4 important Amendments we need to
know!
Bill of Rights
O 10 rights were added to the Constitution to
protect the rights of the people.
O These rights CANNOT be taken away from
the people!
O These rights list actions the government is
NOT allowed to do.
Amendment 1
O Freedom of speech
O Freedom of religion
O Freedom of the press
O Freedom of assembly
O Freedom to petition the government
Freedom of speech
O You have the right to express your opinion
about a subject without being arrested.
O You may even criticize the government, but
you can’t say anything to cause danger or
harm to others.
Freedom of religion
O You can worship as you wish or not at all.
O The government CANNOT choose a religion
for the whole country to follow.
Freedom of press
O The government CANNOT tell people what
they can or cannot print in newspapers or
books.
Freedom of assembly
O You have the right to join and meet with any
group.
O But, you CANNOT commit crimes with that
group!
Freedom to petition the
government
O You may sign and send a petition to the
government if you have a complaint.
Amendment 5
O If you commit a crime, you will NOT be tried
more than once for the same offence.
O You will NOT have to be a witness against
yourself.
Amendment 6
O If you commit a crime, you have the right to
a speedy trial and a trial by jury. A jury is a
group of people who decide the outcome of
the trial.
Amendment 8
O No cruel or unusual punishment is allowed!
