TOP-SEEDED BLOODHOUNDS WIN FIRST TITLE SINCE 2002 The top-seeded John Jay Bloodhounds came out of the loser’s bracket to capture the 2007 CUNYAC Baseball Championship at the College of Staten Island. The Bloodhounds, who opened the tournament with a 2-1 loss to the College of Staten Island, defeated the CCNY Beavers, 13-4 and 10-5, to win their first title since 2002. After forcing a seventh and deciding game with a convincing 13-4 win in game six, the Bloodhounds came out thirty minutes later and turned in a similar dominant performance in the decisive game. “I told these guys the feeling of winning the championship would be like nothing they have ever felt before,” said John Jay head coach Dan Palumbo. “Right now these guys are getting reaping the benefit of all the hard work they put in. These guys really wanted to win this thing especially after falling short last year, and here we are 12 months later the champions of the CUNY.” Bloodhounds’ center fielder Tim Murphy was named the Most Valuable Player of the Tournament after batting .600 (15-for-25) with nine RBI’s and nine runs scored in five contests. “It is a great feeling to know that all of our hard work really paid off,” said Murphy. “The MVP doesn’t mean as much as the championship. I was fortunate enough to have a great tournament and help the team win. “ Trailing 2-1, John Jay scored five unearned runs in the bottom of the third inning to grab a 6-2 lead. The Bloodhounds took advantage of three CCNY errors in the frame. Beaver’s second baseman Alex Flores booted consecutive ground ball chances to open the inning and third baseman Richard Gomez botched another that could have gotten CCNY out of the jam without any damage. However, Gomez’ miscue resulted in a run and opened the door for four more. Johan Abad (2 RBI’s) walked with the bases loaded and Gonzalo Gonzalez (2-for-3, 2 RBI) followed with a two-run single to right center. Richard Santana then singled to left for the final run of the frame. An RBI single by Kenneth Sepulveda and a run-scoring sacrifice fly by Abad in the bottom of the fourth extended the lead to 8-2. The Beavers trimmed the lead to 8-4 as they scored two runs in the top of the sixth on an RBI groundout by Tim Mena and an RBI single by Lucian Maldonado. Gomez (2-for-4) then brought CCNY within 8-5 after he delivered an RBI double in the top of the seventh, but John Jay pitcher/designated hitter John Massoni responded with a two-run single in the bottom of the frame to extend the lead back to 10-5. For the second straight game, CCNY lit up the scoreboard first as they scored two runs in the top of the first inning. Armando Wellington drew a lead-off walk and scored when Brian Padilla (2-for-4, RBI) blooped a single just over the glove of John Jay second baseman James DeCesare. Padilla, who appeared to be caught off second base, then came around to score after Massoni made an errant throw into left field during a run-down play. Massoni went 5.0 innings to record the victory for the Bloodhounds, allowing just one earned run and four hits. CCNY starter Raul Hidalgo suffered the loss, although he only allowed one earned run in four innings. In game six, CCNY jumped out to a 1-0 start in the top of the first inning on a one-out RBI groundout by Gomez. Ruben Zorrilla (2-for-5) set-up the run with a triple over the head of John Jay center fielder Tim Murphy. But John Jay scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning to grab a 3-1 lead and never trailed again. Sepulveda plated Murphy (reached on error) with a line-drive single. Massoni followed with an RBI groundout and Gonzalez was hit by a pitch to bring home another run. John Jay scored another run in the bottom of the second and added three more in the third to build a 7-3 lead and never looked back. Joseph Ayala allowed three earned runs in 6.0 innings to earn the victory for the Bloodhounds. Murphy (4-for-6, three runs) and Sepulveda (4-for-5, 2 RBI’s) each had four hits for the Bloodhounds. Leonel Ortiz took the loss after allowing four earned runs in just 2.0 innings of work. baseball 2007 TOURNAMENT MVP TIM MURPHY CHAMPIONSHIP GAME BOXSCORE CCNY POS AB R H RBI BB SO Wellington LF 2 1 0 0 1 0 Fraser RF 1 0 0 0 0 0 Zorrilla CF 3 1 1 0 2 1 R. The Dolphins will move into the second day of the double-elimination tournament in the winners bracket, taking on the winner of No. 2 Mitchell College vs. No. 3 City College of New York in a game being played later this evening at CSI. CSI got on the board early and made the runs stand the entire way. After John Jay starter Michael Colletta registered the first two outs of the game in order, CSI senior Bob Glennerster singled through the left side. With Glennerster stationed at first base, Ray Valerio stepped up next, and cracked a two-run homerun to left-centerfield, giving CSI the early 2-0 advantage. Little did one know the modest lead would be enough for CSI freshman knuckleballer Daniel Gonzalez, who improved to 5-0 on the season by holding the Bloodhounds to a single run the entire way on 9 hits while fanning a batter. Along the way, Gonzalez worked through a jam in the second inning after yielding two hits with a single runner out. John Jay finally struck in the seventh inning. Led off by a Kenneth Sepulveda triple, the run came home on a following single by John DeCrescenzo in the next at-bat. With nobody out, Gonzalez settled, however, and the frosh induced a trio of lazy fly balls to end the scoring threat for the Bloodhounds. Down to their final three outs, John Jay threatened in the 9th. After registering an out, Sepulveda walked to start the rally. After Decrescenzo flied out, a gapper to right-center by Gonzalo Gonzalez advanced Sepulveda to third. CSI’s Gonzalez pulled through again, getting Bloodhound Richard Santana to fly out to centerfield to end the inning and the game. John Jay left eight total runners on base, making Colletta a hard-luck loser in the game, despite giving up just six hits over nine innings, fanning six. Sepulveda finished 2-for-3 for the Bloodhounds with a walk, while CSI’s Mohammad Hamad registered the only multi-hit game for the Dolphins, finishing 2-for-3. baseball 2007 2007 CUNY TOURNAMENT RECAPS Game 2 • #3 CCNY 13, #2 Mitchell 5 In the second game, CCNY scored four runs in the top of the second inning to break a 2-2 tie off Mitchell starter Salvatore Messina (1.0 innings, 6 earned runs), a CUNYAC Pitcher of the Year candidate. Tim Mena (3-for-4, 3 RBI) produced a run-scoring single and Armando Wellington (walk) and Ruben Zorrilla (hit-by-pitch) each brought in runs. The Beavers scored three more runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a commanding 9-3 lead. Richard Gomez (4-for-5) opened the frame with a homer to left, and Brian Padilla (triple) and Mena (single) also came up with run producing hits.Wilton Salazar recorded the victory for CCNY as he allowed seven hits and four earned runs over 7.0 innings of work. Game 3 • #1 John Jay 15, #2 Mitchell 7 Tim Murphy went 5-for-6 with three runs, seven runs batted in, and was a home run shy of the cycle as the John Jay baseball team defeated Mitchell College 15-7 in the loser’s bracket game of the 2007 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) baseball championship at the College of Staten Island Baseball Complex. The Peqouts have been eliminated from the tournament.“It was a great win for us. Obviously it is what we needed if we want to win this tournament,” said John Jay head coach Dan Palumbo. “Today we played more like John Jay baseball. We hit and we capitalized. Hopefully we can take the momentum into tonight and advance to tomorrow.” Mitchell got the scoring started the same way CSI did against the Bloodhounds one day ago, via the long ball. Mitchell’s Seth Nowakowski belted a homerun to left field, a two run shot, in the top of the first to take a 2-0 advantage. But the lead was erased for good in the bottom of the second as the Bloodhounds put up six runs in the frame and never looked back. Johan Abad scored the Bloodhounds’ first run when he crossed home plate on an RBI single by Richard Santana. Moments later the Bloodhounds took the lead for good on a bases clearing double by Murphy that scored Santana and Gonzalo Gonzalez. Murphy then scored on an RBI single by Henry Chao to make the score 4-2. John Jay earned their fifth run with a double steal as Michael Cafagno stole home as Chao cruised into second. Chao advanced to third on the play after a throwing error by the Peqout catcher, then scored on a triple by James DeCesare. John Jay would go on to score at least one run in each inning except for the seventh, and they out hit Mitchell College 16-10. “I’m feeling pretty good right now,” said Murphy, who was reinserted into the starting lineup yesterday after missing the last 18 games with a hamstring injury. “The hamstring feels OK and I’m glad I was able to produce and help the team move on.” John Dobkowski picked up the win after going 6.2 innings, allowing seven runs (six earned) on eight hits, and striking out three. Jerry Chapman went 1.1 innings for the Peqouts and allowed six runs on six hits and suffered the loss. Daniel Lanoue, Shawn Guiney, Seth Nowakowski, and Matt Chatell had two hits a piece for Mitchell. Cafagno was 3-for-6 for John Jay, while Santana scored four times while going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Game 4 • #3 CCNY 15, #4 Staten Island 7 The CCNY Beavers advanced to Saturday’s championship game with a 15-7 victory over the College of Staten Island Dolphins. The Beavers pounded out 17 hits as all nine starters recorded base knocks.Staten Island led 4-3 after three frames, but CCNY scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead for good at 7-4. Second baseman Alex Flores (2-for-4, 3 runs) delivered a two-run single to highlight the inning. The Dolphins closed to 7-6 with two runs in the top of the sixth inning, but the Beavers answered right back with three runs in the bottom of the frame to establish a 10-6 advantage. CCNY put the game out of reach with four more runs in the bottom of the seventh. Beavers’ third baseman Richard Gomez continued his torrid hitting by going 4-for-5 with 3 RBI’s. Gomez also scored four runs and homered. Center fielder Ruben Zorrilla scored four runs and drove in a pair and catcher Brian Padilla went 3-for-4. CSI’s Bob Glennerster went 4-for-4 with three runs scored and third baseman Ray Valerio was 2-for-3 with 3 RBI’s. Roberto Fernandez recorded the victory for CCNY despite allowing seven runs and 10 hits over 7.0 innings. John Sullivan suffered the loss for the Dolphins, allowing six earned runs and seven hits over 3.0 innings. Game 5 • #1 John Jay 9, #4 Staten Island 7 John Massoni went 2-for-5 with two runs and three runs batted in at the plate, and pitched six innings, allowing three runs on six hits with five strikeouts as the John Jay baseball team held off the College of Staten Island, 9-7, to advance into the championship round of the 2007 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) baseball championship, ending the four year dynasty of the College of Staten Island. “Just another step closer for us,” said John Jay head coach Dan Palumbo. “The championship is still not ours though, we still have another round to go.” The Bloodhounds will play the City College of New York at 4 p.m., and with a win will play for the championship at 7 p.m. against the Beavers. John Jay took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Kenny Sepulveda to drive in Henry Chao. The Dolphins got even in the top of the third though on a sacrifice fly by Ray Valerio to drive in Bob Glennerster. But John Jay took the lead for good with five runs in the bottom half of the third to take a 6-1 lead. The scoring started with Massoni helping his cause by ripping a two-run single to right field that scored Chao and James DeCesare. Moments later Gonzalo Gonzalez drew a bases loaded walk to force home Sepulveda. After Richard Santana lined out to short, Massoni came in to score after an attempt to double up Johan Abad at second faltered as the pickoff attempt went into right field. Abad then scored on the next play on an RBI single up the middle by Tim Murphy. The Bloodhounds then registered a run in the fourth and fifth to take an 8-1 lead. The Dolphins did not go away however and crawled back into the game. They picked up two runs in the top of the sixth to narrow the gap. A single through the left side by Andrew Baio scored Mike Madalone. Then a wild pitch by the Bloodhounds would allow Brian Philipps to score. CSI continued to chip away at the lead. They got another run closer in the seventh on a bases loaded walk by Matt Thompson to score Joel Pratts. But relief pitcher Anthony Cestaro registered the final out of the inning and CSI left the bases loaded. The Bloodhounds added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI double by Abad that scored Massoni. The run proved to be an important cushion for John Jay as the Dolphins mounted a rally in the ninth inning to take a big dent into the lead. CSI poured on three runs in the top of the ninth and left the tying run on second with the bases loaded when the game ended. The Dolphins got the scoring started in the inning when after loading the bases Mohammed Hamad drew a one out walk to force home Jason Vasquez. CSI scored again as Thomas DeWaters reached on a fielder’s choice on a groundball to shortstop with two outs. But Hamad raced into second base to keep the inning alive. Meanwhile Philipps scored on the play. Next, with the bases still loaded, Valerio drew a walk to score Baio and move the tying run into scoring position. But Bloodhound closer Manny Rodriguez recorded the final out of the game to preserve the win for the Bloodhounds to advance to the championship round for the second year in a row. Both teams left a combined 27 runners on base (15 for CSI, 12 for John Jay). The Bloodhounds recorded 17 hits in the contest and got a 3-for-4 performances from Murphy, Sepulveda, and Gonzalez. “The guys played a solid game,” said Palumbo. “We know what’s at stake and we are going to come out and be ready to play on Saturday.” baseball 2007 cunyac REGULAR SEASON champions (1978-2007) Year 1978 1979 1980 1981 1982 1983 1984 1985 1986 1987 1988 1989 1990 1991 1992 1993 1994 1995 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 Champion John Jay John Jay Staten Island Staten Island Queens Brooklyn John Jay Staten Island John Jay Queens John Jay John Jay Staten Island Lehman John Jay Lehman Lehman Staten Island Lehman Staten Island Lehman Staten Island Staten Island John Jay John Jay Staten Island Staten Island John Jay Staten Island Lehman Staten Island Staten Island Staten Island Cazenovia New Jersey City John Jay John Jay CUNYAC 8-0 7-1 7-1 6-1 8-0 6-1 6-1 6-1 4-1 4-1 4-0 4-0 7-1 8-0 n/a n/a 8-2 9-1 7-1 8-0 4-0 4-0 3-1 7-1 5-1 5-1 6-0 5-1 4-2 4-2 6-0 6-0 5-1 11-2 11-3 18-0 16-2 overall n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a 25-8 n/a n/a 18-10 26-5 18-8 29-7 13-11 12-15 11-20 21-13 20-12 26-13 20-11 19-12 20-11 8-16 14-21 26-13 20-16 19-14 19-14 30-14 27-15 Head Coach Lou DeMartino Lou DeMartino Sonny Grasso Sonny Grasso Gary Krupsky n/a Lou DeMartino Sonny Grasso Lou DeMartino Gary Krupsky Lou DeMartino Lou DeMartino Matt Rozzi Nick Nikou Lou DeMartino Michael Fleischer Michael Fleischer Fran Hirschy Michael Fleischer Fran Hirschy Nick Nikou Bill Cali Bill Cali Lou DeMartino Lou DeMartino Bill Cali Bill Cali Lou DeMartino Bill Cali Juan ‘Kiko’ Reyes Bill Cali Bill Cali Bill Cali Pete Liddell Ken Heaton Dan Palumbo Dan Palumbo Player of the Year none selected none selected none selected none selected none selected none selected none selected none selected none selected none selected none selected none selected none selected Nelson Fernandez Victor Reich School n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a Lehman CSI Mickey Garcia Kevin Crombie Tom Tierney Willie Diaz Michael Cortazzo Jason Anarumo Juan ‘Kiko’ Reyes Joe Frittitta Juan ‘Kiko’ Reyes Lehman CSI CSI Lehman Lehman CSI Lehman John Jay Lehman Pitcher of the Year Mike Cosumano Kevin Crombie Michael Cortazzo Mike McInnis Ramon Pena Marcus Rodriguez Brian Burik School CSI CSI Lehman John Jay Baruch John Jay John Jay Frank Sansonetti Eric Sorensen Frank Sansonetti CSI John Jay CSI John Testa Rich Pasquale John Urrico CSI CSI CSI Robert Benjamin Miguel Jaquez Miguel Jaquez Miguel Jaquez Stephen Hillmann James DeCesare Seth Nowakowski Baruch John Jay John Jay John Jay John Jay John Jay Mitchell Peter Park Nick Secchini Nick Secchini Nick Secchini Rob Motacki John Dobkowski Salvatore Messina Baruch CSI CSI CSI NJCU John Jay Mitchell Baruch’s David Chestnut CUNYAC Rookie of the Year cunyac tournament champions (1983-2007) Year Champion Record (CUNY)Runner-up Score Stadium Winning Coach 1983 John Jay n/a Queens 17-5 n/a Lou DeMartino 1984 John Jay n/a Lehman 11-6 Shea Lou DeMartino 1985 John Jay n/a Lehman 11-5 Shea Lou DeMartino 1986 Staten Island 17-12 John Jay 4-2 Shea Matt Rozzi 1987 Lehman 25-8 (8-0) Staten Island 4-3 Shea Nick Nikou 1988 Staten Island 14-15 (7-1) John Jay 4-3 Shea Matt Rozzi 1989 Lehman 18-10 (8-2) Staten Island 9-4 Shea Michael Fleischer 1990 Staten Island 26-5 (9-1) John Jay 5-2 Shea Fran Hirschy 1991 Lehman 18-8 Staten Island 7-5 Shea Michael Fleischer 1992 Staten Island 29-7 Lehman 14-10 Queens Fran Hirschy 1993 Staten Island 15-9 Lehman 5-1 Yankee Fran Hirschy 1994 CCNY 10-12 (2-2) Lehman 7-3 St. John’s Basil Tarasko 1995 Lehman 21-13 (3-1) Staten Island 5-0 Yankee Steve Macias 1996 John Jay 21-13 (7-1) Staten Island 5-4 Yankee Lou DeMartino 1997 Staten Island 26-13 (5-1) John Jay 10-7 CSI Bill Cali 1998 Staten Island 20-11 (6-0) John Jay 6-2 Lehman Bill Cali 1999 John Jay 19-12 (5-1) Staten Island 12-9 CSI Lou DeMartino 2000 Staten Island 20-11 (4-2) Lehman 5-4 CSI Bill Cali 2001 Baruch 17-16 (3-3) Staten Island 5-3 Yankee Scott Losche 2002 John Jay 9-24 (2-4) Staten Island 9-8 (10 inn.) But the lead quickly evaporated in the bottom half of the frame when Richard Stockton exploded for four runs in the bottom of the third to take a 4-1 lead. The Bloodhounds committed two errors in the inning resulting in all four Osprey runs being unearned. Richard Stockton added another run in the bottom of the fourth to take a 5-1 lead. Ospreys’ Matt Allen (Salem, NJ/ Woodstown) recorded a triple that allowed Brian Reagle (Mangolia, NJ/ Sterling) to score. The host school then recorded four more runs in the seventh and another in the eighth to take a 10-1 lead.
