“The coaches have their say” Warwickshire Open Meeting 22nd September 2014 “The coaches have their say” Warwickshire Open Meeting 22nd Sepember 2014 Ryan Smith WSoR Phil Llewellyn Nuneaton RFC Andy Savage Nuneaton Old Eds RFC Welcome to our guests… • Thank you for giving up your time this evening • Session Aims – Increase our game knowledge – Build relationships with club coaches – Improve our refereeing of what matters Conor O’Shea & Richard Cockerill in 2013 “We try and take officials out of the equation but it was very hard to take him out of the equation. We'll go along the same lines we always do. Or we'll potentially just give up. If you are feeding stuff in and it's not being listened to or acted on ... there are things you tear your hair out [about]. Conor O’Shea You can understand Conor's frustration. As a coach you're diligent and you do your homework. You talk to the people in charge and say: 'This is what I'm observing, is this illegal?' If it doesn't get looked at, the perception is that the official hasn't done as much homework as the teams have. Richard Cockerill ” “ ” How do we avoid such incidents? • Dialogue’s key – We must understand what coaches want & (within the law) try to provide this – We both have a responsibility for what happens on match days • Preparation – Whatever the game we must prepare properly • Honesty – Must be honest with ourselves & others “Expectations of a referee on match day” Andy Savage Nuneaton Old Eds RFC Andy Savage Player - Nuneaton + Coventry Coach – Assistant coach at Nuneaton Head coach at Leicester Lions Presently Head coach at Nuneaton Old Eds Personal Qualities • Approachable • Communicator • Manager • Fitness/Image Officiating • Accuracy in Law • Consistency (in game and week to week) • Understand teams tactics Officiating • Before the Game (studs, toss, talk) • After the Game Level of Game • 1st team • 3rd team • Colts • Vets “Expectations of a referee on match day” Phil Llewellyn Nuneaton RFC My Approach Open and Honest Learning Opportunity We more the players and coaches learn the easier the referees job Seek Clarity not Negativity Reduce the Risk through Compliance Pre-Match Clarity on contentious elements of play Clarity from you on your process A heads up on what we do Half Time Are you happy?
