In the new maths curriculum, Year 1 children are expected to ‘know’ these number facts by the end of Year
1. This means knowing it in their heads without needing to work out the answers using their fingers.
Knowing these number facts at speed provides a solid foundation and helps them to work with bigger
numbers later.
e.g. If you know that 3 + 4 = 7, then you can work that 7 -3 = 4 and 30 + 40 = 70
If you know 8 – 5 = 3, then you can work out that 5 + 3 = 8 and 80 – 50 = 30

Winner is the person who gets rid of all their dominoes and with the highest number of points.
Subtraction number facts – same as above but subtract the lowest number of spots on one half of
the domino from the highest number of spots on the other half of the domino.
Playing cards – 2 players

Addition and subtraction number facts – (take out the king and queen and make the Jack 10) cut
the pack of cards into 2 halves, each player has one half of the cards each. Players take in turn to
turn over 2 cards at a time – alternate between adding and subtracting the 2 numbers.
E.g. turn over 3 and 7 --- 3 + 7 or 7 – 3
On each round, decide if the winner will be the person with the highest total or the lowest total.
Collect points to decide on the overall winner.

Number bonds to 10 or 20 – (take out the king and queen and make the Jack 10) place 10 cards up
on the table. Take in turns to select 2 cards that make totals to 10 e.g. 2 and 8, 4 and 6, 5 and 5.
When run out of cards to make new number bonds, turn over a card from the pile and put on the
table. Continue until all number bonds to 10 have been made. Winner is the first person to make
all number bonds to 10. Play the game with other number bonds. N.B – this game could also be
played with doubles and halves.
