SCISA Equestrian Rules
RULES OF COMPETITION:
IEA (Interscholastic Equestrian Association), USEF (United States Equestrian Federation), AQHA
(American Quarter Horse Association) along with any modifications from SCISA, are the official
rules.
PRACTICE:
Equestrian season is open under the same Summer restrictions and first practice dates as Fall
teams, but will continue into the Winter and Spring seasons. (May attend 2 camps in June or July,
and hold up to 12 team practices over the summer. Official team practices begin the first practice
day in August, mirroring all other Fall sports).
STYLES TO COMPETE:
Hunt Seat and Western
GENERAL RULES:
- Varsity teams: Eligible students in grades 6-12 may participate in Varsity Equestrian (Varsity Open
class will be limited to grades 9-12)
- Teams may be made up of any combination of male and/or female riders
STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS:
1. The Equestrian State Competition will be an "invitational”.
Requirements: 1) Riders that attend SCISA member schools which have an IEA equestrian team
must have shown in at least two IEA shows for their SCISA member school prior to the State
Championship to be eligible to compete and 2) be listed on the IEA Official Database roster for their
SCISA member school.
2. Riders that attend a SCISA member school which does not have an IEA equestrian team may
participate in the State Championship providing they 1) have shown in at least two IEA shows prior
to the State Championship, 2) be listed on the SCISA athletic roster by the member school’s Athletic
Director, and 3) be coached by a SCISA member school coach.
3. All eligible SCISA member schools with equestrian teams will be expected to assist the State
Championship Host Team with volunteers for the event.
4. Riders will use the draw format for horses based on their skill level and size by a process
overseen by a certified steward in accordance with IEA rules.
5. Schools/participants should coordinate with the Host Team for Hunt Seat and Western horses for
the event.
6. Apparel: Proper attire for this competition will be in accordance with IEA rules of competition and
will be published, in advance, outlining specifications for proper headgear, boots, etc.
7. Cost: Entry fees will be $50 per class
8. Riders will be assigned to a division based on their present division assignments at previous IEA
shows.* (see note on Rule 13 for the only exception to this rule)
9. A SCISA member school may be represented by sending a team of riders or individual riders (all
of whom have already competed in the required 2 IEA shows for their SCISA member school during
the current season) to the State Competition.
[If there is enough interest, schools that have not ridden in the IEA and been exposed to the
draw format (which will be used in the SCISA State Championships) may be offered another
day of competition on a separate day.)]
10. A team may allow unlimited entries into each class in Hunt Seat and Western.
11. A rider may compete in both Hunt Seat and Western, but may only compete in one division
in each of those styles.
12. Riders will receive points based on the IEA point system (1st: 7 points, 2nd: 5 points, 3rd: 4
points, 4th: 3 points, 5th: 2 point, 6th: 1 point). Only the highest placing team rider will be earning
points for the school team in a given class.
13. In order to accommodate schools who may only specialize in one style or another, Hunt
Seat riders will be allowed to cross over to ride Western, or vice-versa, in equal or lower
divisions (excluding reining and jumping). No rider will be allowed to compete in reining or
jumping unless they have done so in the required 2 IEA shows during the season.
*[A team with multiple riders in a division may choose to move a rider up one division to
compete for team points in the state championship. This decision to move the rider for this
competition will have no effect on the level that the rider is to compete for the next season with
IEA. (i.e. a team has 2 riders in the Intermediate division and no riders in the Open division they
may choose to move one rider to compete at this state competition in the Open Division.)]
14. A SCISA Western State Champion and SCISA Western State Reserve Champion Team; a
SCISA Hunt Seat State Champion and SCISA Hunt Seat State Reserve Champion will all be
crowned at the state championship event. Team championships will be based on a cumulative
total of points scored from 7 Hunt Seat classes and 6 Western classes in the competition.
15. FOR THE SAFETY AND CONSIDERATION OF ALL, NO DOGS PERMITTED ON THE
PREMISES DURING THE COMPETITION. PLEASE LEAVE YOUR DOGS AT HOME.
SPORTSMANSHIP:
All participants must adhere to the principles of good sportsmanship and the SCISA Code of
Conduct.

liable for an injury to or the death of a participant in an equine activity resulting from an inherent
