Martin Luther King Jr.
Day is January 16, 2017
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is an
American federal holiday marking
the birthday of Martin Luther King
Jr. King was the chief spokesman
for nonviolent activism in the Civil
Rights Movement, which
successfully protested racial
discrimination in federal and state
law. The campaign for a federal
holiday in King's honor began soon
after his assassination in 1968.
President Ronald Reagan signed the
holiday into law in 1983, and it was
first observed three years later.
New Year’s 2017
Happy New Year everyone! To
those of you who attended the
New Year’s Eve party, we hope
you enjoyed yourself. We are
looking forward to a great year
with many fun activities and
outings. We hope you will join
us. Most activities are held in the
Vista Activity Room & The
Azalea Dining Room.
January is ….
National Hobby Month
National Hobby Month
happens every January, just as
the new year starts. Everyone
has a hobby or interest, or
something they enjoy doing in
their leisure time. Open the
new year with this national
month celebration and see if
there's something else in the
world that might interest you.
Do you have a hobby you’d
like to share? Would you like
to see a club started? Please
see the activity staff with any
suggestions or ideas you may
have. We would love to hear
from you. We currently have
our puzzle club and there is a
jigsaw puzzle in the Vista
Room you can help work on.
We also have Garden Club
each Tuesday at 1:00.

We would like to extend a very
warm welcome to all our new
resident’s and their families. Should
you need any independent use
materials, the Wi-Fi password or
even just a tour around the building
to get familiar with where
everything is located, let us know.

Monthly Outing’s
Loteria
Do you enjoy going out to lunch,
the casino or the movies? Join us
each Wednesday for our weekly
outing. Please see activity staff
to sign up for the outing’s as it is
first come, first served until the
bus is full. If you are not able to
go out, you can review a menu
for that week’s outing and place
a to-go order with activity staff
that will be delivered upon
return.
Loteria has been played every
Thursday at 2:00 p.m. in the Azalea
Dining Room. If you’ve never
played, don’t worry. It is like Bingo
except it is played with picture
cards instead of numbers. The caller
will pull a card from the deck and
call out what it is in English and
Spanish. You place a chip on the
ones you have as they are called and
when you have 4 corners, a
diagonal line or horizontal, you call
out LOTERIA! It is a lot of fun. We
have received requests to play more
often. In response to this request,
you will now also see Loteria on the
calendar some Sunday afternoon’s
at 2:00p.m. each month. We will
continue to play in the Azalea
Dining Room.
National Puzzle Day
Celebrated every year on
January 29, the holiday honors
puzzles of all stripes - jigsaws,
riddles, science, math,
mechanical, and word puzzles,
and of course, real life puzzles.
Join us Sunday 1/29 in the Vista
Activity Room for table games
and jigsaw puzzle working at
2:00p.m.
Morse Code Day
Happy Birthday
First demonstrated on January
11, 1838 by Alfred Vail and
Samuel Morse, Morse code soon
became commonly used by the
military and the aviation industry
worldwide.
Happy Birthday to all our resident’s
and staff who celebrate birthday’s
in the month of January.
Join us in the Azalea Dining Room,
Friday January 13th, 2017 for
birthday cake, cold drinks and
music with Lanny Klein.
You don’t have to have a birthday
this month to join us, come and be a
part of the celebration.

"SOS", or "··· – – – ···" in
Morse code, was used to
communicate distress by ships
and naval vessels around the
world.
