Reading Your child will bring a reading book home every day

Welcome back we hope you have all had a relaxing and enjoyable time. I would like to
give you some information about what your child will be learning about this term and
some information about the regular routines in the class.
Our Creative Curriculum Topic is MAD
ABOUT SCIENCE
Literacy
During our creative curriculum this term and
skills required for writing to reach Age
across a number of other curriculum areas
we will be doing some science experiments
and looking at the lives of some famous
scientists. This will include making
predictions and discussing why something
happened. We will be using a range of
literature to gain further information and
knowledge which we can apply to our work.
We will also apply our ICT skills to research
further. During our science lessons we will be
looking at plants and what they need to
survive. In RE we will be learning about
religious leaders and books/ stories. In PSHE
and Citizenship we will be learning about
changes and how to keep our hearts smart.
This term we will be looking at a variety of
Related Expectation for Year 2. There are
now high levels of expectations for spelling
in year 2 and this is going to be high on the
agenda this term. The children will apply
phonic knowledge and understanding to help
sound out unfamiliar words. The skill base
will continue to develop in writing allowing
the children to apply suffixes, a variety of
conjunctions, past and present tense and
contractions. The bank of knowledge they
have learnt now needs to be applied in all
writing activities (e.g. full stops, capital
letters and conjunctions). The hand writing
has improved considerably but is still high
priority as well as presentation of all work.
Numeracy
During Numeracy lessons this term we will be applying written methods to help solve problems,
to further understanding, as well as applying the correct method in different situations. The
children need to develop their rapid recall of arithmatic questions involving doubles/ halves,
number bonds, multiplication, addition, subtraction and division.
Reading
Your child will bring a reading book home every day.
Please read with your child for a short period each
night. Please make a note in the planner of the page
number or any positive comments you wish to make. Miss
Parker and Miss Cooper are keen to give and receive
comments about your child’s reading. If your child is on
Stage 9 or above could you please only read a maximum
of 5 pages to ensure your child understands what they
have read.
READING BOOKS SHOULD BE BROUGHT TO SCHOOL
EACH DAY.
Changing Books
If you child has read the book and
is ready to change their book please
make sure you sign the planner,
books will not be changed if there is
no signature. Please remind your
child to place their book bag in the
correct box (green for changing,
red if read but doesn’t need
changing), we do not go through
book bags. We also have a reading
rocket in class which the children
move up based on how often then
read and rewards are given (team
points).
Library Books
Each week your child will have the opportunity

look after these books as there will be a £5
charge to replace lost or damaged books.
OUR LIBRARY DAY IS TUESDAY so if your
child’s library book needs changing please
ensure they have it in school on Tuesdays.
Children in Y2 also have the opportunity to
visit the library at Friday lunchtime, when
they are also able to change their book.
Your child has a safe place to store their
kits and at the end of each term they will
be sent home to wash. If your child wears
earrings they should be removed on PE
days. If this is not possible they should
come to school with plasters securely
covering their earrings for safety.
Water
Children are encouraged to bring water to drink in the classroom. Please ensure your child
brings a water bottle each day. These can be refilled throughout the day at the water
dispensers.
