BACKGROUND
The NZVA has an ambitious and exciting strategic vision for the veterinary profession to
positively influence the collective wellbeing of animals, people, and the environment. In
doing so, the profession can help make a better New Zealand and potentially a better world.
The strength of the profession lies in our members - highly skilled veterinarians who work in
a range of industries throughout the nation and bring knowledge and insight wherever we
share our lives and environment with animals, for example, agriculture and farming, food and
fibre production, companion animals and horses, and wildlife.
The NZVA’s role is to deliver vision and voice for the profession, and value for all our
members – through outstanding services and support, inspirational leadership and
management, enduring collegiality and community, and by effectively lifting and
communicating the value of the profession.
OBJECTIVES
The objectives of the Head of Commercial Development




Assist the Chief Executive in lifting the value of the profession by leading the
association through the commercial landscape in order to enable and maintain a
consistent growth strategy
Work closely with the senior leadership team to ensure the financial sustainability of
the NZVA through achieving its strategic objectives.
Provide oversight and strategic direction of the Association’s commercial
engagements, financial management and ICT systems.
Providing timely and relevant financial and commercial advice and guidance to the
relevant boards, board committees (particularly Audit and Risk Committees), CEO
and senior leadership team (including branches).
Team: Currently 4 Direct Reports
Budget: Annual Revenue $4.6m

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
Senior Leadership Team Responsibilities

The Head of Commercial Development is a member of the senior leadership team and is
responsible for balancing a “whole of organisation” approach to the achievement of
NZVA’s strategic direction with the leadership of their own team
o
Work closely with other members of the senior leadership team to develop and
implement the strategic direction of NZVA and support organisation-wide
initiatives, projects and organisation development activities
o
Make collaborative decisions on resource allocation across NZVA as a whole,
keeping a focus on whole of organisation priorities and outcomes
o
Provide information on the operating environment, resources and capabilities in
their team to inform strategy development and decision-making for NZVA as a
whole
o
Support the new structure and model of management, reinforcing desired culture
shifts in their team, and promoting continuous improvement.
o
Influence their team to develop skills, adopt new ideas and change practices
Strategy and planning

Work with the CEO, Boards, Board Committees, and Senior Leadership team on all
operational and strategic issues as they relate to commercial development, finance or
Information and Communication Technology Services
o Provide strategic recommendations based on budget and comparative financial
analysis and projections, cost identification and allocation, and revenue/expense
analysis
o Implement capital expenditure programmes in line with strategic objectives; monitor
and report
o Monitor, report and advise on changes required in the broader Not-for-Profit
environment that ensures the Association and related entities remain current and
compliant
Commercial Development

Working with the senior leadership team (including CEO), lead the development of an
NZVA commercial strategy that ensures consistent and sustainable growth

Prospect for potential new revenue streams to support strategic objectives of the NZVA

Ensure investor and/or partner retention through internal and external briefings and
debriefings relating to products and services previously agreed upon

Monitor, report and advise on commercial opportunities through regular environmental
scanning, both formal and informal

Maintain networks within veterinary and external professions relevant to the strategic
objectives of the NZVA

Financial and Operational Management

Lead the development of departmental / entity, branch and national office budgets
(including capital expenditure), and the coordination of a whole of organisation budget
o
Oversee the implementation of budgets; monitor progress and present operational
metrics both internally and externally
o
Lead the finance team to ensure that robust financial recording systems are
maintained and in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles
o
Monitor and report on the use of all funds including all investments; present options
for improvements
o
Oversee the preparation and approval of all financial reporting materials and metrics
for funding the organisation; prepare and communicate monthly and annual financial
statements.
o
Manage cash flow and forecasting; direct all financial, project-based, and
departmental accounting.
o
Coordinate and actively participate in all audit and risk management activities
o
Evaluate and contribute to business case and project plans as required to ensure
financial rigour, financial modelling and scenario analysis
o
Develop and improve financial and related measures, key performance indicators,
policies and procedures to ensure consistency and improvement in organisation wide
deliverables
Payroll

Negotiate and manage payroll contract; seeking value for money for the organisation in
conjunction with the Head of Business and Support Services

Support the Head of Business and Support Services to develop and report on payroll
metrics that allow for accurate analysis and interrogation, and support strategic and
operational deliverables
Information Communication Technologies

Lead the development, maintenance and implementation, with inputs from the senior
leadership team as well as IT staff, an annual roadmap aligned to the NZVA Strategy
and which includes hardware and software requirements.

Manage and enhance the relationships with third party providers to ensure services are
timely and responsive and provide good value

Ensure relevant policies are reviewed and updated on a regular cycle.

Implement, monitor and report variances deliverables to mitigate operational risk and
enhance product and service delivery and customer / member satisfaction across all
entities

Identifying and implementing opportunities for business led technological innovation and
development

EDUCATION AND EXEPERIENCE
This position is tailored for an experienced professional with:

A minimum of 3-5 years in a senior / middle management commercial development role

A minimum of three years’ experience relating to a financial accounting environment
including budgeting, audit, risk management, control and reporting

Experience working for professional Association or similar organisation is an advantage

Chartered Accountant or degree or equivalent in a related field(s)
DEMONSTRATED SKILLS

Commercial and business acumen relating to the attraction and retention of new and/or
existing investors and partnerships

Outstanding relationship / stakeholder management skills and ability to navigate
complexity in order to manage multiple agendas.

Clear understanding of risk management, quality improvement and assurance

Well-developed interpersonal skills (both written and oral)

Strong relationship management skills (Corporates, Boards, Associations, Committees,
Voluntary Groups, wider stakeholders)

High standard of business acumen with proven background in delivering relevant
strategies to quantifiable/measurable outcomes




