Swim Lesson Level Descriptions - City of Jerseyville Parks and

 Offered to children from the ages of 9 months to 3.5 year old and parent.
 Parent/adult accompaniment in the water is required.
 If the child is not potty trained, then a swim diaper is also required.
 The infant will learn skills such as:









Water adjustment
Exploring the pool
Front kick
Prone glide
Underwater exploration
Back float
Arm movement (prone position)
Rolling over
Water exiting
 The toddler will learn the same skills as the infants plus several more including:




Back gliding
Arm movement on back
Changing positions
Kick up to surface
 The parents will learn holding positions and when to use them, the importance of cues
and how to use them, and roles for helping the child learn and practice skills appropriate
for his or hers age.
 Must be 3.5 years old
 Water Adjustment:
 Fully submerge face for 3 seconds.
 Buoyancy and Breath Control:
 Experience Buoyancy-bounce up and down in chest deep water, maintaining an
upright position for 10 bounces.
 Water Entry and Exit:
 Enter and exit water independently using a ladder, ramp steps or side of pooldemonstrate
 Locomotion:
 Move through water comfortably-walk 5 yards in chest deep water, maintaining
balance.
 Supported kick on front and back – demonstrate
 Introduction to alternating arm action- walk 5 yards in chest deep water,
alternating arms.
 Personal Safety and Rescue:
 Learn basic water safety rules – importance of safety
 Familiarity with getting help – demonstrate
 Reaching assists without equipment – demonstrate
 Release cramp- demonstrate
 Wear life jacket – demonstrate
 Must have previous water experience
 Water Adjustment:
 Hold breath and fully submerge head for 3 seconds
 Retrieve object – submerge and retrieve object in chest deep water
 Orientation to deep water – explore deep water with support.
 Buoyancy and Breath Control:
 Prone float or glide unsupported and recovery – 5 seconds
 Supine float or glide unsupported and recovery – 5 seconds
 Leveling off from a vertical position – demonstrate
 Rhythmic breathing with or without support – bob 10 times
 Water Entry and Exit:
 Step from side into chest deep water and recover to a vertical position –
demonstrate
 Get out at side of pool – demonstrate
 Locomotion:
 Flutter kick on front and back – demonstrate
 Finning on back – demonstrate
 Back crawl on arm action – demonstrate
 Combined stroke back, using kick and choice of arm movement- 5 yards
 Turns:
 Turning over, front to back – demonstrate
 Turning over, back to front – demonstrate
 Personal Safety and Rescue:
 Float in life jacket for 1 min with face out of water
 Perform reaching and extension assist from deck – demonstrate
 Perform reaching and extension from deck – demonstrate
 Assist no- swimmer to feet – demonstrate
 Become familiar with rescue breathing – water demonstrate
 Water Adjustment:
 Retrieve object, eyes open without support – from bottom of pool in chest deep
water
 Buoyancy and breath Control:
 Bob, Submerge head completely- 15 times
 Bob in water slightly over head to travel to safety
 Water Entry and Exit:
 Jump into deep water from side of pool – demonstrate
 Dive from side of pool in compact position
 Locomotion:
 Prone glide and Supine glide with push off – 2 body lengths
 Coordinate arm stroke for front crawl with breathing
 Coordinate back crawl
 Elementary backstroke
 Turns:
 Reverse direction while swimming on front and on back
 Personal Safety and Rescue:
 Learn safe diving rules – discussion
 Tread water – demonstrate
 Jump into water with life jacket
 H.E.L.P. position – demonstrate 1 minute
 Open airway for rescue breathing
 Must have completed prior water classes through Level 3
 Buoyancy and Breath Control:
 Deep – water bobbing – demonstrate
 Experiment with buoyancy ad floating position- demonstrate
 Rotary breathing- demonstrate in chest deep water
 Water Entry and Exit:
 Modified dive from side of pool – standing front dive
 Locomotion:
 Elementary backstroke
 Sculling on back – 5 yards
 Front crawl – 25 yards
 Back crawl – kick 10 yards
 Sidestroke – kick 10 yards
 Turns:
 Introduction to turning at wall – demonstrate change of direction at wall
 Personal Safety and Rescue:
 Tread water with variety of kicks – 2 minutes
 Learn rescue breathing – demonstrate fundamentals
 Become familiar with CPR – watch demonstration
 Must have completed prior water classes through Level 4
 Breath Control Submerging:
 Tuck surface dive - demonstrate, submerging completely
 Pike surface dive - demonstrate, submerging completely
 Shallow-angle dive from side – demonstrate
 Water Entry and Exit:
 Glide two body lengths and begin any front stroke – demonstrate
 Locomotion:
 Tread water - 5 minutes
 Front Crawl - 50 yards
 Breaststroke - 25 yards
 Butterfly - 25 yards
 Elementary Backstroke - 50 yards
 Back Crawl - 25 yards
 Sidestroke - 25 yards
 Turns:
 Front flip turn while swimming – demonstrate
 Backstroke flip turn while swimming - demonstrate
 Personal Safety and Rescue:
 How to call for help and the importance of knowing first aid and CPR discuss/demonstrate
 Reach or throw, do not go - discuss/demonstrate
 Look before you leap - discuss/demonstrate
 Must have completed prior water classes through Level 5
 Strokes:
 Front crawl- 100 yards
 Elementary backstroke - 100 yards
 Back crawl- 50 yards
 Breaststroke - 50 yards
 Sidestroke - 50 yards
 Butterfly - 50 yards
 Turns:
 Front crawl open turn - demonstrate
 Backstroke open turn - demonstrate
 Front flip turn - demonstrate
 Backstroke flip turn - demonstrate
 Sidestroke turn - demonstrate
 Breaststroke turn - demonstrate
 Diving:
 Surface dive -demonstrate
 Kneeling position - demonstrate
 Standing dive - demonstrate
 One-part take off (deck & diving board) - demonstrate
 Two-part take off (deck & diving board) - demonstrate
 Tuck Dive (deck & diving board) - demonstrate
 Pike Dive (deck & diving board) - demonstrate
 Treading:
