Smith-Cotton Varsity Wrestling Bill Skillman Memorial Tournament Saturday 1-23-2016 The Smith-Cotton Tigers had a great weekend of wrestling as both the Varsity and Junior Varsity teams wrestled in the Bill Skillman Memorial Tournament, which is a team dual tournament held in Kearney, MO. The varsity grapplers finished the day with a 3-1 dual record to finish second to the home team. Matchups included wins against the Rockwood Summit Falcons (48-27), Harrisonville Wildcats (41-28), and the Liberty North Eagles (42-33), and a loss to the Kearney Bulldogs (20-46). The Tigers have an outstanding Varsity Dual record of 11-4 for the season. The Tigers were led by undefeated performances from Blake Pomajzl, Justin Osburn, and Jake McFail. Pomajzl, a sophomore, earned two pins, one technical fall, and a decision. Osburn, freshman, won by forfeit and two decisions before wrestling while injured in his final match, pinning his opponent. McFail, a senior, wrestled his way to two pins, a technical fall, and a forfeit. There were many other great matches throughout the day. Izaiah Snyder wrestled three very tough matches that all went the distance and ended in decisions, with him winning two and losing one. Snyder, Connor Siron, and Michael Laster all finished the day 3-1. Noah Aziere, who finished 2-2 on the day, wrestled two of the top-rated 182lb wrestlers in the state and wrestled both of them to the very end, giving them a tough match and getting a good look at the competition for the state tournament. “We started out slow today. As coaches, we could have done more to get the kids ready to wrestle the early morning matches, but we regrouped and the kids took care of business for the remainder of the day. There were some very good matches today and our wrestlers helped themselves out by beating some district opponents, which will help them in getting to the State tournament.” Smith-Cotton Coach Charlie McFail. These young kids are nearing the end of their season, and they are taking advantage of every opportunity to get better.” Smith-Cotton Assistant Coach Tommy Kindle.
