deal.Atthattimewehadlivedinidenticalhomes,distinguishableonly
bythecolouroftheFormicaonthekitchenunits.Iwasnevertolivein
anythingsospaciousagain.He,inanythingsocompact.AsachildI
identifiedthedifference.Hisfatherkeptquietabouthisaffairs.
Isuspectthatourchildishfriendship,althoughintenseinasharing
gobsmackertypeofway,wouldhavepeteredoutexceptthatwemet
again,agedtwelve,atacountytennistournament.Joshrecognizedthat
knowingagirl,anygirl,wouldimprovehisstandingatStowe.Iwas
