The recently opened Porsche-Museum in Zuffenhausen, at the entrance to the city of Stuttgart,
is exceptional in three respects: for its architecture, its construction and its urban design. In its
form, use of technology and dynamic elegance the design reflects the qualities of the traditional
automobile brand. A 160 metre long exhibition element rests on three concrete cores, which
enable the smooth structure to float with apparent ease above the level of the ground floor.
Upon entering the building the visitor is drawn onto a sunken entrance plateau, effortlessly
crossing the threshold between the everyday world and the white Porsche experience. The
graphic design concept of Mevis and Van Deursen enables the reader of this book to share with
the visitor the sense of moving through the museum. The photography of Ivan Baan guides him
visually around and through the building. While the first part of the book relies on pure black
and white photography the second part uses texts and plans to illuminate the technical and
constructional aspects of the project. This is a book for anyone interested in the architecture of
the Porsche-Museum. At the same time it is in itself an object crafted according to the same
principles.

The Second Edition of the Handbook of Neurochemistry, which was published about 24 years
ago, consisted of 10 volumes. The present, Third Edition, The Handbook of Neurochemistry and
Molecular Biology, is over twice as large; indicating a great expansion of neuroscience in the
past two decades. We now have not only more data on brain mechanisms relating to behavior
(mental activity and cognitive processes), but we understand in some detail the mechanisms of
these functions. The past editions focused purely on neurochemical aspects – the new edition
reflects the need of interdisciplinary approach for understanding neural mechanisms. Several
volumes deal with pathological changes and with repair and therapy of both mental and
neurological pathologies. The purpose of this edition is to provide an evaluation of the results of
investigations; to serve as a guide rather than enumerating all the available findings in detail –
it indicates future possibilities and the existing knowledge in neuroscience.
SELLING POINTS:
 The significance of understanding neural processes needs no emphasis – its potential is
primary in mental and neural pathology, but also in physiological importance
 The volumes should serve as an aid to researchers expanding our knowledge and to
educators training the next generation of neuroscientists and clinicians

Worldwide, there are an estimated 232,000 new cases of pancreatic cancer annually. In the
United States, it is the fourth leading cause of cancer death, and approximately 30,000 people
die of pancreatic cancer each year. The disease is difficult to diagnose in its early stages, and
most patients have incurable disease by the time they present with symptoms. The overall 5year survival rate for this disease is less than 5%.
Because of the recent and vast growth in both the clinical and scientific research being done in
pancreatic cancer, each researcher’s knowledge of other specialty areas outside his or her own is
now often quite limited. The aim of this book is to place these the tangible advances—those that
are indispensable to all working on pancreatic cancer—readily at hand. The book will focus on
advances that will not become dated, and the editors will choose authors who are the very best
in each area.
SELLING POINTS:
 The only Major Reference Work devoted entirely to pancreatic cancer
 The contributing authors to this book are the very best in their respective fields
 Will have widespread appeal among clinicians, pathologists, and basic scientists who are
now struggling to understand this complex and rapidly growing field

A careful basic theoretical and econometric analysis of the factors determining the real
exchange rates of Canada, the U.K., Japan, France and Germany with respect to the United
States is conducted. The resulting conclusion is that real exchange rates are almost entirely
determined by real factors relating to growth and technology such as oil and commodity prices,
international allocations of world investment across countries, and underlying terms of trade
changes. Unanticipated money supply shocks, calculated in five alternative ways have virtually
no effects. A Blanchard-Quah VAR analysis also indicates that the effects of real shocks
predominate over monetary shocks by a wide margin. The implications of these facts for the
conduct of monetary policy in countries outside the U.S. are then explored leading to the
conclusion that all countries, to avoid exchange rate overshooting, have tended to automatically
follow the same monetary policy as the United States..
SELLING POINTS:
 Real exchange rate determination and the workings of monetary policy of individual
countries in a world economy
 The history of world monetary policy is reviewed along with the determination of real
exchange rates within the Euro Area

Prebiotics are defined as nondigestible food ingredients that may beneficially affect the host by
selectively stimulating the growth and/or the activity of a limited number of bacteria in the
colon. Thus, to be effective, prebiotics must escape digestion in the upper gastrointestinal tract
and be used by a limited number of the microorganisms comprising the colonic microflora.
Prebiotics are principally oligosaccharides. They mainly stimulate the growth of bifidobacteria,
for which reason they are referred to as bifidogenic factors. Probiotics are defined as live
microorganisms, including Lactobacillus species, Bifidobacterium species and yeasts that may
beneficially affect the host upon ingestion by improving the balance of the intestinal microflora.
The dietary use of live microorganisms has a long history. Mention of cultured dairy products is
found in the Bible and the sacred books of Hinduism. Soured milks and cultured dairy products,
such as kefir, koumiss, leben and dahi, were often used therapeutically before the existence of
microorganisms was recognized. The use of microorganisms in food fermentation is one of the
oldest methods for producing and preserving food. Much of the world depends upon various
fermented foods that are staples in the diet.
SELLING POINTS:
 The science underpinning the probiotic and prebiotic effects, the latest in vivo studies, the
technological issues in the development and manufacture of these types of products, and the
regulatory issues involved
 Each volume is structured so that it covers all aspects of the topics in a logical manner,
avoiding replication

Natural Computing is the field of research that investigates both human-designed computing
inspired by nature and computing taking place in nature, i.e., it investigates models and
computational techniques inspired by nature and also it investigates phenomena taking place in
nature in terms of information processing.
Examples of the first strand of research covered by the handbook include neural computation
inspired by the functioning of the brain; evolutionary computation inspired by Darwinian
evolution of species; cellular automata inspired by intercellular communication; swarm
intelligence inspired by the behavior of groups of organisms; artificial immune systems inspired
by the natural immune system; artificial life systems inspired by the properties of natural life
in general; membrane computing inspired by the compartmentalized ways in which cells
process information; and amorphous computing inspired by morphogenesis. Other examples of
natural-computing paradigms are molecular computing and quantum computing, where the
goal is to replace traditional electronic hardware, e.g., by bioware in molecular computing.

For many applications, ranging from controls engineering to natural sciences and economics,
precise dynamic models must be derived. In the vast majority of applications, such precise
models cannot be derived by theoretical considerations only. The book discusses methods, which
allow the determination of dynamic models based on measurements taken at the process, which
is known as system identification or process identification respectively.
After a short introduction into the required methodology of continuous-time and discrete-time
linear systems, the focus is first on the identification of non-parametric models with continuoustime signals employing methods such as Fourier transform, measurement of the frequency
response and correlation analysis. Then, the parameter estimation for parametric models is
presented with a focus on the method of Least Squares, followed by some of its most prominent
modifications. Issues such as parameter estimation for time-variant processes, parameter
estimation in closed-loop, parameter estimation for differential equations, continuous time
processes and efficient implementations of the algorithms are discussed.
SELLING POINTS:
 The book presents different system identification methods, compares the different methods
and discusses their application issues
 Real experimental data are given on CD-ROM, allowing to test many of the methods
presented in the book with real measurements

For the past 50 years a select group of scientists has provided advice to the US President,
mostly out of the public eye, on issues ranging from the deployment of weapons to the launching
of rockets to the moon to the use of stem cells to cure disease. The role of the presidential
science adviser came under increasing scrutiny during the administration of George W. Bush,
which was highly criticized by many for its use (and some say, misuse) of science. This edited
volume includes, for the first time, the reflections of the presidential science advisers from
Donald Hornig who served under Lyndon B. Johnson, to John Marburger, the current science
adviser, on their roles within both government and the scientific community. It provides an
intimate glimpse into the inner workings of the White House, as well as the political realities of
providing advice on scientific matters to the presidential of the United States. The reflections of
the advisers are supplemented with critical analysis of the role of the science adviser by several
well-recognized science policy practitioners and experts.

"Water is life!" All active cellular systems require water as the medium and solvent of their
metabolic activities. Hydrophobic compounds and structures, which tend to exclude water,
though providing inter alia excellent sources of energy and a means of biological
compartmentalization, present problems of cellular handling, poor bioavailability and, in some
cases, toxicity. Microbes both synthesize and exploit a vast range of hydrophobic organics,
especially petroleum oil hydrocarbons and industrial pollutants, and the underlying
interactions not only have major consequences for the lifestyles of the microbes involved, but
also for biogeochemistry, climate change, environmental pollution, human health and a range of
biotechnological applications.
SELLING POINTS:
 First comprehensive overview of microbial interactions with the major forms of
hydrocarbons, oils, and lipids in or entering the biosphere
 A definitive resource of current knowledge on the diverse and multifaceted aspects of these
interactions, the microbial players, and the physiological mechanisms and adaptive
strategies characteristic of the microbial lifestyle that plays out at hydrophobic material:
aqueous liquid interfaces

The History and Development of Operations Research and Management Science will provide—
for the first time—a historical context for the entire field of Operations Research/Management
Science. This enables each researcher, student, and practitioner to put their own work (which is
only part of the broader OR/MS domain in the Applied Sciences) into a historical perspective.
Volume 1 provides a broad understanding including the OR/MS approach to problems, the scope
of problem-solving methodologies across the specific methodologies in the field and the modeling
advances with the appropriate mathematical tools illustrated. Volume 2 outlines the
development of the qualitative (non-mathematical) approach to OR/MS in the historical context
of the field. Volume 3 charts the development of the quantitative advances (progress) in
OR/MS. The volume uses the classical work of the pioneers to better understand the current
state-of-the-art in the quantitative school.
SELLING POINTS:
 OR/MS is a field with compartmental specializations and these volumes will be one of the
very few resources that will provide those who work with OR/MS tools and those who are in
interested in exploring the area, with the historical development of the entire field in
context of the problems it addresses and the tools it uses
 The field brings a "special synergy" to problem-solving methodologies that expands the
capabilities of the methods while developing solutions to even larger and more complex
problems

AVAILABLE (US): December 2009
The authors’ original motivation for the book was a one-semester course on network
optimization for senior masters’ level classes of econometrics and operations research. The
textbook is suitable for a ‘middle level’ course for a student of econometrics or operations
research interested not only in reading about network optimization theory, but also providing
first-hand experience in solving and analyzing reasonably sized programs with computer
software.
Networks in Action: Text and Computer Exercises in Network Optimization should spark
students’ interest in modeling problems as networks, to sensitize them to the fact that elegant
and effective solution methods are available once a problem gets modeled as a network, and to
guide them to use computer based software tools to solve these problems. Every chapter ends
with a brief description of additional exercises that are left unsolved in order to show students
that the problems covered in each of the chapters are not the only problems with which network
optimization deals.
SELLING POINTS:
 Presents optimization problems small enough to be solved in class yet too large to be solved
by eye
 Uses fictitious case study format for all exercises
 All exercises rigorously classroom-tested
MARKET: Advanced undergraduate students for courses on network optimization, masters
students for a first course on network optimization, focusing on practical problem
solving, MBA students as a basis for an elective course on network optimization.
Networks are used in many management disciplines such as: logistics, operations
management, finance, and marketing

This textbook is a completely revised, updated, and expanded English edition of the important
Analyse fonctionnelle (1983). In addition, it contains a wealth of problems and exercises (with
solutions) to guide the reader. Uniquely, this book presents in a coherent, concise and unified
way the main results from functional analysis together with the main results from the theory of
partial differential equations (PDEs). Although there are many books on functional analysis
and many on PDEs, this is the first to cover both of these closely connected topics. Since the
French book was first published, it has been translated into Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Korean,
Romanian, Greek and Chinese. The English edition makes a welcome addition to this list.
SELLING POINTS:
 Major textbook by a well-known and highly regarded author

This book gives a systematic treatment of real analytic automorphic forms on the upper half
plane for general confinite discrete subgroups. These automorphic forms are allowed to have
exponential growth at the cusps and singularities at other points as well. It is shown that the
Poincaré series and Eisenstein series occur in families of automorphic forms of this general
type. These families are meromorphic in the spectral parameter and the multiplier system
jointly. The general part of the book closes with a study of the singularities of these families.
The work is aimed primarily at mathematicians working on real analytic automorphic forms.
However, the book will also encourage readers at the graduate level (already versed in the
subject and in spectral theory of automorphic forms) to delve into the field more deeply.
SELLING POINTS:
 New material so far mostly available in articles only
 An introductory chapter explicates main ideas, and three concluding chapters are replete
with examples that clarify the general theory and results developed therefrom

The human brain is among the most complex systems known to mankind. Neuroscientists seek
to understand brain function through detailed analysis of neuronal excitability and synaptic
transmission. Only in the last few years has it become feasible to capture simultaneous
responses from large enough numbers of neurons to empirically test the theories of human
brain function. This volume bridges a vital gap between the mathematical sciences and
neuroscience research by bringing research areas from scientific and medical fields together.
This book is expository in nature and it will translate the technical languages into industries’
commonly-used terminology, which will make this volume even more beneficial to both
scientists and physicians.

This self-contained textbook gives a thorough exposition of multivariable calculus. It can be
viewed as a sequel to the one-variable calculus text, A Course in Calculus and Real Analysis,
published in the same series. The emphasis is on correlating general concepts and results of
multivariable calculus with their counterparts in one-variable calculus. For example, when the
general definition of the volume of a solid is given using triple integrals, the authors explain
why the shell and washer methods of one-variable calculus for computing the volume of a solid
of revolution must give the same answer. This book is distinguished from others on the subject:
it examines topics not typically covered, such as monotonicity, bimonotonicity, and convexity,
together with their relation to partial differentiation, cubature rules for approximate evaluation
of double integrals, and conditional as well as unconditional convergence of double series and
improper double integrals.
SELLING POINTS:
 Follows a highly organized structure, where each chapter includes sections, subsections,
notes and comments, and exercises
 Includes high quality exercises split into two parts: Part A consists of relatively routine
problems and Part B contains those that are either more theoretical or challenging

The book presents the solutions to two problems: the first is the construction of expanding
graphs – graphs which are of fundamental importance for communication networks and
computer science; the second is the Ruziewicz problem concerning the finitely additive invariant
measures on spheres. The author, who played an important role in these developments,
explains the two problems and their solutions from a perspective which reveals why all these
seemingly unrelated topics are so interconnected. The unified approach shows interrelations
between different branches of mathematics such as graph theory, measure theory, Riemannian
geometry, discrete subgroups of Lie groups, representation theory and analytic number theory.
Special efforts were made to make the book accessible to graduate students in mathematics and
computer science. A number of problems and suggestions for further research are presented.
"This exciting book marks the genesis of a new field. It is a field in which one passes back and

a charming combination of topics from group theory (finite and infinite), combinatorics, number
theory, harmonic analysis." Zentralblatt MATH

This book is concerned with cardinal number valued functions defined for any Boolean algebra.
Examples of such functions are independence, which assigns to each Boolean algebra the
supremum of the cardinalities of its free subalgebras, and cellularity, which gives the
supremum of cardinalities of sets of pairwise disjoint elements. The questions considered are
the behaviour of these functions under algebraic operations such as products, free products,
ultraproducts, and their relationships to one another.
Based on Cardinal Functions on Boolean Algebras (1990) by the same author, the present work
is nearly twice the size of the original work. It contains solutions to many of the open problems
which are discussed in greater detail than before. Among the new topics considered are
ultraproducts and Fedorchukís theorem, and there is a more complete treatment of the

The abstract branch of theoretical computer science known as Computation Theory typically
appears in undergraduate academic curricula in a form that obscures both the mathematical
concepts that are central to the various components of the theory and the relevance of the
theory to the typical student. This regrettable situation is due largely to the thematic tension
among three main competing principles for organizing the material in the course.
This book is motivated by the belief that a deep understanding of, and operational control over,
the few "big" mathematical ideas that underlie Computation Theory is the best way to enable
the typical student to assimilate the "big" ideas of Computation Theory into her daily
computational life.

Stochastic processes and diffusion theory are the mathematical underpinnings of many
scientific disciplines, including statistical physics, physical chemistry, molecular biophysics,
communications theory and many more. Many books, reviews and research articles have been
published on this topic, from the purely mathematical to the most practical.
This book offers an analytical approach to stochastic processes that are most common in the
physical and life sciences, as well as in optimal control and in the theory of filltering of signals
from noisy measurements. Its aim is to make probability theory in function space readily
accessible to scientists trained in the traditional methods of applied mathematics, such as
integral, ordinary, and partial differential equations and asymptotic methods, rather than in
probability and measure theory.
SELLING POINTS:

This book is divided into two parts. The first part is preliminary and consists of algebraic
number theory and the theory of semisimple algebras. There are two principal topics:
classification of quadratic forms and quadratic diophantine equations. The first topic is further
divided into two types of theories: classification over an algebraic number field and
classification over the ring of algebraic integers.
To ensure the book would be concise, the author proved basic theorems in local class field theory
only in some special cases, and the Hilbert reciprocity law only over the rational number field.
However, the author stated the main theorems with an arbitrary number field as the base field,
so the reader familiar with class field theory will be able to learn the arithmetic theory of
quadratic forms with no further references.
SELLING POINTS:
 Discusses algebraic number theory and the theory of semisimple algebras
 Discusses classification over an algebraic number field and classification over the ring of
algebraic integers
 Discusses local class field theory

The ability to identify systems in which only quantized output observations are available is
often extremely important in real-world situations. Due to sensor limitations, signal
quantization, or coding for communications, many older methodologies fall short in building
dynamic models from these observations. This work presents new methodologies that utilize
quantized information in system identification and explores their potential in extending control
capabilities for systems with limited sensor information or networked systems. The results of
these methodologies can be applied to systems and control design, communication and computer
networks, signal processing, sensor networks, mobile agents, data fusion, remote sensing,
telemedicine, and any field in which noise-corrupted quantized data need to be processed.
System Identification with Quantized Observations is an excellent resource for graduate
students, systems theorists, control engineers, applied mathematicians, as well as practitioners
who use identification algorithms in their work. Selected material from the book may be used in
graduate-level courses on system identification.
SELLING POINTS:

The purpose of this book is to demystify the evaluation and management of common
psychological disorders and psychosocial issues which impact all realms of medical and mental
health practice. These types of issues are often seen as "medical quicksand" by treating
professionals, employers, and insurers alike. Consequently, there is a system-wide avoidance of
these disorders that significantly increase medical and disability costs. However, there is a
considerable cost to individual and society as well in terms of the reduction in the quality of life
of the individual and the high costs associated with chronic use of medical resources.
It is essential to note the complexity of the psychiatric and psychosocial disability conundrum.
This dilemma is not limited solely to short-term, minor problems but leach into the full
spectrum of disability systems: private insurance, disability insurance, and federal programs for
disabled persons. This book will provide innovative tools to confidently navigate the disability
process by implementing, for the first time, true objective information coupled with the state-ofthe-art evidence-based research. Thus, all individuals involved in the psychiatric disability
process will be able to properly manage the process, optimize the treatment for an optimal
outcome and avoid iatrogenic disability. In particular, the book will provide a clear evidencebased guidance for the evaluation and treatment process not only for individuals with obvious
psychological problems, but for symptomatic individual with no discernable etiology or who
simply never seem to get well.
SELLING POINTS:
 Provides a link between treating professionals which incorporates this information into the
disability treatment and management process furnishing clinicians with the comprehensive
professional perspective that is lacking in the field.
 Includes description of authors’ pioneering study which utilized disability claims data to
identify concerns demonstrating the adverse effect of inaccurate diagnosis, inappropriate
treatment, and objectively unsupported disability leave.

The ability to interface patient monitors directly to a computer, and generate a clinical record
has existed for over 20 years. However, the acceptance of comprehensive electronic medical
records in anesthesia has been slow to develop. Experts anticipate this reluctance is changing
because of enhanced patient care through the use of detailed health information record systems.
Anesthesia Informatics provides the health informatician and administrator with a
comprehensive overview of this blossoming technology. With contributions from leaders in the
field, this user-friendly guide addresses how this technology has enhanced both the need for and
the ability to collect and apply data in an acute care setting. It also offers invaluable insight on
the business implications and the rationales required to make a purchase decision. Each section
outlines need to know information to help the reader with the implementation and utilization of
an Anesthesia Information Management System. Useful case scenarios focus on the ideal
components (anesthesia record, business rationale, communication, collaboration, and training)
of a fully automated record-keeping system.

The impact of illness on individual lives and society at large was once considered too vast to
gauge. More recently, quantitative measures of quality of life, life expectancy, and the financial
costs of illness and treatment are showing not only how this impact can be calculated but also
how the results can be used to further research and improve public health. The Handbook of
Disease Burdens and Quality of Life Measures is the first comprehensive reference to these
instruments and their findings on an international scale.
The Handbook features in-depth reviews of disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), qualityadjusted life years (QALYs), quality of life and financial measures for over 120 diseases and
conditions. Its editors have organized this critical information for maximum access and ease of
use, with abstracts, definitions of key terms, summary points, and dozens of figures and tables
that can enhance the text or stand alone. Readers may access data by country, region, or
population, or by disease entity.

This book covers all topics in mechanics from elementary Newtonian mechanics, the principles
of canonical mechanics and rigid body mechanics to relativistic mechanics and nonlinear
dynamics. It was among the first textbooks to include dynamical systems and deterministic
chaos in due detail. As compared to the two previous editions the present fifth edition is
updated and revised with more explanations and additional examples. Symmetries and
invariance principles, the basic geometric aspects of mechanics as well as elements of
continuum mechanics also play an important role. The book will enable the reader to develop
general principles from which equations of motion follow, to understand the importance of
canonical mechanics and of symmetries as a basis for quantum mechanics, and to get practice in
using general theoretical concepts and tools that are essential for all branches of physics.

This by now classic text provides an excellent introduction and survey to the continuously
expanding field of quantum chaos . The topics treated include a detailed exploration of the
quantum aspects of nonlinear dynamics, quantum criteria to distinguish regular and irregular
motion, antiunitary symmetries (generalized time reversal), random matrix theory and a
thorough account of the quantum mechanics of dissipative systems. In addition to a significant
number of smaller revisions and chapter updates, the third edition thoroughly expands on the
understanding of universal spectral fluctuations, and – to subsequently make the presentation
of all semi-classical developments self-contained - a new chapter on classical Hamiltonian chaos
has been inserted.

In recent years there has been a tremendous growth in psychology as a field of study and in the
number of students of clinical psychology in particular. The latter is partly due to the
proliferation of professional schools of psychology that are devoted to practitioner-oriented
degrees, rather than the traditional research-oriented course of study. Whatever school
students emerge from, however, they are obliged to demonstrate proficiency in providing clinical
services. This multi-volume handbook, is devoted to describing the core competency areas in
providing psychological services which is relevant to practitioners as well as clinical
researchers. As such, it covers assessment and conceptualization of cases, the application of
evidence-based methods, supervision, consultation, cross-cultural factors, and ethics.
The Handbook comprises three volumes with contributions by experts in each area. The goal is
to provide detailed descriptions of competence levels and describe the developmental trajectory
required to reach the highest of these levels.
SELLING POINTS:
 Outlines basic competencies for evidence-based practice
 Provides guidelines for competency modeling
 Comprehensive coverage of diagnosis assessment and treatment
 Contributors are recognized experts in their fields
 Systematic presentation of material allows for easy comparison across chapters

AVAILABLE (US): April 2010
This volume contains three studies that trace the history of tourism in Yellowstone National
Park through material remains discovered in both terrestrial and underwater archeological
sites. A research approach with an archeological foundation opens new avenues of inquiry not
available by using historical documents alone. Archeology gives voice to people otherwise
missing from written history, and therefore give us the broadest view of the past.
These chapters draw together the fascinating historical archeology of Yellowstone National
Park into a single volume linked by a common research framework, the archeology of tourism.
While oftentimes treated as separate and unrelated resources, historical archeological sites on
land, underwater, and in the liminal zone in between, connect in Yellowstone through a shared
history and a universal purpose. Situating these sites within the context of a larger tourist
infrastructure allows us to broaden our interpretation and enriches the stories the sites have to
tell.
SELLING POINTS:
 Provides new model for the study of National Parks
 Gives unique insight into the archaeological record of Yellowstone National Park
 Archaeology of Tourism techniques will be valuable in other contexts

Computational techniques based on simulation have now become an essential part of the
statistician's toolbox. It is thus crucial to provide statisticians with a practical understanding of
those methods, and there is no better way to develop intuition and skills for simulation than to
use simulation to solve statistical problems. Introducing Monte Carlo Methods with R covers the
main tools used in statistical simulation from a programmer's point of view, explaining the R
implementation of each simulation technique and providing the output for better understanding
and comparison. While this book constitutes a comprehensive treatment of simulation methods,
the theoretical justification of those methods has been considerably reduced, compared with
Robert and Casella (2004). Similarly, the more exploratory and less stable solutions are not
covered here.
SELLING POINTS:
 This book does not require a preliminary exposure to the R programming language or to
Monte Carlo methods
 All chapters include exercises and all R programs are available as an R package called
mcsm
 The programming parts are introduced progressively to be accessible to any reader

The randomized control clinical trial has become the gold standard scientific method for the
evaluation of pharmaceuticals, biologics, devices, procedures and diagnostic tests. This trial
design has been successfully used in both therapeutic and disease prevention trials. It is
superior to alternative designs by eliminating several sources of bias which exist in those
designs. This role has evolved over the past three decades in a number of disease areas
including cardiology, opthalmology, cancer and AIDS. While the specifics of using the
randomized control design for a specific intervention and disease may differ, the basic
fundamentals still apply in developing the study protocol and operational procedures. These
fundamentals include identifying the specific questions to be tested and appropriate outcome
measures, determining an adequate sample size, specifying the randomization procedure,
detailing the intervention with visit schedules for subject evaluation, establishing an interim
data and safety monitoring plan, detailing the final analysis plan and determining the
organizational structure.
