Boys
Male players born in 2006 and older will be playing in the new city-wide Junior Selects boys program
and are welcome to register on-line at http://www.saskatoonselects.ca/. Boys born in 2007 and
younger continue to register with their Community Association, or with the Hustlers zone if
Community registration is unavailable.
Hustler Tournament
Every year the Hustler Zone hosts a tournament the between the last week and first weekend in June.
This is a fundraiser for our zone it is very important that all players and parents support it. Any
available parent and player (if your team is entered or not) should keep the weekend open to help
out with this tournament. This tournament supports the whole zone to keep our registration fees at a
reasonable level. All Hustler Teams, with the exception of the Division A Girls teams, are expected to
play in the tournament. The Division A Girls teams are expected to assist with the tournament if they
are not at an out-of-town tournament. More information will follow once we get closer to the date.
The manager of each team will be the team contact for the Tournament Committee.
Try-Out Process
All players are required to try out as part of the SMSL (Saskatoon Minor Softball League) bylaws.
Those players that do not get evaluated may be placed on a Division B, C or Open team. Please
refer to the website for tryout dates and times.
Players will be assigned a tryout number. This number needs to put on the back and front of your
shirt for tryouts (most players use tape to make numbers). You will be asked to attend 2-4 try-out
sessions where a set of 3-5 evaluators will evaluate player skill level. Players will be evaluated on
batting, fielding groundballs and fly balls, infield throws, outfield (longer) throws, speed, agility, and
effort. Pitchers and Catchers will be evaluated separately. Pitchers will be evaluated on mechanics,
control, velocity, spins, and potential. Catchers will be evaluated on throw accuracy, throw
velocity, glove control and catching, effort, and potential. Pitchers and catchers will be placed on
teams based on their overall ball skills, their pitching and catching skills, and the number of pitchers
and catchers available for a given age group.
Players may try out for the next oldest age group (i.e. – a Peewee aged player trying out for
Bantam) as long as each of the following criteria are met:
 The player must be in his or her 2nd year in their age group.
 The player must evaluate in the top 6 players in the older age group at tryouts.
 If the player does not evaluate in the top 6, their evaluation will be used for team placement
in their original age group.
Zone 1 Hustlers tryouts are evaluated by independent evaluators not affiliated with our zone.
Season of Play
Once teams are selected, teams will have their first practices indoors (usually school gyms). League
play starts the first week of May and ends around the last week of June with the League
Championship tournament. Each Team will play 16 league games – usually 2 per week. The
Provincial Tournaments are held at the end of June through mid-July depending on age group. All
Division A and B Teams play in Provincials. Division A and B Teams are finished their seasons after
Provincials with 2 exceptions – If the Pee Wee A or Bantam A teams qualify for Canadian
Championships or Peewee B or Bantam B teams qualify for Western Championships.

Divisions
Division A Expectations
Division A Teams play 2 games during the week, practice 1-2 times per week, and often attend
tournaments on weekends. Division A Teams play 16 league games plus City Playoffs, attend
3-5 weekend tournaments (some out of town overnight), Provincial Championships, and possibly a
Western Canadian (Peewee and Bantam) or National (Peewee and Bantam) Tournament which
would extend the season until mid August. There is a $375 team fee payable to the zone for costs of
diamond upkeep, higher league fees and equipment. This fee will be included in the player
registration fee of $240. Team fundraising is essential and some teams ask for startup player fees
($150-$250).
Division B and Open Expectations
Division B Teams play 16 league games plus a weekend playoff tournament, practice at least once per
week, and play in 3-4 tournaments, and Provincials. There is a $350 team fee payable to the zone for
costs of diamond upkeep, higher league fees and equipment. This fee will be included in the player
registration fee of $240. Playing on a Division B Team still requires a financial commitment, therefore
team fundraising is essential and some teams ask for startup player fees ($100-$200). Division B
Teams are required to provide their own umpires for league games (i.e. a parent, relative, etc).
Division C (if available)
There has not been a “C” league in Saskatoon for 5 years, but the expectations are less stringent
than Division A or B.
Selection of Head Coaches
Those people who wish to Head Coach must complete and submit an application by February 1 st.
Application forms are available on the Hustlers Website. Please send your completed application to
the Zone Commissioner. Coaching Clinics are available and encouraged for those interested in
coaching, see the following link:
http://www.softball.sk.ca/english/our-programs/coaching/nccp-coaching-clinics.html.
The Hustler Zone will reimburse all coaching clinic fees. A 5-member sub-committee from our Zone 1
Executive Committee will perform the selection of Head Coaches, and will be chaired by the Zone
Commissioner. Prospective Head Coaches need to commit to our zone’s Coaching Guidelines (found
on our website), and must submit an annual Criminal Record check to the Zone Coordinator.
Uniforms and Apparel
Uniforms will be handed out once teams are selected. Players are responsible for the safe return
of the uniform at the end of the season. Team Managers will be responsible for collecting uniform
deposit cheques ($75, post-dated August 1st), which may be cashed if the uniform is not returned
in good condition. Our Zone is in very good shape with respect to Uniforms and all of our players
can wear the Hustler Crest proudly in 2017. Players will also require pants, socks, hats,
undershirts, batting helmets, etc. These Items are considered personal items and will need to be
purchased by the players. All of these items, along with other Hustler apparel items (ie. shorts,
sweats, hoodies, jackets etc.) can be purchased or ordered via our online ordering system at Al
Anderson’s, available here: https://hustlers.itemorder.com.
