COMMENTARY
The Rugby Championship has been in existence for four years.
Over this period, there have been two constants


The domination of the tournament by New Zealand, and
The challenge to Argentina in a competition that comprises three of the highest four teams in the IRB rankings.
In this year’s competition, there were changes. Australia headed the table, New Zealand lost one game to Australia
and finished second while Argentina won a match for the second year running, beating South Africa.
Despite their one defeat however, New Zealand continue to dominate the event. The following table shows that over
the four year period, New Zealand


won 18 of 21 matches
won 14 of those 18 matches by 10 or more points
were the best attacking team scoring 30 per cent more tries than their nearest rival

With Rugby World Cup being played in 2015, an exercise was undertaken comparing the shape of the game between
the two major annual rugby competitions, 6 Nations and The Rugby Championship. The following table shows the
profiles of each competition.
It shows that 35 per cent more tries were scored in The Rugby Championship. If the exceptional last round matches
are excluded from the 6 Nations comparative figure, the Rugby Championship averaged almost the double a number
of tries per game. There were no noticeable differences in the other areas of the game.
