Dear NSWKA associated club,
On behalf of the Sydney University Kendo Club, I would like to invite you to our
competition “USYD Cup: Kendo for a Cause” this year once again. This annual competition
will be hosted by our club for all NSWKA associated clubs, and all profits raised from the
competition will be donated to charity.
The event will be held at the University of Sydney Aquatic Centre on the 14th of July.
Similar to last year, we will be having a “kachi-nuki (winner stays on)” style to give a
different flavour to other competitions. This year however, we will be separating Dan and
Kyu grades.
The organisation that will be donated to this year has been decided to be the Heart
Foundation. Unlike last year, where the donation was made to the earthquake victims in
Japan, we have decided to support charity organisations within Australia.
I hope that you are able to make it to our competition, it will be a fantastic day of Kendo for a
good cause. We very much look forward to hearing from you, please do not hesitate to
contact us if you have any issues regarding our competition.

Competition rules
USYD Cup 2012 will be played under “kachi-nuki (winner stays on)” style. Competition will be split
in two divisions of Kyu and Dan, with five members per team.

Each club is allowed to enter a maximum of three teams each in Kyu and Dan competitions
(maximum of six teams per club for the entire competition)

Each player can only represent one club, i.e. no mixing of club members.

Five players per team, minimum of 4 players. Exceptions may be made: For example, in the
case when there are eight members, then it can be discussed to have two teams of four.

Jodan, tsuki, and nito are not permitted in the Kyu grade competition

Matches will be three minutes, with a two minute encho in the case of a draw.
Kachi-nuki specific rules

At the end of encho and the score is a tie, then BOTH players will move off the court, and the
next player will move on. The only exception is the team captain/taisho (See next point)

The taisho can only be knocked out by losing a match. For example: If the taisho draws with
the chuken (#3) of the other team, then he/she will move on to play the fukusho (#4) of that
team.

For each match, teams are allowed to change the order of their players.
