Yenworthy Lodge Learning Goal Lesson Plan Introduction If you have been to Yenworthy before you will know that we introduce our 6 Learning goals at the beginning of the course, often out on the ropes course. The Learning Goals are the underlying principles that underpin every aspect of each residential visit and will be introduced, developed and reinforced during your Yenworthy Experience. These are fundamentally linked to the National Curriculum. They will form the basis for the week and all the things the students will learn about themselves, the activities and others. On a Friday we revisit the Learning Goals and review exactly what the students have learnt from their experiences. As a centre we are constantly evolving, and to improve the students understanding and also the time restraints of a busy it is great if you could set aside some time in the week before you come – maybe last thing Friday afternoon - to introduce our Learning Goals, this then means that they have some understanding of our goals for them whilst they are here. We envisage this should take about an hour and hopefully should be an interesting preparation for their week. This lesson does require you to have some prior knowledge and understanding of our Learning Goals (See appendix 1) which if you have visited us before should not be a problem. If you are new to our Learning Goals and would like to discuss them in a bit more detail your Yenworthy Course Director would be happy to do this – just ask. Obviously you may have your own ideas of how you would like to run this session which is great – just let us know how it went and share your ideas with us! Learning Objectives To introduce students to our Learning Goals to give them a basic understanding before their visit. To make students (and parents!) realise the individual learning and development that will take place during their visit - it is not just for fun! Resources: Copy of Learning Goals, whiteboard template and crib sheet (appendix 1, 2 & 3), whiteboard, paper, pens. The appendix templates can be used on an interactive whiteboard. Teaching Session: Introduction Task Before session starts divide your board into 6 areas with Learning Goals as headings. You can write our sayings e.g.’ Less about me, more about we’ under each heading if you think it would help the students understanding. Explain to the students that you want them to think about why they are going to Yenworthy and what they think they will learn? Discuss what they think they will learn about themselves; their teachers; others. Get them to write ideas down in their diaries. (Interesting to refer back to after visit.) Main Teaching activities Ask for their ideas and as they suggest them précis comments into correct learning goal e.g. if they say to become ‘more independent’ this goes under ‘Packing the Sac’; if they say to ‘take part in new activities’ this comes under ‘Adventure for Life’. Once you have all the ideas hopefully you should have a pretty full board but there will probably be some gaps. Don’t worry about this they will be filled in later. Explain that these are great ideas and that they will learn more than they ever thought they would – it is not just a fun trip! Now introduce and explain each Learning Goal, leaving Packing the Sac until the end. Add any pertinent comments that have been missed during the brainstorming session. Summary, conclusions, how to take forward Explain why Packing the Sac is in the middle – because there is a part of each Learning Goal in Packing the Sac - BUT make sure you include being independent, teamwork, having confidence and being trustworthy which may not have come out in previous discussions but which are vitally important. If there is time you could get students to design a poster about one of the Learning Goals or divide the class into teams and give each team a different Learning Goal. In their teams they could then explain their poster to the rest of the class. Or perhaps do a little skit outlining their learning goal. Explain that when they arrive at Yenworthy a member of staff will reinforce the Learning Goals and that they will be referred to throughout their stay. On return from Yenworthy it might be nice to have some reflection time – revisit notes they made on what they thought they would learn and compare them with what they did learn. Appendix 1 Yenworthy Lodge Learning goals Caring and Sharing Caring and sharing is about thinking of others needs as well as your own, being honest, kind and considerate to help us learn to live together in society. ‘Less about me, more about we’ Being a Social Being This goal is about how important it is to communicate e.g. talk, listen and understand, and how the things you say and do affect the people around you. ‘Smile and the world smiles with you’ Packing the Sac This goal is about learning skills that you can use in your everyday lives e.g. working in a team, trusting and being trustworthy, being independent and having the confidence to try new things. ‘Learning for Life’ Adventure for Life To promote a balanced healthy lifestyle through adventure and new challenges, to learn about the importance of food, fitness and fun. ‘I can’ Risky Business We encounter risks as part of everyday life, this goal aims to help you rise to the challenge and manage risks to keep you safe. ‘Nothing ventured, nothing gained’ Making the Future Making the future aims to help you appreciate what an amazing planet you are living on and thinking of ways you can help towards sustainable development, ensuring it stays that way for future generations. ‘Reduce, reuse, repair, recycle’
