QUESTIONS
1. Immediately after A4 has received the ball for a throw-in, A5 enters the restricted area. A4 is
still in possession of the ball. Has team A violated the throw-in provision rule?
2. A5 has had possession of the ball in the back court for 6 seconds when B7 exerts pressure
preventing him from going into the front court. A5 then throws the ball toward A6 who is in
the front court. After the ball bounces off the floor in the front court and with the shot clock
now showing 16 seconds it hits an official. It is retrieved by A6 with the shot clock showing
14 seconds. Should the official allow play to continue?
3. As A7, with possession of the ball, is dribbling toward the division line, his left front castor
touches the front court. With only his left wheels crossing the line he returns to the back
court. The official signals a back over violation. Was the official correct?
4. A9, while in possession of the ball, stops her chair straddling the division line. She passes to
A5 who is in the back court. The official allows the play to continue and continues his 8
second count. Is this a correct decision?
5. Play is stopped after A3’s wheelchair breaks an axle. Team A’s equipment manager is having
difficulties making an immediate repair. Must a substitution be made for A3 after fifty
seconds?
6. A4 has control of the ball in the front court. B3 knocks the ball away from A4 and it bounces
on the division line. A5 who is fully in the front court reaches the ball and begins dribbling it
on the division line. The official rules this to be a back over violation. Was the official
correct?
7. At the request of the coach of the opposing team or during a directed chair check, the
referee discovers A4 wants to play with a “therapeutic cushion”, which has cut out portions
to conform to his legs and buttocks. As long as the height from the floor to the top of the
1
cushion when placed on the seat platform does not exceed the legal height for the player’s
class and the dimensions of the cushion are the same as the seat of the wheelchair, is A4’s
chair considered to be legal?
8. Near the end of an 8 second period, A4 who is in his back court throws the ball so that it hits
B4’s chair which is in Team A’s front court. The ball bounces back to the Team A back court
where it is controlled by A5. Shall Team A be granted a new 8 second count?
9. Must a player who stops his wheelchair in a legal guarding position in the path of a moving
opponent with the ball give the opponent time and distance to stop or change direction?
10. A backcourt throw-in by A3 is deflected by B3. The ball bounces freely in the backcourt for 2
seconds before it is controlled by A4. Is the official correct in starting an 8-second count
when A4 takes control of the ball in the backcourt?
11. A4, with both hands removed from the rear wheels, contacts a defender and raises both
rear wheels off the floor in attempting a try for a goal. Shall a foul be assessed to A4 for
lifting?
12. After the referee tosses the ball for the tap-off, the commissioner notices that Team A has
more than 14 points on its starting line-up. The commissioner advises the referee and Team
A is required to make substitutions as necessary to correct its line up to meet the 14-point
limit rule; however, as the game has already started no technical foul will be charged to
Team A’s coach. Is this correct?
13. When a player receives a second technical foul and is disqualified for the remainder of the
game the other team is awarded two free throws plus possession of the ball for a throw-in
at the centre line extended opposite the scorer’s table. Is this correct?
14. While in the act of shooting, there is physical contact between shooter A1 and defender B1.
The ball enters the basket. The lead official calls an offensive foul against A1 and the trail
official calls a defensive foul against B1. A double foul has occurred but the basket shall
count. The game shall be resumed with a team B throw-in at any point of the end line.
15. A4 retrieves a ball from the floor by leaning forward and raising his buttock’s so that both
cheeks are no longer in contact with the seating platform of the wheelchair or the cushion.
The official calls a violation on A4. Is the official correct?
16. A4 has passed the ball to A5 from out-of-bounds. Afterwards, B3 prevents A4 from reentering the court by remaining on his spot near the sideline. A4 tries to enter the court by
moving down the side line outside the court and away from his front court. B3 follows A4
parallel to the sideline to prevent him from entering the court. The action of B3 is contrary
to the spirit of the game and, following a warning, could be penalized by a technical foul if
repeated. Is this a true statement?
17. A3 sets a pick on B2 in order to allow A4 to move to the basket but the chairs of A4 and B2
are “hooked”. A4 who has the ball in his hands “jumps” his chair with all four wheels off the
ground to use the screen set by A3. Shall a foul be assessed to A4 for lifting?
2
18. A below-the-knee amputee with a leg secured is viewed the same as a “normal” leg and
shall be classified as if the leg is complete. Since this is viewed to be a considerable
advantage, it must be noted on the player’s classification card and the player must play with
the strapping as indicated. Is this correct?
19. Shall the penalty for an unsportsmanlike foul always be two free throws followed by a
throw-in at the midcourt line opposite the scorer's table?
20. Near the end of the shot clock period A4’s pass is missed by A5 (both players are in their
frontcourt) and the ball rolls into team A’s backcourt. Before B4 gains control of the ball
with a free path to the basket the shot clock signal sounds. Shall the signal be disregarded if
B4 gains immediate and clear control of the ball?
21. During an attempt to block a shot that has left the hand(s) of A4, B4 lifts from his seat. He
succeeds in touching and changing the direction of the ball, which does not enter the
basket. A technical foul is charged against B4 and 1 free throw is awarded to A4 followed by
a throw-in at the centre line extended opposite the scorer’s table. Is this a correct ruling by
the official?
22. A4 remains in the opponent’s restricted area in excess of 3 seconds because his wheelchair
has become interlocked with that of his opponent B4. A4 does not make an attempt to leave
the restricted area. This is legal and no 3 second violation should be called. Yes or No?
23. A5 lifts from his seat in an attempt to secure a rebound. He touches the ball with his fingers
but is unable to secure it. Shall a technical foul be charged against A5?
24. A2 is given a warning for interfering with a throw-in. The warning shall be given to the
player and also be communicated to coach A and shall apply only to this player for the
remainder of the game. Yes or No?
25. In a fast break situation, A1, with the ball drives to the opponent’s basket. No defensive
player is between A1 and the basket. B1 tries to stop the fast break of A1 by contacting the
rear wheel of A1 with his footrest. Shall a technical foul be charged against B1?
26. A4 shoots for a field goal at the end of a shot clock period. The ball is legally blocked by B4
and then the shot clock signal sounds. After the signal B4 fouls A4, normal foul. A shot clock
violation has occurred and B4’s foul shall be disregarded.
27. In an attempt to block A4’s shot from the 3 point area, B2 lifts all four wheels off the floor
while both hands are removed from the rear wheels. Is this a legal action?
28. After A4 (who is in the backcourt) throws a long pass to A1 he loses his balance and falls out
of his chair. All other players are in the front court as A1 (with the ball) attacks the
opponent’s basket. Since A4 cannot get back in his chair to join his teammates shall the
officials stop play immediately?
29. Team B is entitled to a throw-in under the alternating possession rule. The official
erroneously awards the throw-in to Team A. The official discovers his error after the ball
3
becomes alive and stops the play to correct the situation. Is the official correct with this
procedure?
30. With 1:30 left in the game, the ball is in the hands of offensive player A5 for a throw in when
an opponent makes significant contact with A3. The official calls a pushing foul on the
defensive player. Was the official correct?
