House Team Manager Handbook

Team Manager Handbook
(House Teams)
Team Managers are an integral part of the Junior Fuel Hockey Club (JFHC)
Thank you for agreeing to serve as the Team Manager (TM) for your team. An organized Team
Manager is vital to a successful season. Being a TM is an educational and rewarding position. You
can take great pride, knowing your involvement made for a positive experience for your Players,
Parents, and Coaches. This handbook will serve as a resource guide to help you in your role.
Know however, that you are never alone and you can ask an association member at any time for
assistance. The JFHC welcomes you and thanks you for your time and effort!
Being a team manager means you will be a member of USA Hockey. You will go to the USA Hockey
website and register for FREE as an ice manager/volunteer. This free membership does not allow
for on ice participation.
USA Hockey (The National non-profit governing body for amateur hockey competition)









United States. In 1990, the name was changed to USA Hockey.
Coordinates all amateur competition.
Responsible for the selection & training of the U.S. National & Olympic teams.

governance.

given guidance on how to complete this.
Outline of Team Manager’s Duties
1) Communicator
a) You will be the point of contact between the team’s coaches, families, JFHC
organization, and other sources outside the team.
b) You will be a diplomatic leader to help keep the communication positive between all
members.
c) You may organize a team meeting at the start of the season. A sample outline of
items to include are as follows:



Welcome and introduction of TM, coaches, players, and parents
Coaches Philosophy, team policies (may provide a handout)
Discuss players and parents code of conduct –found on USA Hockey website. It
was a requirement to sign this to register with the JFHC.




Discuss Safe Sport policies, including no uncertified parents in locker rooms and
no cell phones in locker rooms.
Communication plan for team: Recommended is email and team website on
SportsEngine (The Junior Fuel Website).
You may print rosters for families. Some teams create and laminate small roster
cards for easy access during games with player name and number. Template
available on Sport Engine.
Discuss volunteer positions and delegate tasks such as; penalty box, score keeper,
timekeeper, locker parents (must be certified), or other areas you as the TM may
need help.
2) Records Keeper


Scoresheets – these will be provided to you by the JFHC. When you are the
home team, you will be responsible to provide a scorekeeper (yourself or
delegate the task). Double check score sheets for completeness and accuracy
and have coaches and on-ice officials sign the completed sheet. Once
complete: White (original) stays with the you, the TM, Yellow – home coach,
Pink- away coach or TM. On-Ice officials will tell you the player who scores a
goal, receives a penalty and why, etc. Do not hesitate to ask for clarification as
they are your best resource.
Scoresheet labels are handy – pre-printed labels with the roster, coach’s
names, and coach’s certification numbers. Avery 8163 labels work well
(template is available on the resources tab of the JFHC website). You can use
labels or manually write in your roster, coaches names, and certification
numbers on every score sheet. When you are the home team, you must give
the scoresheet to the visiting team to complete their roster. Expect the same
when you are visiting another facility, to be presented with a scoresheet to
complete your roster and coach info.
3) Volunteers
It will be in your best interest to round up volunteers to help you in your role. Suggested
volunteer roles include:



Locker room monitors. JFHC and USA Hockey requires a voluntary adult or coach
who has completed the USA Hockey Safe Sport modules and a background screen
to monitor the locker rooms. The JFHC locker room policy is available on the
Team Managers resource tab on the Junior Fuel website.
When you are the “home” team, you will need a scorekeeper, timeclock keeper,
and a penalty box volunteer for your team’s box. You may use a sign up app of
your choice to keep track of team volunteers.
Someone to help organize and round up players for picture day.

Try to have as many volunteers that are willing to complete volunteer
certifications. This will be to your benefit, having parents ready to help you in
times of need.
Other helpful hints





You may plan an end of season gift for coaches
Don’t be afraid to ask other seasoned team managers for help
If you are a seasoned team manager, reach out to others to offer support
