Their service is acceptable; your service is acceptable. Their prices are competitive; your prices are competitive. In other words, the buyer looks at your package and the competitor’s package and sees parity, along the product dimension and company dimension. What’s a salesperson to do? The same product, from the same company, from two different salespeople is two different solutions altogether. Two Fortune-500 type companies asked how much value their salespeople bring to the table and discovered that 35-37% of the value customers receive comes from the people with whom they do business. Do you bring that much value to the table? If you left your company tomorrow and went to work for a really good competitor, how much business would you take with you? If your answer is “little” or “none”, I would argue that you’re not bringing much value to the customer. When products are similar or the same, and the suppliers’ services rival each other, the only thing left to differentiate a solution is the salesperson. How much are you worth to the customer? A business owner told me that he wanted to be routinely 10% higher than the competition. “If the buyer doesn’t feel I’m at least 10% better than the competition, I need to know about it,” he said. April 5 – 9, ......24th Annual Meeting 2008 & Convention Colonial Williamsburg Williamsburg, VA Register Online for the NAHAD 2008 Annual Meeting at www.nahad.org Tom Reilly If you couldn’t sell at a cheaper price, how would you communicate your value to the customer? If you couldn’t argue that your service was any better than the competition, how would you sell? If you couldn’t rely on product differentiation, what would you use as an advantage? You would have only yourself left to sell. You must be able to answer this question for the customer, “Why should the buyer want to do business with you as a salesperson?” You are the “product” over which you have the most control. We have planned an excellent program with some very powerful take-aways. Whether you are looking to enhance your marketing efforts, focusing on sustaining growth in your bottom line, reviewing your sales force goals or concerned about customer loyalty – I know you will find answers for your company. And, the networking with industry leaders has always proved invaluable to me. Make plans now to join us in Williamsburg and let NAHAD assist with your business climate in 2008. S& NAHAD NEWS STAFF I urge each of you, as you look at your business plans for 2008, to make NAHAD membership a strong component of your arsenal of business tools. The Hose Assembly Guidelines program has some excellent tools for employee training (note the 808 exam passers that have earned certificates over the past 20 months). As we seek to retain key employees and provide motivation during uncertain economic times, this type of product training can be a powerful and relatively low-cost tool. And, as suppliers and end-users continue to pre-qualify the distribution companies with whom they do business, the NAHAD Listed member program can provide a strong leg up during the bidding process. Ahuero I don’t know how it is for your business, but I did come away from that meeting with determination to recognize the market factors in my business and to plan ahead for better days in the future. The economists suggested that hunkering down in a protective mode may not be the best strategy for the future of an industrial distribution business. It is a natural reaction to an economic swing, but setting your business on a good course for the future can be a better choice for business longevity and productivity. YTO PAST PRESIDENTS Have we, as some economists and the media suggest, entered into a recession in the US economy? Or, are we, as the economists and experts that we heard at the NAW meeting, still due for modest gains in 2008 with a recession due for 2009? The answer to me, and to many in the room, can be a function of geography. Those with businesses in Texas may be experiencing the continuation of the business growth cycle, while distributors in other states are working hard for every sale – thinking that if the recession has not yet arrived, it certainly feels like a recession. It was an exciting time to be in our nation’s capitol, taking place during the time of the President’s State of the Union Address and as the political candidates for president move through the primaries and edge closer to final selection of the two main candidates for president in 2008. However, as I sat in the audience of approximately 200 CEOs and key employees of industrial distribution company owners, my focus was on the economy and what it will mean for my business during the year ahead. Thompson, Jr. Executive Vice President PRESIDENT’S LETTER SP OFFICERS When You Can’t Compete on Price Continued from page 1 You may not be able to do anything about your product’s quality or your company’s service level, but you can do something about your performance. One study found that the salesperson’s competence is the number one factor accounting for overall customer satisfaction. All other things being equal, would the customer pay to do business with you, as a salesperson? You can increase your value to the customer by doing the following: Study. Become a serious student of our profession. Increase the value of your knowledge. Study the market, your company, the customer, your products, and our profession. Become an expert. Learn so much about your craft that the customer can’t afford not to do business with you. Become the benchmark by which all other salespeople are judged. Follow up. The number one complaint buyers have about salespeople is a lack of follow-up. Guarantee your follow-up. Advise buyers that this is part of your value added. Assure them that you will be there after the sale to guarantee their complete satisfaction with your solution. Promise them accessibility before, during, and after the sale. Promise a lot, but always deliver more than what you promise. Seek to add value, not cost. Diligently look for ways to add value with your performance. The customer must perceive you as a profit center, not a cost center. Help the customer achieve greater efficiency and higher productivity. Help the buyer gain maximum performance from your solution. Work as hard to keep the business as you did to get the business. Look for ways to re-create value at every turn. So, if you couldn’t compete on your price, your product, or your company’s service, how would you compete? Would your customers be willing to pay more to do business with you, the salesperson? You may be the most significant competitive advantage that your company offers. Tom Reilly is a professional speaker and author of Value Added Selling. NAHAD Membership Committee and Board of Directors Make Changes to Manufacturer and Affiliate Membership Criteria T he Membership Committee of NAHAD met recently with several members of the NAHAD Executive Committee to review the impact of two recent membership category changes. Interested members can find the NAHAD Membership Requirements on page 175 of the 2007-2008 Membership Directory. As proposed by the Membership Committee last May, the changes are as follows: Amended item (b) of the Manufacturer Requirements, previously listed as: (b) the manufacture of hose-related mechanical equipment, hose manufacturing or fabrication systems, marketed to manufacturers and/or distributors of flexible hose products, connectors, couplings and/or clamps, to become: (b) the manufacture of hose-related mechanical equipment, hose manufacturing or fabrication systems, marketed to and/or through distributors of flexible hose products, connectors, couplings and/or clamps. 3. Amended the first sentence of the Affiliate Requirements, previously listed as: Any partnership, corporation or other entity regularly engaged in the business of providing products and/or services to the members of the Association, and wishing to support the marketing of hose and coupling products and/or services primarily through distributors, to become: Any partnership, corporation or other entity regularly engaged in the business of providing products and/or services to the members of the Association, and whose products and/or services are marketed to and/or through distributors. The changes affect seven current NAHAD members. Under the new definition, two companies will see a change in membership category in 2008 from Manufacturer to Affiliate member. There are five companies who previously have been listed as Affiliates, but who have been reclassified to Manufacturer under the new definition. All new applications for NAHAD membership will adhere to the new requirements. Is Your Company Part of the 2007 Economic Census? R ight now, more than 4 million American businesses, including 430,000 wholesalers, have their 2007 Economic Census forms in front of them. The forms, mailed in December, are due in less than a month, February 12, 2008. While many very small businesses were not sent a form, those businesses that did get a form are required by law (Title 13, U.S. Code) to complete and return it. Many businesses may not realize how important this census is — how the data, though collected only once every five years, support both public policy and business decisions, both national and local. Chairman, Steve Gray; Committee Members, Don Fritzinger, Alex McGill, Ted Hoaglin, Linda Murphy, Rob Lyons and NAHAD Staff, Joe Thompson, Nicole Weber and Debbie Mitchell were present on the conference call. The meeting minutes from last meeting, Nov. 14, 2007 in Houston, Texas were accepted and approved. The following items were discussed: Standards Committee – General Business Item 1: Re-thinking the cost to NAHAD members of the Hose Assembly Guidelines Specification manuals (currently $50 for non Listed NAHAD members as well as non NAHAD members). The group feels the current pricing represents excellent value, particularly in comparison with similar documents from other organizations such as RMA or ISO. DECISION: NAHAD will continue to offer the manuals at the current price of $50 for non-Listed members and $15 for Listed members. Item 2: Preparations for Convention The Standards Committee will provide a Hose Assembly Guidelines update to the membership at 9:00 am -11:30 am on Saturday, April 5 in Williamsburg. Topics will include: a brief program update; driving the Guidelines through your organization, (“HAG for Dummies”); a tutorial on creating a quality program leveraging the Guidelines; a tutorial on leveraging the Guidelines to help sell/market to your customers; the new Custom Made Hose Guide; training videos discussion, including a prototype demonstration; a Marketing Tri-fold (explaining the value of the Hose Assembly Guidelines to end users); a demonstration of the upgraded NAHAD website; and, if possible, introduce the re-done Hydraulic Fabrication Guide. The committee would also like to invite a Training Coordinator to discuss his or her experience with implementing the Hose Assembly Guidelines at a member company. The Standards Committee will plan to meet on Friday, April 4 prior to the start of the Convention. Training Sub-committee Sub-committee membership will be expanded to include Wendy Woten of Jay-Max Sales, Inc. and Robyn Henderson of RGA – North Little Rock. Item 1: Exam activity to date; Purchased: 1088 Specification exams (industrial and 4 • THE NAHAD NEWS hydraulic reflecting the greatest numbers), 808 passed to date. 112 Design/Fabrication exams purchased (all activity here is in industrial and hydraulic), 71 passed to date. Item 2: Video training update; This is an area of great value-add potential for NAHAD. The objective over time is to create a video clip library that can provide the membership with just-in-time training on a variety of hose assembly fabrication techniques, safety issues, hose assembly failures, etc. Many of these could be integrated into the various on-line Fabrication guides, or housed elsewhere on-line. The sub-committee would also like to look at providing other types of video clips such as the value proposition for the Hose Assembly Guidelines and how to leverage that with customers, or interviews with experts on various topics. Chairman, Alex McGill will work with Debbie Mitchell and Joe to draft a plan for driving this opportunity – to include a process for identifying key areas in the Fabrication guides where a video would be useful (via the Technical Teams for each Hose Assembly Group), how to solicit videos from the membership (videos would be reviewed and approved by the Technical Teams), and where/how to house them on-line. Marketing Sub-Committee Sub-committee membership; will be expanded to include Jim Reilly of GHX and Lauren Witter of Omni Services. Item 1: Creation of HAG “tri-fold” for members to use in marketing the value of the Hose Assembly Guidelines; this represents a key value-add tool for the membership. Chairman, Rob Lyons and NAHAD Staff, Debbie Mitchell and Joe Thompson will draft the content for a tri-fold marketing piece and circulate it to the Standards Committee for comment/editing. The plan is to have this piece ready for delivery at the Convention. Item 2: eMarketing project update; NAHAD is in the process of soliciting multiple bids for the Board-approved upgrade to the NAHAD website, which will include eMarketing and other capabilities. Task Group Updates The Standards Committee reviewed a draft of Custom Made Hose Guide, with recommendations from the Task Group on further actions. The Committee was impressed with the first review of the Custom Hose Guide and will review the document in depth and be prepared to discuss next steps at the committee’s next meeting. At that point recom- mendations will be submitted to the Board of Directors regarding the form and delivery method of the Custom Made Hose Guide. Status update on the Ducting Task Group – Linda Murphy of Flex Enterprises is working to engage Task Group members and build momentum for this project. Assembly Group Updates Hydraulic Design guide rework – update: excellent progress is being made on updating this Design Guide. Thought will need to be given to implications for the Hydraulic Design/Fabrication exam. The new Audit Task Group will be given the duty to police an overall Hose Assembly Guidelines update process, including a defined review schedule. Custom Made Hose The Guide is to be called Custom Made Hose Guide - working with and distributing Custom Made Hose (Also referred to as Hand-Made Hose or Hand-Built Hose) Under the NAHAD staff guidance of Debbie Mitchell, Standards Manager, and Nicole Weber, Program Manager, a NAHAD working committee originally called the HandBuilt Hose committee has been meeting for several months. The committee, comprised of James Dunchuck of Salem Republic Rubber, Buddy Pepp of Titan Industries, Chad Rogers of Salem Republic Rubber, Don Slowicki of Home Rubber, Bill Thompson of Texcel, John Jeffrey of Watteredge Industrial Hose, Ron Chevalier of Veyance Technologies – Goodyear Engineered Products and Gary Wood of HBD Thermoid, has presented a first draft of the entire guide for review and comments by the Standards Committee. Despite the short timeframe of only two months until the convention in Williamsburg, there is some hope that the new guide will be ready for review by the membership in April. Audit Task Group The newly formed Audit Task Group will meet by teleconference in February. They have been charged with the following responsibilities: • Verification or certification for Listed Members – Determine what type of verification/certification process NAHAD should have for Listed Distributor Members. Should there be an onsite audit by a third party to review adherence to the guidelines? • Audit Tools - There are tools to be developed in the Design and Fabrication guides that will allow distributor fabricators to self audit themselves in conjunction with the fabrication text that has been developed. • Duty To Educate – This would be text added to the Design and Fabrication guidelines and would be a method and a tool for distributors to use to protect themselves in regards to liability in the proper selection and use of products they sell. • Testing Group – Request was made to add to NAHAD’s Hose Assembly Guideline documents a list of testing facilities that are capable of doing the required testing on products, such as pressure testing, impulse testing, failure analysis and cleanliness. Audit Task Group membership: Chairman Mike Armbruster Members Thomas von Hillebrandt, Robyn Henderson, Scott Jones, Sam Petillo, Karen Helm Listed Subcommittee The committee met on February 4 to review the following agenda items: • Recruitment of Listed Members – This would entail the development of a group to directly contact non listed distributor members for the purpose of recruitment. The objective would be to solicit volunteer recruiters on a regional basis who are active distributor/ manufacturing members who are passionate about the Hose Assembly Guidelines program that can inform the members of the use and value of membership • Develop Hose Assembly Guidelines value tool – This was requested at the meeting in Houston, Texas to develop a trifold that illustrated the value of the program from an end-user perspective and distributor perspective. • Fee Simplification – Look at the current fee structure and develop a new method that addresses administrative concerns to reduce the time and cost of the process. Also, look at the current confusion the multiple listings create for the distributor members and develop simplified dues and product listing method. In that short time, the operation has opened a completely new manufacturing facility, as well as expanded its product line offerings to the fire protection market. Craig French, plant manager, and many other veteran Powhatan employees made the move to the company’s new manufacturing operations located in Winchester, Virginia. Bob Grace, general manager of Dixon Powhatan states, “Much of the success of this acquisition is due to the fact that we were able to retain key players from the original company.” Crane, 41, is a 1988 graduate of Denison University in Granville, Ohio. He was employed by Lewis-Goetz for two years before completing a master’s degree in international political economy from the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public and International Affairs. According to Hazen Arnold, sales manager, the design of the Winchester facility was driven by the need for customers to have a steady available supply of products. The new plant is a true “made for stock” facility rather than “made to order” operation. This means that customers – no matter where they are located – can receive orders the very next day as opposed to waiting for days or weeks for them to arrive. In addition to supplying the complete standard Dixon Powhatan line, quick delivery is also provided on specialthread items to meet the individualized needs of customers. Long used in the health care industry, it has expanded into the food, toy, instrumentation, exercise equipment, and sporting goods fields. Known for its extreme flexibility, latex is among the most elastic rubber materials in use today. Resiliency is another quality of latex tubing, allowing it to maintain memory after repeated elongation, distortion, and pulsation. NewAge’s latex tubing, called Newtex, also withstands repeated sterilization with steam, Ethylene Oxide, or gamma radiation. There are no added plasticizers, coagulants, or fillers to migrate and contaminate the stream or cause tube hardening. Newtex remains flexible even at cold temperatures approaching -60°F (-51°C). Newtex is made from pure, liquid, natural latex. The tubing is seamless, uniform, and smooth for maximum flow. All ingredients are non-toxic and conform to FDA standards. The company stocks Newtex in eighteen sizes, ranging from .063” to .750” I.D., for same-day or JIT (Just In Time) shipment. A variety of fittings and clamps are also carried. Synthetic latex, or polyisoprene, tubing is offered as a custom item. It is made without the allergen-causing protein found in natural latex. Due to manufacturing limitations, Newtex may be supplied in multiple pieces per length of tubing. For additional information, phone 800-50-NEWAGE (800-506-3924) or visit the product-specific web page: www.newageindustries.com/latex_tubing.asp. ■ ■ ■ Apache Hose and Belting announces completion of the acquisition of Hose Central. C arolina Plastics, Inc., a South Carolina based corporation since 1987, was established to recover polymer materials often disposed of on textile industry such as plastic films, bale wrappings, and yarn carriers. These materials were collected, processed, and returned as feed stocks to polymer industry. As textiles began to consolidate and move manufacturing operations off shore, the company grew to serve the needs of the extrusion industry, developing specialized shredding equipment to handle thick wall, large diameter pipe. The company developed a strong customer base in the areas of pipe and profile extrusion. The textile background of the company leadership, coupled with the experience of working closely with the extrusion industry lead to opportunities to evaluate scrim reinforced extruded poly products. Many of these products were destined for landfills due to the mix of materials. After a significant investment of time and resources the company successfully developed equipment to separate scrim material from polymers. This service is now offered in the extrusion industry as a closed loop recycling process. Off spec materials, purge trimmings, and other materials not meeting quality product requirements are collected and shipped by the manufacturer to Carolina Plastics for recovery. The recovered polymers are processed into regrind or pellets and are packaged for re-use by the manufacturer. Where materials may not be reintroduced into the manufacturing line due to FDA or other regulations, Carolina Plastics works with the manufacturer to guarantee recycling of the materials into a non-competing product line. Carolina Plastics, Inc. joined NAHAD to learn more about the environment and logistical challenges face by the hose industry. Jennifer Jaynes, a senior account executive, summed up the company view recently when she said, “We are pleased to be part of such a great organization, NAHAD provides the resources and learning opportunities to expand our services in the hose and tubing industries.” Jennifer and the sales team at Carolina Plastics are available to share more about how Carolina Plastics services may be of benefit to NAHAD member companies and may be reached at (864) 885-9555 or via e-mail at [email protected]. When will the NAW Insurance Trust be available in my area? Traditional Group Health Insurance vs. the NAW Insurance Trust The NAW Insurance Trust is being rolled out to members according to the following schedule: Traditional Group Health Insurance • Starting with November 1, 2007 policy effective dates – AZ, GA, MI, MO, NC, OH, TX, VA, UT • Additional states will be announced soon. A member (employer group) receives a quote from a health insurance carrier based on their Standard Industrial Code (SIC), location, employee demographics, medical history and plan design(s). If the member accepts the quote and purchases the insurance policy, the premium invoiced to the member represents the insurance carrier’s expenses, profit margin and estimated annual claims activity. If the member’s claim activity is worse than anticipated, the member is not required to pay any additional premium. If the claim activity is better than anticipated, the carrier keeps the difference. The NAW Insurance Trust A member participating in the NAW Insurance Trust receives a quote from our carrier, Trustmark Insurance Company or Trustmark Life Insurance Company (Trustmark), based on the same premium determination process as indicated above. The critical difference is that Trustmark has agreed to trade part of their profit margin for greater anticipated volume, lower administrative and distribution costs obtained through NAW’s member buying power, and the utilization of our managing general agent Flexible Benefit Service Corporation (Flex). At the end of the year, if all participating members’ claim activity was less than anticipated on a combined basis, all remaining claim dollars are placed in a Special Contingency Reserve (SCR) fund. The SCR fund is owned and controlled by the NAW Insurance Trust with the NAW Board of Directors serving as Trustees. At the end of the year, if all participating members’ claim activity was greater than anticipated on a combined basis, the SCR fund will offset the deficit, to the extent possible. Trustmark is responsible for covering any remaining deficit. As the SCR fund grows over time, it can also be used to reduce future insurance premium increases or may be distributed to participating members, within legal requirements, in a manner deemed appropriate by the Trustees. Getting Started Member companies may use their existing agent or select an NAW preferred agent. The agent and Flex work together to prepare an initial insurance premium quote based on the following factors: • SIC code • Location(s) of employer • Demograpics of employees • Plan design To learn more about the NAW Insurance Trust, visit www.naw.flexiblebenefit.com, call 1-866.472.5397 or e-mail [email protected]. 10 • THE NAHAD NEWS In addition, the following states will NOT have product available until further notice—HI, MD, VT Please check the “Product Availability” section of the NAW Insurance web site at www.naw.flexiblebenefit.com for the current rollout schedule. 2. All member companies—not just distributors—are eligible to participate. For a listing of NAW member associations, please go to www.naw.org/massoc. 3. Can I use my current health insurance agent? Yes. We will work with your current agent. You can have your agent or insurance administrator contact Flex for more information. 4. What if I don’t have a health insurance agent? We have an extensive network of NAW preferred agents across the country.
