CE COURSE Blood Conservation and Hemostatic Agents and Sealants Saturday, August 3, 2013 Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation (CAMLS) 124 South Franklin Street, Tampa, Florida A Continuing Education Activity Sponsored By Overview This course will provide an overview of the risks associated with blood transfusions and rationale for minimizing the use of transfusions. The focus will be on hemostatic agents and sealants to reduce patient bleeding during surgery. It is critical that nurses understand the uses and application of topical agents in order to use them appropriately. The presentations will cover blood conservation, the use and application of hemostatic agents and sealants. Each participant will be given the opportunity to observe the application in an inanimate hands-on laboratory setting. Open discussion and simulated questions will also emphasize the appropriate use. Objectives Upon completing this educational activity, the nurse should be able to: 1.Discuss the rationale and need for blood conservation during surgical procedures. 2.Explain options for blood conservation. 3.Differentiate the classes of topical surgical hemostats, sealants and adhesives, including their composition, mechanism of action and the clinical differences that exist between products. 4.Describe indications, contraindications, appropriate selection and correct application techniques to ensure safe and efficacious use. 5.Demonstrate in a hands-on laboratory setting on porcine models the mechanism of action of various agents and sealants. Target Audience This course is limited to perioperative nurses with decision making and advisory positions who are involved with surgical procedures that require blood conservation and the use of hemostatic agents and sealants. Accreditation State Board Approval Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number CEP14944, for 4.0 contact hours. Obtaining full credit for this offering depends upon attendance, regardless of circumstances, from beginning to end. Licensees must provide their license numbers for record keeping purposes. The certificate of course completion issued at the conclusion of this course must be retained in the participant’s records for at least four (4) years as proof of attendance.
