2017 World University Games
I. SELECTION SYSTEM
The Men’s Delegation for the 2017 World University Games will be comprised of up to five
athletes. The competition format for allows for team competition using a five-man team
and/or for individual event competition in all-around and individual event sessions. The
dates of the 2017 World University Games are August 15th to 23rd. The games will be held
in Taipei, Chinese Taipei. The WUG Selection Committee will determine whether a full
team or individual event athletes will be selected to represent the United States based on
the number and perceived competitiveness of the individuals applying for consideration.
A. The World University Games Team will be selected as follows:
1. Athletes must be a United States citizen and eligible to compete on the 2017
World University Games Team.
Must meet World University Games eligibility requirements as established by
FISU. Only the following athletes may participate as competitors in the World
University Games:
a) United States Citizen and able to obtain a US Passport
b) Born between January 1, 1989 and December 31, 1999.
c) Have taken at least one 3-credit course towards a degree or
diploma within the last year before the GAMES. Incoming
freshman and transfers are usually eligible. The standard is that
the athlete must be “progressing towards a degree”.
2. Athletes must be among the up to five athletes and one alternate (nontraveling) who are selected by the World University Games Selection
Committee, which consists of:

3. Athletes who meet the qualifications outlined in A.1 must submit an application
for consideration for selection to the World University Games Team. The
application must include:
a. Completed application form (Exhibit B)
b. Completed financial responsibility form (Exhibit C)
c. Official results from one more of the following competitions:
• 2017 Winter Cup Challenge
• 2017 USA Gymnastics Collegiate Championships
• 2017 NCAA Championships
B. No injury petitions will be accepted
II. DISCRETIONARY SELECTIONS
The World University Games Selection Committee will consider the following factors
when selecting the up to five athletes who will participate in the World University
Games:
A. Team Selection: The selection committee will determine whether a full 5 man
team will be sent to the WUG based on identifying a team group from the list of
qualified applicants which would be perceived to be competitive within the field at
the World University Games based on an analysis of the 2015 World University
Games.
B. Individual Event Selection: In the event that a team will not be sent to the WUG,
the Selection Committee may determine to send an all around athlete(s) or
individual event competitors to the World University Games who are perceived to
be competitive for finals qualifications based on an analysis using the event noted
above.
C. Athletes will be evaluated against the benchmark scores outlined in A and B using
the results from the event noted in 1.A.3.
III. PETITIONS
No petitions directly onto the team will be considered by the Selection Committee.
IV. REPLACEMENT PROCEDURES
A. Removal
An athlete or coach may be removed from the World University Games team or
Coaches position if he violates the USA Gymnastics Code of Ethics (Exhibit A).
An athlete may be removed from the World University Games team in the event of
injury or illness that inhibits peak performance at the World University Games.
Verification of injury or illness may be made by two neutral doctors selected by
USA Gymnastics. Removal of an athlete or coach may only occur by action of the
President of USA Gymnastics after consultation with the chairman of the Men's
Program Committee, the World University Games Selection Committee, and an

interview with the athlete or coach. Any decision to remove an athlete or coach is
subject to review through USA Gymnastics' Grievance Procedures. In the event
an athlete or coach is removed from the World University Games team or
Coaches position, then an alternate shall be selected in accordance with the
procedures identified in I.A. Any decision to remove an athlete or coach may be
reviewed through the USA Gymnastics Grievance Procedures. An athlete who
may be removed from the team pursuant to this provision has the right to a
hearing per USA Gymnastics Bylaws (Article 10).
An athlete may be removed from the team at any time for violation of WADA, IF,
USADA and/or USOC anti-doping protocol, policies and procedures, as
applicable. In such instances, the adjudication process will be managed through
the United States Anti-Doping Agency.
B. Voluntary withdrawal from the team
An athlete or coach may voluntarily withdraw from the World University Games
team or Coaches position for any reason. Any decision by an athlete or coach to
withdraw voluntarily must be submitted in writing to the Senior Director of the
Men's Program at USA Gymnastics' national office. In the event an athlete or
coach voluntarily withdraws from the World University Games team or Coaches
position, then an alternate shall be selected in accordance with the procedures
identified in I.A.
V. PUBLICITY/DISTRIBUTION OF PROCEDURES
Publication of approved procedures will take place via the following distribution
channels:

VI. DATE OF NOMINATION
Athletes will be submitted for nomination to the 2017 World University Games Team no
later than April 24, 2017.

These procedures are based on IOC, FISU and/or FIG rules and regulations as
presently known and understood. Any change in the selection procedures caused by
a change in IOC, FISU and/or FIG rules and regulations will be distributed to the
affected athletes immediately. The selection criteria are based on the latest
information available to USA Gymnastics. However, the selections are always subject
to unforeseen, intervening circumstances, and realistically have not accounted for
every possible contingency.

These Selection Procedures have been reviewed and approved by USA Gymnastics.
Each athlete and coach participating in the process for selecting the team as outlined in
these Selection Procedures has carefully reviewed and understands the terms of these
Procedures. That understanding is reflected by the signature of the athlete and coach on

In consideration for the permission to participate in this competition, I agree to be bound by each of the following
paragraphs:
I.
WAIVER AND RELEASE
I agree that USA Gymnastics and the sponsor of this event, along with the employees, agents, officers, and
directors of both organizations (hereinafter referred to as “USAG” and “Sponsor”) shall not be liable for any
injuries, damages, or losses sustained by me which are in anyway related to my participation in this competition
and which may be attributable to the negligence of USAG or the Sponsor. I am fully aware of the risks, including
potential personal injuries, damages and losses, associated with participation in a gymnastics competition; and I
assume all risks and accept full responsibility for any injuries, damages, losses
which I may incur in connection with my decision to exercise my permission to participate in this competition. I
agree for myself, my estate, my executor, my heirs, and my assigns, (a) not to file any suit or initiate any claim
procedure against USAG or Sponsor in connection with any injuries, damages, or losses arising directly or
indirectly out of my participation in this competition and (b) to fully and forever release and discharge USAG and
Sponsor from any and all claims, demands, damages, rights of action, or causes of action in any way connected
with this competition.
II. READINESS TO COMPETE
I am both physically and psychologically prepared to participate in this competition. I have been instructed by my
coaches in the proper method to perform each of the exercises I will attempt in this competition; I have practiced
those exercises; and I have performed those exercises in the past without suffering injury.
III. ELIGIBILITY
I have read the Eligibility Code of USA Gymnastics and, to the best of my knowledge, I am an amateur gymnast
as defined by that code. During this competition, I will not knowingly violate any provision of the Eligibility Code.
To the extent I remain eligible to compete in high school and college gymnastics, I represent that I have cleared
my participation in this competition with the appropriate high school or collegiate athletic association.
IV. PUBLICITY RIGHTS
In the event that USA Gymnastics records this event (the “Event”), in exchange for my participation in the Event, I
(or if I am under 18 years of age, my parent/guardian) grants USA Gymnastics permission to record, use and edit
my name, voice, photograph, image, likeness, performance and any and all biographical information submitted by
me. USA Gymnastics may reproduce, create derivative works, distribute, publicly perform and display and sell
said recording in any all formats or media, whether now known or yet to be discovered or developed, as well as
use said recording in advertising, marketing or promoting USA Gymnastics or its events and programs. USA
Gymnastics may not use my performance for the express or implied endorsement of any third party’s products or
services. All permissions granted by me shall be irrevocable and effective in perpetuity and throughout the world,
and apply to USA Gymnastics and its assigns, contractors, sub-licensees, distributors, successors, and agents. I
have read and understand this release, and it is binding upon me and my heirs, legal representatives and assigns.

EXHIBIT C
Financial Responsibility Form
All expenses associated with participation at the World University Games, in accordance with
Selection Procedures, are to be borne by the participants. Therefore, the anticipated
expenses for the delegation members include:
v Air Travel – delegation members will be scheduled to travel by meeting in one city in the
US and travel to Belgrade together. Delegation members will also be required to provide
USA Gymnastics with a credit card number to cover both the domestic and international
flight expense.
v Village Housing, Meals, Competition Fees and local transportation: $1815.00 per athlete
v Competition and training apparel: Approximately $300 per athlete
v Judges, coaches and trainers Fee: Approximately $1500.00 per athlete
v Approximate Total Cost: $3615.00 per athlete – not including airfare
The National Gymnastics Foundation has provided a 10,000.00 grant toward international
relationships which will be used to defray costs associated with the World University Games.
In addition, some NCAA institutions may cover some or all of the expenses associated with
their student athlete traveling to the World University Games. Any expenses not covered
through the Foundation Grant or NCAA institution support will be divided equally among the
five participating team members.
Following the conclusion of the World University Games, a final accounting will be made of all
costs associated with the WUG and a final billing for any expenses beyond the paid amount
will be sent to the participants. USA Gymnastics has made every attempt to make an
accurate assessment of the expenses, but cannot accurately predict the actual costs.
