relaxation in application Fee.
