490,701 System‐wide visits were 2.6% lower in Q1 2017 compared to Q1 2016, with an increase of 1.7% at Central Library and a decrease of 4.4% at branches, compared to an overall 7.5% decline in Q4 2016, when lower level meeting rooms at Central Library were closed due to the September flood. Most branches had traffic within 10% of 2016 levels, while Britannia and West Point Grey increased by 17.6% and 14.8% respectively, and South Hill declined by 11.6%. 1

Use of library materials including physical items, digital downloads and other digital use decreased by 1.8% in Q1 2017 compared to Q1 2016. Downloadable eBooks and eAudio continued to increase at a rate of 18.8% and other digital use increased at a rate of 29.3%. Circulation of physical items declined by 6.6% in this quarter, including “other” items not illustrated in the chart above. 129,073 1.47% Sessions on computers with Internet system‐wide declined 1.4% in Q1 2017, with branch use down 2% and Central Library down 0.51%, while minutes used increased by 1.6%. At most branches, sessions used varied within 10% of 2016 levels, however, Collingwood (‐19.1%) and Dunbar (‐12.8%) saw larger declines. WiFi use increased by 0.55% system‐wide, with a decrease of 2.1% in branches and an increase of 1.47% at Central Library. Carnegie (‐62%), Kerrisdale (‐55.6%) and Terry Salman (‐16.8%), saw significant declines as a result of availability of the City’s free WiFi. Attendance increased from 7,119 to 7,496, due to three programs with very high attendance in March 2017: Club Day, a social connection event organized by VPL to connect residents with people and organizations that share their interests (400 attendees); EG Fest, an engineering and geoscience fair held in the promenade (467 attendees); and a YWCA Vancouver Job Fair (2,000 attendees) in the promenade and Lower Level meeting rooms. In branches, VPL offered 429 programs, compared to 479 in the same quarter of 2016. There were 4,557 attendees, compared to 8,535 in Q1 2016, due to programs at several branches with very high attendance in February and March 2016. Adult Programs: Central Library

VPL offered 20 programs for teens at Central Library in Q1 2017, compared to 36 in Q1 2016. Attendance was 312 in Q1 2017, compared to 425 in 2016. In branches, VPL offered 191 programs for teens in Q1 2017, compared to 112 in Q1 2016. Attendance was 3,200 in Q1 2017, compared to 1,518 in 2016.
