About Me
Our Mission
• Enabling Engineering is a student group that applies
technology to build low-cost devices that improve the
lives of the elderly and disabled
• Empower affected individuals by giving them greater
independence, reducing medical errors, and
increasing social connectedness, at minimal cost
• We are all people with a passion for helping others
and empowering individuals with disabilities and
difficulties
Who We Are
• Various majors and varying technical skill level
• We have non engineering majors participating in
development of our projects
• Non engineers sometime give better insight into
providing engineering solutions
• Project based group
•
•
•
•
Primarily use meeting time to work on projects

How It All Began
• Common goals as Lifestream
• Capstone group collaborated with them to create
iCraft—an eye tracking robotic arm used to feed
quadriplegics
• Their engineering work permanently improved the
life of one person, why not do more!
• Enabling Engineering was the solution
• 60-100 students involved in club meetings
• 21 students volunteering as part of Civic Engagement
Program program
• 20 students in Enabling Engineering Class
• 6 partner organizations
• 11 professional mentors
• 6 student officers
• 1 academic advisor

Hospital Sleep Tracker
• Patients are often awoken several times per
night to be given medication, or flipped in bed
to prevent bed sores
• If you can predict time periods where patients
will be less disrupted, their quality of care
could be improved significantly
• Using an arduino and an accelerometer, we
have been able to track sleep motion and have
started to identify stages of sleep
Touchscreen Guard
• South Shore Educational Collaborative provides many
services to its special needs students including using
tablets for educational purposes
• Tablets are often used as communication/educational
devices
• Students often press wrong buttons
and exit important screens
• Project is working on designing
customized iPad case with
interchangeable covers to use with
various on screen apps
Large Lite Brite
• The Carter School in Boston works with middle and
high school students who cannot communicate
effectively
• Teachers want to encourage creativity
and environmental stimulation
• Ideal product is large Lite Brite set
with glass bulbs that light up when
put into place
User-operated Hoyer Lift
• Medical device to transfer patient
from one place to another
• End user wants to use device alone
without help
• Power will be provided by cordless
drill
• Was a capstone proposal in past
• Carter School

Wheelchair Umbrella
• Paraplegics and Quadriplegics
cannot hold an umbrella and control
their wheelchair at the same time
• Products exist to hold umbrellas on
wheelchairs but do not provide a
user friendly design or cover enough
area
• Build a custom umbrella to mount to
any wheelchair that can extend with
the press of a button
