An activity by Street Law, Inc. Career Bingo Objective To introduce students to different legal careers and a variety of pathways to the legal profession. 30 minutes Number of participants This activity works well with 45 students or fewer. You’ll want to have about one legal professional for every 4-6 students. Procedures Before the Activity Create a brief survey for your volunteer legal professionals (a sample is provided). Send them the survey before the event and ask them to get it back to you within a week. Use the survey to create a Legal Professional Bingo Card (sample available on the following pages). Be sure to use a variety of facts that will prompt students to ask questions like: “What do you do?” or “What did you study in college?” Choose a prize format: either every student who completes the card can receive a prize, or the students who complete it and note the most additional information about the professionals can receive a prize, etc. Avoid offering a prize for speed, since that would discourage in-depth conversations between students and professionals. Encourage professionals to spend some time talking with the students and expanding on the fact listed on the card, rather than simply signing the box. © 2012 Street Law, Inc. Career Bingo The Activity 1. Begin by telling the students about the importance of networking and meeting people who have achieved the same career goals they hope to. 2. Tell students that the legal professionals in the room have taken a variety of paths to their current job, that they have years of experience, have come from many places, and have a lot of information to share with the students. 3. Tell the students that, as a way to get to know each other, they'll meet people while playing a game. 4. Distribute Bingo Cards and have students mingle with professionals, finding the right people to sign the right boxes. Note: Another format for this activity would require the students to find answers to questions. For example, rather than finding someone who attended a certain college, they might have to find three people's opinions on the best major to prepare for law school. © 2012 Street Law, Inc. 2 Legal Careers Survey Thank you for agreeing to participate in our Street Law activity! Your participation will help the students learn about the variety of legal careers available, and the different ways people get to the legal profession. To help students interact with the professionals, we’re going to play a bingo game. They will have to circulate, asking questions to find the right people to fill in their bingo card. Please answer these questions so we may put clues about you on the card. Please return this to ___________________________ by _________________________. 1. Where did you grow up? 2.
