Quarterly Coalition Meeting Date: January 27, 2015 Members Present: Claudia Davenport, Debbie Weinstein, Molly Carrillo-Walker, Sgt. Isabel Savala, Randall Day, Tom Goodman, Lowell Kindschy, Karen Bowker, Bruce Porter, Hilda Navarro Guests: John Crowell, Diseily De La Cruz, Ashley Diaz Staff: Mary Conway, Justin Wilkins, Jennifer Cabrera, Dean Palius, Ryan Keene, Opened Meeting: 3:36 p.m. and introduced guests and new Coalition members. Minutes: Minutes of September meeting approved, as read. (Motion – Goodman, Second – Day) ACTION MINUTES A. Presentation – Youth Action Council Members 1. Youth presenters Deseily De La Cruz and Ashley Diaz provided a power point presentation which summarized the mission and activities of the Youth Action Council at the high school 2. Open discussion with questions followed. Deseily and Ashley noted the following: o Bullying happens occasionally on the campus; there is a positive reputation of the club on the campus; there are twelve students in the Youth Action Council; if they could change anything on campus, it would the bullying, name-calling, and general rudeness of students. o Possible need for more leadership training in order to do more advocacy 3. Bruce suggested that Cheryl and Hector challenge the kids to come up with some ways that the adults of the Coalition could support the Youth Action Council. 4. It was noted that having the youth at regular quarterly meetings is important. Action Item #1 #2 Description Mary will follow-up with Cheryl and Hector on how the Coalition could support the Youth Action Council. Mary will see that a YAC youth is at the next quarterly meeting. B. Executive Committee Report 1. Nomination for membership – Coalition members voted to invite John Crowell, YMCA Director of Teens and Sports, to join the Coalition. (Motion – Carrillo-Walker, Second – Goodman) 2. Nominations for Chair and Vice-Chair o Members voted Bruce Porter to continue as Chair (Motion - Weinstein, Second – Goodman ) o Members voted Molly Carrillo-Walker as the Vice-Chair (Motion - Day, Second – Palius) 3. Member of the Year – Members selections were made and collected. Results will be emailed. 1 4. Members voted to approve the changes to by-laws (Motion – Day, Second – Goodman) 5. Meeting calendar and presentations o Ideas for presentations: Dr. George Patterson is interested in presenting about marijuana; Pro/con debate/discussion about legalizing marijuana, and the medical ramifications; State regulations on e-cigarettes; Feedback from AlcoholEdu (ideally presented at September meeting); CHKS data presentation in June; 6. Media Workgroup o Mary was hoping to recruit Mike Boggess, and Liz Crump to join Media group. Action Item #3 #4 Description Mary will seek more nominations for member of the year and will tally results and email selection to members. All Coalition members will consider individuals that could be part of our Media Work Group and send suggestions to Mary. C. Agency Announcements/Share 1. Bruce Porter shared that the Boy Scouts are looking for new county leader. 2. Lowell Kindschy is working on the LoveFest event, a Christian-based event on sexuality. All teens are welcome to come, but spots are filling up quickly. 3. Karen Bowker is looking forward to participating more in the year ahead. 4. John Crowell is currently focusing on the basketball season at the YMCA right now. He is also the Youth and Government advisor and will be taking 25 teens to participate in a Mock Legislature and Court Program in Sacramento in February. 5. Tom Goodman is interested in getting kids to volunteer at Humane Society. He was concerned that Fig Mountain Brewery in Los Olivos served his 20-year old son. 6. Randall Day shared that he would like to take a more active role in the Coalition. He felt the Annual Planning Meeting went well and was very positive and enjoyable. 7. Sgt. Isabel Savala is partnered with us and Camarillo Coalitions, helps with parent programs 8. Molly Carrillo Walker has been with the Coalition since 2008; her time is primarily spent with school board functions at the College School District. She felt that the Annual Planning Meeting provided an opportunity for a good general discussion about where we are and where we are going; the process went well. 9. Debbie Weinstein is now part-time at Buellton Medical Center, part-time at Juvenile Hall, and recently joined Doctors Without Walls to serve the homeless in Santa Barbara. Debbie shared that deaths from prescription drug abuse are decreasing. Also shared that the Annual Planning Meeting was fabulous and productive. 10. Ryan Keene was introduced as the Coalition’s part-time Prevention Educator, currently teaching Lifeskills to the Jr. High students at Los Olivos. Ryan shared some anonymous questions submitted by middle-schoolers to give members insight as to the questions that are on these students minds. 11. Claudia Davenport is working with the Solvang School Kindness Club (GEN K) two times a week. 12. Hilda Navarro is focusing on helping Hispanic parents learn more about prevention. 2 D. Review of Member Survey 1. Time did not allow for this presentation. Action Item #5 Description Mary will email the summary of the Coalition Member Survey to Coalition Members.
