The Journal also strives to function as an integral element in the process of education at the University of Kentucky College of Law. In service to the students at the College of Law, the Journal provides training in legal research, writing, and editing. The Journal aspires to afford students an opportunity for collaboration and, by publishing student works, the Journal functions as a forum for student ideas and activism. Type of Grant: Senate Special Project Grant Sponsoring Senator: Gabby Torres Event/Project: Election Law Symposium Location: University of Kentucky College of Law Date: 42391 Time: 8:30AM to 5:00PM Purpose of Event/Project: Every year the Kentucky Law Journal organizes a symposium to bring together leading scholars to speak about relevant topics in the law. The topic of this year's symposium is Election Law. We picked this topic because it is highly relevant as we are in the midst of an election year. Furthermore, election law affects every potential voter. Thus it has a broad appeal to more than just lawyers and scholars. The symposium is a way for University of Kentucky students, as well as the Lexington community as a whole, to learn about important issues in election law that affect the upcoming elections. (See the following page for more details) Name of Org: ACM Members in Org: 40 Contact: Dean Crockett Email: [email protected] Phone: 5028218087 Purpose of Org: Our ACM chapter is dedicated to cultivating and expanding a culture for computer science (CS) students at the university. We accomplish this through several student-run events throughout the year, which bring together the CS community on campus to network, teach, and learn together. Type of Grant: Senate Special Project ($2,500--Must Have A Sponsoring Senator) Sponsoring Senator: Angelo Stekardis Event/Project: ACM room renovations Location: Engineering Annex Date: November Time: Not Applicable Purpose of Event/Project: The ACM operates out of a study room which we have been provided by the University. Our room is located in the Engineering Annex. Over the summer, we received funding to partially renovate our room, which had fallen into a state of disrepair over the course of several years. Although we accomplished significant cosmetic improvements, the room's amenities remain insufficient for the constant daily use of our students. The funds we are requesting from the student council would allow us to finish these renovations, and outfit our organization to grow to its fullest potential. Total Cost: 2450 Org funds used: We have received $2,000 from the college of engineering student council to be used for our annual programming competition, CatHacks. We have also collected $600 in dues from our members. These funds will be held throughout the school year as a security deposit for the room. Detailed Description of Request: • (1) Office Printer $250 The ACM is currently using a printer with a broken LCD panel. This is an inkjet printer unfit for office use, and the lack of a display makes printing any document incredibly difficult and timeexhaustive. The Brother MFC-J5720DW is a sufficient office-level printer at $250 MSRP. • (10) Desk chairs $750 The ACM is currently using 8 worn, mismatched chairs salvaged from a storage room in the Engineering Annex. 6 of the chairs sit low to the ground, have hard plastic arm rests, stiff back support and no adjustable height. The other 2 chairs are leather desk chairs, but are much older, and have rips and tears in the leather. None of these chairs are ideal, and we would like to replace them completely with a set of Amazon Basics mid-back desk chairs, priced at $75 each. • (2) Work Station computers $800 The ACM is the study center of choice for most of our members. Our room is occupied nearly 24/7 with members working on programming assignments, personal projects, etc. For many students, the laptop they use for class isn’t powerful enough to handle work such as editing and design. Consequently, many students have brought their personal workstations into the room, and we would like none of members to have to do this. For $800, we would be able to build 2 workstations with ample power to meet our member’s needs. We have calculated this budget around the most cost-effective parts currently on the market. • (2) Raspberry Pi 2’s $70 The Raspberry Pi is an invaluable resource to electrical engineering students. This is a low-cost, versatile, re-programmable Arduino circuit board. These allow students to learn and practice circuit logic, input and output, and how to program software for tangible, interactive hardware. In the past, our members have used their own Raspberry Pi’s to create a fully functional arcade machine, and a laser projector that is now being funded as a University research project. We would like 2 Raspberry Pi’s for our members to experiment with, and make their own projects. • (4) Logitech K400 wireless keyboards $100 When working with circuit boards external input is often required, and our members often need to bring their personal keyboards from home just to continue what they’re working on. We would like 4 basic wireless keyboards for our member’s general multipurpose use. • (4) Wireless mice $100 As covered above, our room is currently ill-equipped for the needs of our member’s projects. We would like to request 4 wireless computer mice for our members’ general multipurpose use. • (5) Surge protector $75 The ACM uses surge protectors at the majority of our events, to power computers, screens, speakers, etc. An investment in additional surge protectors would be essential this year, as we grow in members, and as our events grow in participation. We have found several options for suitable surge protectors online, at ~$15 each. • (1) Apple TV $150 The Apple TV has an open software development kit that is easy to comprehend and utilize for beginning programmers. Several of our members have expressed interest in developing software applications for this device, and we believe this could turn into an excellent community project. Software development for the Apple TV would also be an ideal project for programming competitions and hackathons, such as our annual CatHacks competition. Having an Apple TV in our inventory would be a valuable extracurricular resource for our members. • (1) Nest Security Camera $200 With the new additions to our room including several devices of considerable value, the ACM student government has expressed a small concern security. We believe it would be forwardthinking to invest in a security camera, to protect our inventory moving forward as our organization expands. Additionally, it would do well for the peace-of-mind of our members to know that their possessions are safe in the room without the need of constant surveillance. Funding would allow the Media Depot club the ability to refine the equipment currently in our inventory and equip us with the resources to film these events next semester. Resources acquired through funding will be available for any student club member to use on personal video projects Total Cost: 2499.57 Org funds used: There is currently no funds committed by the Media Depot Club.
