Elite Soccer: Professional Warm-Ups and Cool Downs

Issue number: 760
29th October, 2015
Hi david,
I've already told you in my newsletter about how Soccer Coach Weekly can give
youth teams that "winning difference" when they play matches - what I haven't told
you is that adult teams can also learn a lot from using the sessions and adapting
them to suit the type of play needed at their level.
This has become clear with the sponsorship of a local adult team, Burpham FC, that
are now training using Soccer Coach Weekly and some of the manuals I have
written.
22 goals in 6 games
"What impact has Soccer Coach Weekly really had on Burpham FC?", I hear you
ask. Well let me tell you about their 22 goals in 6 games...

Burpham FC had only won one game in the whole of the last season.
Understandably, they seemed like the ideal adult team to test out my Soccer Coach
Weekly sessions with.
For both Burpham and myself, the aim became about using these sessions to have
a positive impact on the development of their players, with the hope that their results
improved as a consequence.
Soccer Coach Weekly sponsored Burpham FC seek to dominate the midfield
using pressing techniques they learned from my sessions
They are in the same division and playing the same teams as last year, yet in 6
games this season they have won 3, drawn 2 and lost only once. To top it all off,
they've scored 22 GOALS to showcase their vast improvement!
The last match saw them run out 7-0 winners against Swinley Forest who had
scored over 120 goals last season. It was expected to be a close game with
Burpham second and Swinley third in the league, but the fabulous play of Burpham
quashed that expectation.
Burpham's Uefa B coach Scott Kemp said: "I read in Soccer Coach Weekly that if a
club used your sessions it COULD ALMOST GUARANTEE SUCCESS! And we
believe you, as we believe in developing players through quality coaching".
As you can see from Scott Kemp's tweet below, Burpham FC have also started
having great success by using my "keep ball" Rondos - Special Training
Guidealongside the Soccer Coach Weekly sessions.
Rondos - Special Training Guide has 15 great rondos-focused sessions, all of
which are free of charge if you sign up to a trial for Soccer Coach Weekly.
But this is a LIMITED TIME OFFER WHICH ENDS ON 9TH NOVEMBER so you'll
have to move as quickly as Burpham FC's forward line in their latest victory to bag
your copy.
And to give you a taste of the success Burpham FC are having, you can use my

myRondos - Special Training Guide and there are 14 more just like it to fire up

Scoring more goals is the aim for all teams. If you want to improve your team's
goalscoring record, as Burpham FC have done, then try out this session!
Why use it?
This session will help your team to score before your opponents by delivering them
the knock out punch. It is a fast game with constantly changing teams, and it gets
attackers to sniff out opportunities and capitalise on them.
Set up
Set up an area of 15x15 yards with goals at each end and with the corners coned off
from the edge of the goal to the centre. We've used 10 players. You need balls,
bibs, cones and two normal goals.
How to play
Split the players into two teams of four plus two goalkeepers. Two players from each
team play in the area, with two players each in the corner zones at the end their
team is attacking.
Players can make use of their team-mates in the corner, who play one-touch, but if
they do they must then swap places with that player, who comes onto the pitch. If a
team scores, the opposing central players swap with their team-mates on the
outside. The scoring team stays on and receives another ball from their keeper.
Technique
This session gets players to use good technique at speed and under pressure
conditions. It is good fun and all players are involved in using skills and technique to
score goals.

Guide with 14 further rondos sessions, then subscribe to Soccer Coach

County, all the way to both Manchester clubs.
Steele, who left Man Utd in 2013 when David Moyes
was appointed manager, is currently a goalkeeping
coach with the England youth teams.
Eric is one of the highly esteemed coaches who

What does Eric's Elite Soccer session
focus on?
The latest issue of
Elite Soccer
"This is a focused possession practice that uses keepers at every opportunity,
engaging them as key players in overloads and ball retention.
The session develops in both pitch size and complexity, enabling all players to
master the dynamics of possession in designated areas, with an eye on team
mates, opponents, use of space, angles of passing and protection of the ball.
This is a practice we will run regularly - it's competitive, fast and lively, and unlike
some training ground exercises it enables keepers to feel fully engaged with outfield
players."

"What games can I play with my
young keepers?"
By Steve Watson, youth coach
QUESTION:
Hello Steve,
Can you help me with a goalkeeping problem?
My U9 team doesn't have a dedicated goalkeeper (no one wants the job
unfortunately) so we rotate all 10 of our players through the position. Everyone gets
a turn, even our star striker!
I try to devote a few minutes of every practice to pure goalkeeping but it's not easy
finding new games for them to play that work on their goalkeeping skills.
Have you any suggestions?
ANSWER:
Firstly, let me say you're doing the right thing giving all
your players a chance to play in goal.
Lots of coaches in your position just put their weaker
players between the sticks but that's not fair on those
players and it's also shortsighted; star attackers can easily
become star goalkeepers, given the chance!
This is one of my favourite goalkeeping games:

Steve Watson,
Youth Coach
Place 3 cones in a triangle 10 yards apart in the middle of a 20x20 playing
area.

1 player is inside the triangle as the keeper.

2 or 3 more players try to possess the ball and score goals by moving the
keeper out of position and playing through the triangle.

If the keeper intercepts the ball, the player who played the ball last becomes
the new keeper.

It's fast moving, lots of fun and will give all your players a chance to practice
their keeper skills.

£5 off our bestselling manual!
I know how difficult it can be to find coaching resources that really work - especially
when you want to see the improvements on the pitch that so many coaching
manuals out there promise, and fail to deliver.
64 Small-Sided Soccer Games is a brilliant, alternative
manual because the coach gets to sit out... the game is the
teacher!
It's our bestselling coaching manual, and in minutes you will
see exactly why.
Created, tried and tested by U21 Premier League Academy
coach Michael Beale based on the legendary Dutch Way,
the tactics themselves are very simple:
Players defend in small groups, attack in small groups and
experience transition. It means they constantly have to
make decisions, and most importantly, learn from them.
As a result, every move by a player with or without the ball is a moment of quality every move matters.
The icing on the cake? These games are genuinely fun!
To celebrate its relaunch, we're offering £5 off this huge asset to your coaching
toolbox - so grab this special discount whilst you still can.
Simple nutrition tips to boost your
players' performance
One of the things I always emphasise to my players is that if they really want to
improve, they need to treat their bodies well. Whilst many players train hard and do
lots of exercise, the foods they put into their bodies often doesn't complement the
effort they put in.
As a result, this week I'm going to set out some nutrition guidelines that you can
share with your players so that they're eating the best foods for their bodies.
Football Nutrition Tips:

A meal containing a protein source and a combination of carbohydrates
should be eaten within an hour of finishing a game or training session.

After a hard session or match, fruits, sandwiches, and protein shakes start
the refuelling process.

Review your protein intake - you probably need a bit more if you are
training hard and playing regularly.

Emphasize low-GI, carbohydrate-rich foods rather than high-GI foods in
your normal diet.

Eat high-GI foods - bananas, sports drinks, pasta, for example immediately after exercising.

Eat fewer refined and simple carbohydrates, such as white bread and
sugar.

Eat smaller meals and eat more often to encourage stable energy and
blood sugar levels.

Eat as much variety as possible - instead of focusing on wheat based
products (such as cereals, breads and snack bars), try rye bread, oats or
quinoa flakes instead.

Eat complex carbohydrates three hours before a competition or hard
training session.

Fitness 4 Sport recommends that you always make dietary changes under
the guidance of a professional and consult your GP before you start.

To optimise your energy stores for games aim to increase your
carbohydrate intake to 10g/kg bodyweight during the 3 days prior to the
game and taper your training.
How important is the Glycaemic Index?
Considering the influence of different types of carbohydrate foods is fundamental to
your nutrition plan. Coaches and players are now recognising the importance of the
Glycaemic Index.
The Glycaemic Index provides a guideline for measuring the speed of energy
release into the blood stream. Certain foods are rated with a high glycaemic index
while others are low, and most fall in between.
The different types of carbohydrates vary in their rates of absorption, digestion, and
influence on blood sugar levels. A food's glycemic index (GI) is used to describe the
rate at which the food raises blood glucose levels.
High-GI foods, such as white bread and honey, rapidly increase blood sugar and
trigger the production of large amounts of insulin to counteract the rise. Low-GI
carbohydrates, such as apples, porridge, oats, and lentils, have a slower rate of
sugar absorption and therefore produce less insulin.
Low-GI-carbohydrate-rich foods are more appropriate sources of energy for fuelling
training and competition, and they reduce the likelihood of carbohydrate intake
increasing body fat amounts.
Protein
Football players require a greater intake of protein than sedentary people because
protein builds muscle and helps to repair muscle damaged during contact or weight
training.
Protein is also an energy source, although that is not its primary role. It can be
burned as a backup fuel to produce energy when glycogen levels are in short supply
- like the crucial last 10 minutes of a tough game.
Similar to that for carbohydrates, protein intake should be regulated according to
body weight and the amounts of strength, power, and contact training in the
program.
Players who want to increase or maintain muscle mass while following a demanding
conditioning program require up to 2.0 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight
in their diet each day.
Because it's difficult to take in enough meat, dairy products, and other protein-rich
foods to meet that requirement in a day, many players use protein drinks (whey
protein powder mixed with non-fat or low-fat milk or water) to help them reach this
level of intake.
Top tip
High-GI foods are beneficial immediately after exercise because they help the blood
sugar quickly return to a normal level.
5 top pre-match tips:

Eat a main meal at least 3 hours prior to kick-off, focusing on carbohydrate
rich foods with a small protein source.

A small snack such as an apple 1½ hours before kick-off.

Avoid very high protein and fat foods.

Drink plenty of fluid.

Experiment with foods during training to find what suits you best.
Fact file
Alcohol hampers not only hydration and energy replenishment, but also the repair of
tissue damaged by contact.
