Sight Word or Letter Name/Sound Games for Kids • Board Games Choose your favorite board game. Before you can spin or roll the dice you must read a sight word or say the name of a letter. • BINGO Another great game that exposes a child to sight words in a fun and entertaining way. Please let your teacher know if you would like additional cards or resources. Card Games Card games offer repetition, which is a key component when developing a sight word vocabulary. Ideally you should review previously taught words on a daily basis. Playing card games allow you to select specific sight words and gradually add new ones as appropriate. You will need two copies of sight words or letter cards. I will copy two sets and glue them on cards. Printing on card stock is even easier. (Cardstock for printers can be found at most places that sell office supplies). Please let me know if you need these resources. • Concentration Playing concentration has never been more fun! A card game can be played with 2 or more players and the number of sight words/letter cards can vary depending upon each players reading readiness. Choose 6-12 sight words/letters. For each you will need two cards for each word or letter. Mix up the pile. Turn face down. Take turns turning over two cards at a time. Read the word or name each letter as you turn the card over. If the cards match, the player gets to keep the cards. If the cards don’t match, player must return them to their spot face down. • Mighty Maid Playing card games has never been so educational. This card game is played similar to old maid but we’ve incorporate sight words or letters. You will need to make an old maid card as well. • Pairs This card game is played like Go Fish. Using sight words, a player must obtain two cards containing the same sight word, or a pair. This is a great game that can be used to review previously learned sight words or to introduce new ones.
