COURSE DESCRIPTION: Advanced Math is a two semester course and is a
prerequisite to calculus. Algebra 2 with a suggested grade of B or higher is a
prerequisite to advanced math. Topics covered include: Circular functions, periodic
functions, identities, graphing, applied trigonometry, complex numbers, trigonometric
inverses, conic sections, curve sketching, matrices, functions, coordinate geometry,
logarithms, and advanced algebra concepts.
Semester 1
Chapter 1: Linear Relations And Functions
Chapter 2: Systems Of Linear Equations And Inequalities
Chapter 3: The Nature Of Graphs
Chapter 4: Polynomial And Rational Functions
Chapter 5: The Trigonometric Functions
Semester 2
Chapter 6: Graphing Trigonometric Functions
Chapter 7: Trigonometric Identities and Equations
Chapter 8: Vectors and Parametric Equations
Chapter 9: Polar Coordinates and Complex Numbers
Chapter 11: Exponential and Logarithmic Functions
COURSE MATERIALS:
Required: Advanced Mathematical Concepts; Glencoe ©2001
Required:
TI-84 Plus Graphing calculator will be provided.
Graphing calculators may be used for daily class work, quizzes, and tests.
INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS: Each class period will begin with a question and
answer session. This will be followed by lecture/discussion over the new material.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
HOMEWORK: Each section of the text that is covered in class is accompanied by
homework problems. Students are expected to do the homework problems to enhance
their skills on the topic, but homework will not always be handed in or graded. Before
attempting homework problems, it is suggested that the student read the
accompanying material in the textbook. Homework assignments that are collected will
be worth 10 points each. Assignments that are not collected will be worth 5 points for
completion. (The student may request that these non-collected assignments be checked
by the teacher.)
TESTS: Tests will be given at natural breaking points in topics. Each test will be worth
100 points.
SEMESTER TESTS: A semester test will be given at the end of each semester. It will
be worth 15% of the semester grade.
GRADING SCALE:
93-100 = A
85-92 = B
77-84 = C
70-76 = D
0-69 = F
Miscellaneous:
Unexcused late assignments are not acceptable. Unless told otherwise, assignments are
due at the beginning of class the next time the class meets. If your assignment is not
complete, you are still required to hand in something, even if it is a blank paper with
your name and assignment on it. (If you don’t hand in anything you will receive a zero
for that grade with no option to make it up.) You then have the option of coming in
after school that day or before school the following school day to do or complete the
assignment in my presence. Your grade on these late assignments will be lowered by
25%. (Example: If you get 80% correct on the paper you will get a grade of 75% of
80% which is 60%.)
If failing a chapter test causes your quarter grade average to drop below 77% you may
retake the chapter test for a maximum grade of 80%. This cannot be done during class
time, and must be done prior to completion of the following chapter. Test retakes will
not be given to individual students whose quarter average is above 76%. On rare
occasions a chapter retake will be given to an entire class on a specified date and
during the regular class time. In the event that a student scores lower on the retake
than on the first test, the higher score will go in the grade book.
If you fail a chapter test and are then failing the quarter you may retake the chapter
test for a maximum grade of 80%. This cannot be done during class time, and must be
done prior to completion of the following chapter.
