ِ ِب ْس ِم ه الر ِح ِيم الر ْح َٰم ِن ه اَّلل ه Tazkiyah Series MCMC LECTURE #11 DR ISLAM ELFAYOUMI 6/3/15 Summary of Week 1 Defined Tazkiyah Purification (At-Tatheer) Increase (Az-Ziyaadah) Discussed its importance Allah swore 11 times in surat As-Shams: “Indeed, successful will be the one who purifies it.” The duaa of Ibrahim: Allah responded by emphasizing tazkiyah Discussed what we need for tazkiyah Revelation (Wahy) Role Model (Uswah) Guidance (Huda) Parts of the Human Being Soul (Ruh) Body (Nafs) Mind (Aql) Heart (Qalb) Summary of Week 2 Out hearts dictate our success Signs of a diseased heart can be objectively observed Signs of a healthy heart can be objectively observed There are two disease states Doubt in Allah (Shakk) Loving your own worldly desires (Hubbush-shahawaat) There are two healthy states Being certain of Allah (Yaqeen) Loving Allah (Hubbullaah) Three negative forces Nafs, Devils, Lack of Knowledge Summary Week 3 Nafs vs Shaytaan Two negative forces preventing tazkiyah Shaytaan lies and our desires pressure us to accept those lies Nafs is much stronger and is the main driver of disease (if not tamed) Knowledge Lack of knowledge is the third negative force Without knowledge tazkiyah cannot be performed Knowledge of Shaytaan’s traps and how to avoid them Knowledge of nafs’ desires and how to restrain them Doubt occurs in the articles of Iman Allah Angels Books Messengers Last Day Qadar (good and bad) Summary Week 4 Yaqeen (certainty) is to believe in a matter so securely that it is not sent back to the mind to be discussed anew – i.e. perfect knowledge that leads to unwavering action 1. 2. 3. Ilmul Yaqeen - Obtained through reason Aynul Yaqeen - Obtained through reason + senses Haqqul Yaqeen – Obtained through immersion/all faculties Summary of Week 5 Signs of Yaqeen Reda (contentment) vs Sakhat Reda is patience without wishing for the trial to go away based on your knowledge of Allah as the most merciful, most wise, most loving, etc. coupled with your understanding that the real life is in Paradise, iA. The pain that you experience is muffled by the joy of knowing that it is Allah who has chosen this for you, and he only wants what is best for you. This is highly recommended but not waajib. Sabr is waajib – patience while wishing for the trial to go away (with good words). Sakhat (Anger or Hatred) Sakhat is anger or hatred towards Allah and his decree. This is a major sign of a diseased heart full of doubt. Surat Al-Fajr Ayahs 15-16 (also see Surat Al-Hajj Ayahs 11-13) As for man whenever his Lord tests him by honoring him and blessing him he says: My Lord honors me But whenever He tests him by tightening his means, he says: My Lord despises me Summary of Week 6 Khushoo’ (Humility) Al-khudoo’ liman tara annahu fawqaka bila munaazi’ To humble yourself and be modest towards one you see as above you/more powerful than you without any rivals. To know that Allah truly has all the power and you are weak – and all things good and bad come from him. You need him and he doesn’t need you Ayah: Innamaa yakhshallaha min ibaadihil ulamaa’ The ones who have khushoo are the ones with knowledge Ibn Abbass (RA) said: Knowledge that Allah has power over all things You cannot escape from Allah therefore you must submit Summary Week 7 Kibr (Arrogance) Opposite of Khushoo – major sign of a diseased heart full of doubt Batarul Haqq wa Ghamtun-naas (Hadith in Muslim) – rejecting the truth after it is known and looking down on the people Punishment for Kibr You will not see the signs of Allah in this world (that raise iman) You will be punished in this world You will not enter jennah until your kibr it is burned out Shaytaan’s main characteristic The one who possesses it follows the sunnah of Shaytaan Performance in Salaah is the measuring stick The one who possesses it follows the sunnah of Shaytaan Summary of Week 8 Khushoo in the prayer The first thing to be lost from the ummah Objective sign of yaqeen Importance of Khushoo Examples of Khushoo Levels of Khushoo in the Prayer How to Maintain Khushoo in the prayer Summary of Week 9 Tawakkul is one of the fruits of yaqeen When the heart confidently relies/depends upon Allah for gaining benefit and avoiding harm in this world and the next Yaqeen in divine destiny is critical to proper tawakkul Allah has power over all things; he creates and controls all things; everything is subjugated to him; nothing happens without his will; he not only knows everything that will happen but he is the one who creates and measures every cause, every effect, every circumstance. Human beings have free will by the permission of Allah, but they have no real power. That is why we are judged by intention and good action is tawfeeq from Allah. Knowledge of this gives the mu’min strength and frees him from anxiety, hopelessness, and arrogance Tawakkul vs Tawaakul Summary of Week 10 Shukr of the tongue: Praising and thanking Allah publicly But as for the favor of your Lord, report [it]. (Ad-Duha:11) Shukr of the heart: Recognizing and confessing the blessing of Allah O mankind, remember the favor of Allah upon you. Is there any creator other than Allah who provides for you from the heaven and earth? There is no deity except Him, so how are you deluded? (Fatir:3) Shukr of the limbs: Using the gifts of Allah to please him They made for him what he willed of elevated chambers, statues, bowls like reservoirs, and stationary kettles. [We said], "Work, O family of David, in gratitude." And few of My servants are grateful. (Saba:13) Benefits of Shukr Sign of Iman – shukr is the opposite of kufr in the quran Said one who had knowledge from the Scripture, "I will bring it to you before your glance returns to you." And when [Solomon] saw it placed before him, he said, "This is from the favor of my Lord to test me whether I will be grateful or ungrateful. And whoever is grateful - his gratitude is only for [the benefit of] himself. And whoever is ungrateful - then indeed, my Lord is Free of need and Generous.“ (An-naml:40) َّ ََّ ِ َولَقَ ْد آُ َ ْينَا لُ ْق َماََ ْال ِح ْك َمةَ أ َ َِ ا ْش ُك ْر ِ ََّّللِ ۚ َو َمن َي ْش ُك ْر فَإِنَّ َما َي ْش ُك ُر ِلنَ ْف ِس ِإ َ َو َمن َكفَ َر فَإ ٌي َح ِميد ٌّ اَّللَ َغ ِن And We had certainly given Luqman wisdom [and said], "Be grateful to Allah ." And whoever is grateful is grateful for [the benefit of] himself. And whoever denies [His favor] - then indeed, Allah is Free of need and Praiseworthy. (Luqman:12) Benefits of Shukr (cont) The pleasure of Allah َّ ََّ ََِِ َُ ْكفُ ُروا فَإ َ َاَّلل ضإُ لَ ُك ْم َ ض َى ِل ِعبَا ِد ِه ْال ُك ْف َر َ َو ََِ ُ َ ْش ُك ُروا يَ ْر َ عن ُك ْم َ َو َ يَ ْر َ ي ٌّ ِغن If you disbelieve - indeed, Allah is Free from need of you. And He does not approve for His servants disbelief. And if you are grateful, He approves it for you (Az-zumar:7) Safety from the punishment َّ ََش َك ْرُ ُ ْم َوآ َمنت ُ ْم ۚ َو َكا َّ َّما يَ ْف َع ُل ع ِلي ًما َ ََِ اَّللُ بِ َعذَابِ ُك ْم َ اَّللُ شَا ِك ًرا What would Allah do with your punishment if you are grateful and believe? And ever is Allah Appreciative and Knowing. (An-Nisaa:147) Benefits of Shukr (cont) More blessings in the dunia from Allah ٌ شدِيد َ َعذَابِي ل َ َوَِ ْذ َََُّذَََّ َربُّ ُك ْم لَئِن َ ََّ َِ ش َك ْرُ ُ ْم َل َ ِزيدَنَّ ُك ْم َ َولَئِن َكفَ ْرُ ُ ْم And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.' " Scholars say: An-ni’am wahshiyyah, fa qayyidoohaa bish-shukr • Blessings are like wild animals trying to escape, so tie them down with shukr Al-Hasan Al-basri used to say: Innallaaha layumatti’ bin-nimati maa shaa’; fa ithaa lam yushkar alayhaa qallabahaa athaaban; • Allah allows his servant to enjoy His blessings for as long as he wills; when the servant stops making shukr he will turn the blessing into a punishment That is why they used to call shukr – “Al-haafith and Al-jaalib” or “The protector the procurer” • Yahfathu an-ni’am al mawjoodah – it protects the blessings that are present • Yajlib an-ni’am al-mafqoodah – it brings the blessings that are missing Benefits of Shukr (cont) Great reward in the hereafter اب َ َو َما َكاََ ِلنَ ْف ٍس أََ ُ َ ُم ِ َّ َِ ۖت َِ َّ ِبإِ ْذ َ َۖ َ اب الدُّ ْنيَا نُْْ ُِ ِإ ِم ْن َها َو َمن يُ ِر ْد ث َ َۖ َ اَّلل ِكتَابًا ُّم َْ َّج ًًل ۗ َو َمن يُ ِر ْد ث َّ سن َْج ِزي ال َشا ِك ِرين َ ْاْل ِخ َرةِ نُْْ ُِ ِإ ِم ْن َها ۚ َو And it is not [possible] for one to die except by permission of Allah at a decree determined. And whoever desires the reward of this world - We will give him thereof; and whoever desires the reward of the Hereafter - We will give him thereof. And we will reward the grateful (Ali-Imran:145) How to become Shaakir/Shakoor Learn to appreciate people Hadith: Laa yashkurullaaha man laa yashkurunnaas Ayahs about thanking parents Hadith: If someone does something good for you, reward them. If you cannot reward them, then make duaa for them until you feel that you have rewarded them enough. Hadith: Whoever gets something nice from someone, he should return the favor. If he cannot, then he should speak of that favor. If he remains silent then he has made kufr. Hadith: If someone does something nice for you, saying “Jazaakallaahu khairan” is excellent praise/thanks. Thinking about the things Allah has given you Wa ja’ala lakumus-sama’ wal absaara wal af’idata la’allakum tashkuroon One day a man came to complain to a wise muslim who said to him – wil lyou give me your eyes for 100,000 dirham? How about you hands? How about your feet? You are a wealthy man but you are complaining about small things. Surat Ad-Duhaa By the morning brightness And [by] the night when it covers with darkness, Your Lord has not taken leave of you, nor has He detested [you] And the Hereafter is better for you than the first [life] And your Lord is going to give you, and you will be satisfied. Did He not find you an orphan and give [you] refuge? And He found you lost and guided [you] And He found you poor and made [you] self-sufficient. So as for the orphan, do not oppress [him] And as for the petitioner, do not repel [him] But as for the favor of your Lord, report [it] Examine the miraculous construction of the surah The entire quran is miraculous on so many levels Tazkiyah Road Map White Board Diagram Thikr Prophet in a constant state of thikr Every experience he had made him think of Allah Thikr is greater than the acts of worship Salat Siyam Hajj Jumuah Those with diseased hearts do not make thikr Hypocrites Thikr Best kind of Thikr The thikr of Muhammad (asw) He had a rich life His heart was the most connected to Allah What came off his tongue was exactly the experience Allah wanted us to have Therefore the full religious experience can be found in his thikr Hadith: Laa yazaalu lisaanuka ratban bi thikrillah Examples Thunder New Moon Sleep Wake Lack of Thikr Ghaafileen Allah will forget you Shaytaan will have access to your heart Miserable life full of anxiety and depression Benefits of Thikr Serenity Wealth Protection Affairs organized Dunia and Akhirah benefits
