I AM the Light of the world Materials needed: Blindfold, chairs. Game: Choose one of the young people to be blindfolded and one of the younger young people to direct them. Have the blindfolded person stand at the opposite end of the room and create a simple obstacle course for them to travel through e.g. between two chairs, under a table. The younger child has to direct the blindfolded child using only verbal instructions to help them. Ask the blindfolded person, ‘What does it feel like to walk around when you can’t see?’. Thought: “When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’” John 8:12 (NIV) Walking in the dark, when you cannot see where you are going, can be quite scary. Sometimes we can do this in life; we do things aimlessly and don’t really know where we are going. In John 8, Jesus tells us that he is the light of the world and that people who follow him do not need to walk around in the dark. Instead they can walk in the light, knowing the right way to live and the right path to follow. Small Group questions: • • • • • Are you afraid of the dark? What happens when you turn on a light switch in a dark room? Is it easy to walk around when it’s dark? What does Jesus mean when he says he is the ‘light of the world’? What do you think it’s like to walk in the light as a Christian? Prayer: Thank Jesus for being the light of the world and not letting us go through our lives in the dark. Thank God for sending his son, Jesus, so that we can know the right way to live and the right path to follow.
