Jamie Whyatt
Jamie (39) joined the logistics industry at the age of 17 as an apprentice with Ariel Maritime
Ltd. Two years later he moved on to project specialists Tuscor Lloyds and, over the next 6
years, developed into being one the of region’s leading lights, focused specifically on the oil
and energy sector. Jamie was headhunted by Cardinal Maritime in 1999 and set about
developing a specialised offering within the Cardinal Maritime Group focused on this sector.
His success was immediate and he was soon promoted to brand Managing Director of his
newly developed brand, Origin Logistics. Jamie now sits on the Board of Directors and is an
equity partner, holding 10% of the Group’s shareholding. Jamie’s experience demonstrates
the advantages and rewards of dedicating the best years of his career to the entrepreneurial
thinking within the Cardinal Maritime Group.
“Joining Cardinal gave me the opportunity to take my career to the next level and beyond.
The business gave me the chance to establish and grow the Origin brand, gaining priceless
experience along the way, creating jobs and teaching others. I would never have believed
14 years ago that I would be where I am today, which is a credit to the business and its
continued investment in people.”
Rick White
Rick (41) was headhunted by Cardinal Maritime in 2003 and joined the business with 14
years’ prior experience within the industry, latterly with Japanese service provider NNR.
Rick’s appointment was as Import Manager for the fast developing retail brand, Cardinal
Plus and his experience helped shape the department into one of the UK’s fast growing
businesses within the sector. In 2010 Rick celebrated a significant promotion and was
charged
with
the
responsibility
to
head
up
the
Group’s
wholesale
brand,
CardinalMaritime.com as brand Managing Director. The brand is reputed to be one the
country’s leading wholesale service providers and has recently opened offices in Ireland,
Holland and South Africa. Rick now holds a position on the Board and was recently gifted
shares in the business as a reward for the successful contribution he continues to make to
the Cardinal Maritime Group. Rick has demonstrated a unique ability to transfer skills from
one vertical market to another and is now charged with leading his brand’s development
into foreign fields which is hugely exciting for the Group and has been incredibly rewarding
for Rick.
“My time with Cardinal has been enormously rewarding and fulfilling; the cliché that hard
work pays rings very true for me. Never short of opportunity to demonstrate my worth to
the business, working for Cardinal has accelerated my development personally and
professionally, far outweighing my expectations.”
Chris Bartram
Chris (35) joined Cardinal Maritime in 2010 as a documentation clerk working within the
brand CardinalMaritime.com, with no prior experience within the logistics sector. Chris’s
obvious and inspiring creative flair soon caught the attention of his colleagues and the
senior management team within the business. In order to allow Chris to be free to express
his ideas more fully and to develop his natural creative talent, he was transferred into our
marketing team focused on developing the communication strategy across all brand
activity within the business. Chris is now responsible, as the department manager, for all
internal and external social media communication, the company’s websites and all
marketing activity within the Group. Chris is continuing to develop his role and experience
within the marketing suite and is currently studying on a post-graduate course, funded by
the Company, named “Squared Online”, which is a Google initiative and training
programme. In a short time with the Company, Chris has been able to accelerate his career
in a direction quite different to that he joined the Company to pursue. This demonstrates
Cardinal Maritime’s unique ability to tailor roles specific to the character and natural talent
of its employees.
“Cardinal has given me unparalleled freedom to take my career in a new direction,
recognising my strengths and providing unique opportunities to develop. The company
ethos of continual learning for professional growth is really worth celebrating.”
Peter Cavanagh
Peter (31) was recruited by Cardinal Maritime in 2005 to work within the rapidly expanding
import department within the retail brand, Cardinal Plus. His natural ability, operational
mind-set and stand-out interpersonal skills soon became obvious to those around him and
within 4 years of his joining the business, he was positioned as the Senior Import Manager.
Having presided over the almost doubling in size of the department within a 24 month
period, Peter was invited by the Board to commence a series of training and personal
development initiatives which included the world celebrated ‘Dale Carnegie’ programme.
Peter was recently promoted to the position of Operations Director within the Cardinal Plus
brand and is responsible for overseeing the exciting development of this incredibly
important activity within the Group. Once again, Peter’s experience demonstrates the
willingness of the Company to develop and reward natural talent. Peter’s training and
development have helped focused his underlying capability and ambition culminating in his
celebrated appointment as Operations Director.
Katie Thomas
Katie (21) was recruited by Cardinal Maritime within our apprentice programme at the age
of 19. Having excelled in her initial role as an operations clerk within the consolidation
department of CardinalMaritime.com, her natural ability soon became obvious to her
colleagues and the senior management team within her brand.
Having successfully
complete NVQ levels 2 & 3 (Business Administration) during her time with Cardinal
Maritime, the business - in consultation with Katie - decided her excellent interpersonal
skills would be best suited to our fast developing Full Container Load department. Since
being promoted into her new role, Katie has continued to demonstrate astute business
acumen and has helped contribute to an increase of 35% in volume activity within her
team. Katie’s career will continue to be developed and supported by the Cardinal Training
Academy, which the business expects will result in her fully realising her true potential at
Cardinal Maritime. In just two years with Cardinal Maritime, Katie has clearly stolen the
march on many of her industry peers. She has not only progressed her academic
understanding and achievement, but has used this to its full potential within the working
environment, resulting in a well-deserved promotion.
