Friend
• It is important for a coach to be a friend as they will have to give
advice to players.
• The coach need to make a bond between players so the players want
to play for him.
• If a coach is respectful, then the players will more likely play for him
• A good example of a coach who has shown this role is pep Guardiola,
this is because he has a very good relationship with players he
coaches, such as Lionel Messi who was only 20 when Guardiola
started coaching Barcelona, in his four years of managing Barcelona
he grew a strong relationship with Messi.
Educator
• The coach in the position of trainer will work with an athlete who is
learning new skills.
• It is the coach's job to put his learners the different exercise in which
they can improve their game.
• The coach will closely watch his player train to see what they need to
improve their technique.
• The coach will share his own knowledge with his players.
Role model
• As a coach you must present yourself as a role model in different ways.
• You must be presentable and approachable towards the participants and
towards parents and even spectators.
• The way you conduct yourself, such as your body language and posture
whilst in the presence of your athletes provides an example of how they
should behave.
• Another way that a coach can be a role model to their learners could be
what they have achieved in their past.
• For example if their coach was a great footballer and was very successful.
His learners will want to be like him.
Innovator
• A good coach must be an innovator because they must make sure
that their learners do not get bored, stay interested and want to be
the best at what they do.
• It is coach's innovative to develop new ways to encourage players,
whether by showing a video or giving a speech.
• A coach must create different and creative dills and methods that
build on and encourage team member knowledge and ability.
Responsibilities – legal obligations
• As a football coach it is their responsibility to spot any signs of abuse
amongst any participants. It is vital, that the coach is able to recognize
the signs of abuse and know what to do if they suspect anything.
• Also it is the coach's responsibility not to abuse the children in their
own care by bullying or criticizing them in front of their peers.
• They must also make sure that they do not expose your children to
extremes of weather, leave their children unsupervised or train them
in an over intense or in a way inappropriate to their age.
• Coaches should have appropriate insurance that covers both public
liability and personal accidents.
Health and safety
• Coaches must ensure that all reasonable steps have been taken to
ensure a safe working environment.
• Facility and equipment must be checked for any sort of hazard, if a
hazard is found the danger must be removed.
• This means that the work done should be kept in practice with the
standards required by the National Governing Body.
Professional conduct
• As a coach it is important that you look and act professional, this is what is called the
Code of Professional Conduct.
- Always conduct themselves to the highest level of responsibility.
-Treat all participants with absolute dignity, confidentiality and respect as free and equal
individuals.
-Maintain a good reputation of the knowledge in the sport that you are coaching.
-Respect the absolute right of any of the participants confidentiality, which is also
required by law.
- Recommend different resources or advise when these will be more appropriate to the
client’s needs.
- Share skills and experience with participants to further increase the body of knowledge,
skills and ability.
Equal opportunities
• As a coach, in the sessions they need to create and friendly
environment.
• A coach needs to make sure that they create an environment in which
all have equal opportunities to engage in sport, whether as
participants, competitors or volunteers.
• A good coach needs to respond to the diverse needs, capabilities and
preferences of each and every participant, by ensuring appropriate
levels of equality.
• Also they need to overcome potential barriers for those individuals
and groups currently under-represented as participants.
Skills – verbal communication
• As for a coach communication is the key of success.
• It is the coach's job to motivate the athletes they are teaching and to
provide them with information and experience that will allow them to
train effectively and improve performance and ability.
• Communication from the coach to athlete will help to improve at
whatever they are learning .
• This is an important part of coaching because it requires the athlete
to receive the information from the coach but also to understand
Non verbal communication
• While the coach is speaking, it is very important that his students
listen.
• If the coach has poor posture and doesn't show any enthusiasm
towards him students when talking their is a chance that the students
will not listen.
• Smooth flow of communication can come from such behavior which
includes head-nods, smiles, frowns, bodily contact, eye movements,
laughter, body posture, language and many other actions.
• The facial expressions of athletes provide feedback to the coach.
Time management
• As a coach, time management is important from turning up on time to how
long a training session lasts.
• This is an important skill because, time management links in with being a
role model.
• If the coach turn up late for a training session, this will look bad and have a
negative effect on their students, they may start turning up late.
• During a training session it is important that the coach plans each drill
well, and how long they last.
• It is important that they do not last too long and the coach over does the
participants and they get bored.
• It is also important they are not too short. They coach need to bring out
the best in their students and to improve their ability.
