Bryan Adams High School “Striving For Excellence” 2015-2016 Bell Schedule Tenacious Collaborative Reflective Rationale for Bryan Adams’ Modified Block Schedule: 1. ● ● A modified block schedule with a built-in advisory/leadership period is needed to support Bryan Adams' transformation to a Leadership Academy for the following reasons: 90-minute class periods allow for deeper engagement with course content and support student completion of Performance Assessments, a critical component of our Leadership Academy model. Weekly C-days during which students attend all of their classes for 45 minutes support retention of learning and prevent scenarios in which long stretches of time pass between A-day or B-day class meetings. 2. A built-in 30-minute advisory/leadership period is needed to support two chief aims: ● Going forward, a once-weekly leadership period during BA Block supports our students as they construct their portfolios of Performance Assessments and prepare for oral defenses of their learning and leadership development. Additionally, a BA Block leadership period allows for consistent, campus wide roll-out of the B.A. SIX leadership values that form the core of our Leadership Academy model. ● BA Block periods utilized for Response-to-Intervention support our efforts to reach struggling students during the traditional school day without affecting their academic progress in other classes. Additionally, students who are on-track for meeting course and graduation requirements will have expanded opportunities to participate in academic clubs and competitions that are traditionally relegated to extracurricular meetings. ● Courses that will be removed from periods 1-8 and offered during the BA Block: Leadership, Math Applications, SCIRD, Newspaper. How do I know what my schedule will be for the other BA blocks during the week? Teachers will be able to provide input regarding what clubs, sports and other activities they might want to assist with. Teachers and students who do not want to participate in any of these activities will be assigned to a “study hall” during that time. 2. Why are the class periods out of order on Mondays? Students have lunch during 3rd/7th on block days, so rather than have a new lunch to remember for C days, they will continue to have lunch during 3rd period on C day. The schedule also ensures that students with early release (4th/8th) will not have a free period during the day. 3. How do we determine what to schedule students into during BA Block time? Students will be scheduled based on a priority list of activities, but the highest priority will be for intervention/remediation for students not on track for graduation. 2101 Millmar Drive Dallas, TX 75228 Phone: (972) 502-4900 • Fax (972) 502-4901
