2. Research Report
All the participants are required to complete a research report. The format for the
written work is 12-point font, double spaced, Times New Roman, and 1-inch margins.
The report should be a minimum of 8 pages and a maximum of 20 pages.
Suggested Structure for Independent Research and Problem-Solving:
1) Research Background:
Participants choosing this category are required to conduct a background research
of the problem first. You can go through questions such as: What is the cause of the
problem? How long has the problem been existed? What kind of trouble is it
bringing to the community? Previous attempts to solve this problem, if there are
any.
2) Approach:
On the second stage, the participants are encouraged to come up with a solution. It
could be an invention, improvement or proposal. You are encouraged to conduct
experiment, survey (questionnaire, interview etc.), or case study to test the
functionality of the product. All the research design and involving techniques should

be described in this part. When you encounter any difficulties while implementing
your research, try to utilize the resources from the Internet, local libraries and
schools. You can contact your advisor for help as well.
3) Results and Analysis:
The last stage is to write up the report. Display the results of your experiments and
surveys, provide interpretation of these data here.
4) Discussion and Conclusion:
Describe the advantage and limitation of your project, as well as give suggestions for
the future study in this part.
Suggested Structure for Community Service and Volunteer work:
1) Background Research:
Participants choosing this category will follow the similar procedures to finish the
report. First, the participants are required to conduct a background research to
study the community service they have chosen to do. The following questions are
suggested to be answered: What has caused this social issue to happen? How long
has the problem been existed? What are the main organizations and their attempts
to solve this problem?
2) Your plan and schedule to finish the community service or volunteer work:
Indicate the organization, location, length of time, schedule and other related
information of your work in this part.
3) Your takeaway and reflection of your own experience:
After the finishing the service, you are required to talk about your own reflection of
the experience, including what they have seen and learned from the service.
4) Conclusion and suggestion for the future study:
The last step is to write the conclusion of the research and suggestions for the future
study. The content here should echo with the problem you have mentioned in the
previous parts. For example, if the association you are working for doesn’t have
enough volunteers, you can make a plan for them to seek help and launch campaign
in the international student community if they haven’t targeted at this group of
people before. If possible, the participants are highly encouraged to follow up with
the organizations and carry out their suggestions. Additional award will be given to
the participants who continue to work on the issue addressed in the report.
