
Tips for Being an Excellent
Climbing Crew Leader
SMILE
 Be a positive Role Model by your language & modest attire (loose fitting
T-Shirts, 3 inch inseam on shorts & no spaghetti strap shirts or exposed
midriff
 Turn OFF your cell phone & focus on your kids
 Call each person by name
 Circle Up during Mountain Treats & discussion in Kid Vid Cinema
 Get to know your Crew Members
 Keep Children Safe – never leave them alone
 When you hear the Bible Point of the day shout “HOLD ON!”
What you will do Before
Opening Celebration
 Arrive by 8:30 sign in with the Crew Leader Coordinator
(GeJuan), Sherpas & other crew leaders for prayer &
announcements in Chamberlin Hall
 Locate your Crew Backpack, blanket & registration list
noting kids with allergies
 At 8:45 move into the Base Camp Sing & Play, greet
kids & gather your Crew, making sure the kids know
each others’ names & wear their nametags.
Crisis Management
 Stay calm
 Follow protocol
 Keep a calm face & voice
 Don’t respond with emotion (anger, fear, frustration)
 One Crew Leader should remove other kids from the
incident & keep them distracted while the other Crew
Leader de-escalates the situation
Protocol (Steps to Follow)
1. Injury: contact Sherpa who will contact GeJuan (Crew Leader
Coordinator)who will seek Emergency Help as needed (911)
2. Allergic Reaction: as above. GeJuan will decide if child with
Epipen will self administer. Epipen will be stored at First Aid
Station (under Big Tent)
3. Behavior Problems: Separate the rest of the group, respond
gently but firmly. Ask other Crew Leader to contact Sherpa &
GeJuan if needed.
4. Unexplained Issues/Missing Child: Don’t panic & assume the
worst. Calmly contact Sherpa using code word.
What you will do next
Base Camp Sing & Play (Sanctuary): PARTICIPATE! WORSHIP!
 Assign Jobs for the day within your Crew
 Check your Schedule & collect your Tribe, Backpack & Blanket and
move to next activity quickly – there is only 5 minutes in between
Bible Expeditions (Chamberlin Hall): Sit with your Crew, encourage
them to listen & participate
Glacier Games (Field): Encourage them to listen to instructions and YOU
participate in the games
Imagination Station (Tent): Encourage kids to listen to instructions &
assist them with their activity, ensuring that they label their take home
gadget with their names & collect them in the Crew Backpack.
Mountain Top Treats: Help kids collect their snack & return to your Crew
Blanket.
 The first day help the “Prayer Person” in your Crew to thank God for their snack.

If they need to use the bathroom, take the whole group, never just one kid. If
you need to take only a few, ask another Crew Leader to watch your remaining
kids, maybe some of their kids have to use the bathroom.
 If you have extra time, introduce the idea of a “God Sighting” and help students
learn Bible Verse of the Day
Kid Vid Cinema (Sanctuary):
 A leader will reinforce the Bible Point of the day & Crews will have time to work
on their Bible Memory Verse & earn their Bible Buddy Tag of the day. Help each
kid put their tag on their necklace the station leader says to do so.
 Beginning on Day 2, help each kid complete a “God Sighting” sticker for each
kid to place on giant poster each day.
What is a God Sighting, you
ask?
 God guided & provided to his people
long ago but we can still see God at
work today in our lives. We see the
blessings of health, clean water to drink,
a kind word from someone or something
beautiful or unexpected in nature.
 Our God Sightings remind us that we
are on a journey through life, even when
we face tough things like loneliness, a
new school or sickness. God is still
around us. When we take the time to
see what God is doing it helps us trust
God every step of the way!
