Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation (CAMLS)
124 South Franklin Street, Tampa, Florida
A Continuing Education Activity

Overview
This course will provide an overview of the risks associated with blood transfusions and rationale
for minimizing the use of transfusions. The focus will be on hemostatic agents and sealants
to reduce patient bleeding during surgery. It is critical that nurses understand the uses and
application of topical agents in order to use them appropriately. The presentations will cover blood
conservation, the use and application of hemostatic agents and sealants. Each participant will be
given the opportunity to observe the application in an inanimate hands-on laboratory setting. Open
discussion and simulated questions will also emphasize the appropriate use.
Objectives
Upon completing this educational activity, the nurse should be able to:
1.Discuss the rationale and need for blood conservation during surgical procedures.
2.Explain options for blood conservation.
3.Differentiate the classes of topical surgical hemostats, sealants and adhesives, including their
composition, mechanism of action and the clinical differences that exist between products.
4.Describe indications, contraindications, appropriate selection and correct application
techniques to ensure safe and efficacious use.
5.Demonstrate in a hands-on laboratory setting on porcine models the mechanism of action of
various agents and sealants.
Target Audience
This course is limited to perioperative nurses with decision making and advisory positions who are
involved with surgical procedures that require blood conservation and the use of hemostatic agents
and sealants.
