A RETURN TO THE BASICS DESPERATELY NEEDED
6th Xl 3
Old Tenisonians
5
A home fixture against the league leaders saw the 6th Xl give another shaky performance, lacking
in confidence and making too many defensive errors.
We got off to a great start with an ANDY SMITH special from 35 yards into the top corner but,
within five minutes, the lead was surrendered by a silly pass across the defence causing Tony Higgins to
back heel to the Tenisonian skipper, who accepted the gift, but our lead was restored by another long
range ANDY SMITH shot which wobbled past a surprised ‘keeper only for Tenisonians to equalise from
a near-post header from a corner just before half-time.
The game was there for the taking, even after Tenisionians went ahead for the first time in the
first minute of the second half after a four man move. We still looked good going forward but all too often
gave the ball away unnecessarily.
We equalised to make it 3-3 after a good attack left SIMON LEDGER to volley home from 30
yards – a great strike. The difference between the two sides was Tenisonian’s ability to pass the ball,
something the 6th Xl struggled all game to do!
Their fourth goal came from another corner which was headed to a Tenisonian player, who made
no mistake, and the game was put beyond our reach when a short goal-kick, probably not out of the
area, was intercepted for a tap-in. We were left to play some reasonably attacking football, but the
Tenisonians’ ‘keeper was quite sound.
With a semi-final in two weeks, the 6th Xl need to tighten up at the back and try to restore some
confidence by playing a simple passing game; easier said than done!

IT WILL BE DIFFERENT IN THE CUP
Strand Hollingtonians 1 3rd Xl 3
A poor result against a very poor side. Strand had a couple of chances, with Kelvin Wing pulling
off two good saves but then completely misjudged a shot, which saw the ball end in the back of the net!
You would have thought that this set-back would have kicked the 3rds into action, but we failed to
do anything constructive until ANDY PULLEN equalised with a tap-in.
The second half saw an improvement but we still looked very disjointed in our play. This week we
have a cup semi-final against East Barnet Old Grammarians, when we must raise our game and,
knowing the 3rd Xl as I do, I’m sure they will put this game behind them and win.

SIXES AVENGE CUP DISAPPOINTMENT
6th XI
2
Polytechnic 7th XI 1
The 6th Xl came into this fixture keen to make amends for last week’s defeat to Polytechnic 6’s
in the cup. With the league (and Spring Cup, of course) to now focus on, the team talk was about
converting good recent performances into three points from here on, and finishing what has been a
strong season so far on a high.
The match started at a good pace, both teams creating early chances that tested the two
defences. The game soon settled, though, with OWFC playing the better football and knocking the ball
around well, which was rewarded with a number of corners and throw-ins from good positions. Nick
Morley, getting his eye in ahead of the cricket season, saw his long throw from deep mid-wicket fly
straight into the net, a hair’s length away from getting a touch and being a legal goal.
Not to be outdone by Nick, STEVE LAWRENCE stepped up to score directly from the next
corner kick, after conjuring the perfect curl and dip that eluded all the outfield players and the opposition
‘keeper. The chances kept on falling for the home team, who were unlucky not to build on their lead,
Chris Scott having the best opportunity, his side-footed effort being met with a fine save -1-0 at half-time.
Polytechnic emerged in the second half with renewed vigour, pressing high in an attempt to grab
an early goal. Skipper Chris Charman, having proved his tactical nous on Football Manager 2017, rejigged the team, with Christian Buckle brought to the fore and Nick dropping to right-back to
accommodate him and, moments later, the pair combined, Nick crossing to CHRISTIAN BUCKLE, who
took the ball down and slotted home expertly to double the lead.
A period of sustained pressure followed for Polytechnic as they continued to chase that elusive
goal. ‘Keeper George Young saved well on the few occasions he was tested, collecting crosses and
long balls with great authority.
The 6th Xl were now playing mainly on the counter, and squandered a handful of chances to put
the game beyond all doubt. However, determined not to make the game too easy, a defensive lapse and
air-kick ten minutes from time gifted the opposition’s forward the ball on the edge of the box, and he
converted well with a nice curled effort going in off the post - 2-1. The first clean sheet of the season will
have to wait one more week, at least.
This set up a nervy end for the 6’s, though a collective defensive master class ensued with the
team soaking up the pressure superbly, dropping deeper and deeper in the process. Poly’s best chance
for an equaliser came as their striker found the ball at his feet in the six-yard box, only to be met by a
defensive shield created by Charman, Forbes and Phakey, who together somehow nicked the ball and
ushered it out of play.
The 6th Xl held on to record a well-deserved and important 2-1 victory against a Poly team sitting
in joint first place in the league. With a home game against local rivals West Wickham next week, we
have now set up an excellent platform from which to build.

FOURS GET THE CUP FINAL THEY WORKED FOR
4th Xl 2 Old Bealonians 0
After an early season offer of a trip to Ibiza, paid for by our resident CFO Prav if we won a cup,
getting to a cup final has been top of the list of priorities for a while, and disappointment in last week’s
semi final meant we had to bounce back; and quickly.
Much of the talk before the game was about keeping the same level of intensity but retaining
composure at the key moments. We displayed this from the start, with the hard work of the attacking
players forcing errors and winning the ball high up the pitch. Having decided that he fancied playing the
full match this week, Bradley was causing constant issues down the left and linking well with James to
create chances, forcing a number of smart saves from the ‘keeper.
A rare chance for Bealonians came as the ball broke to their striker, but ‘Chunk’ showed that he
is calmness personified and sent the striker on his way. Eventually some quick movement down the

right, and clever one twos, moved the ball over to PANICKER and a smart finish moved us one up - just
a shame that his wife and kids missed his best moment of the season!
At half time the message was clear; keep the pressure on and don't let this slip. Panicker, in
particular, was keen to inspire his watching children and pulled out a few step overs to show just how
good he could be. Bealonians were not too put off by this display of skill and pushed for an equaliser, but
the defence stayed resolute and, after weathering the storm, the 4’s put pressure back on the visitors.
Eventually we made this count and WATERIDGES’S goal scoring form in his new boots
continued as he expertly kneed the ball into the back of the net. At 2-0 the game looked all but done,
and even the opposition did not seem to be interested anymore, being more concerned with the local
nightlife.
Abdou and Skeemer came on to bring extra energy and continued to cause the opposition
problems, but we were not able to convert the chances to put some deserved gloss on the score-line.
The final whistle arrived and the celebrations kick started, and this was when Wateridge really showed
what the world had been missing as he fell off the dry January wagon in spectacular fashion.
Hard work and commitment from the early season has paid off, but the next few weeks will be
crucial in putting a run of form together for the final, and hopefully Yuved will manage to be in the country
for that game.

CUP RUN ENDS IN A PENATLY SHOOT OUT
1st Xl 1 Old Carthusians 1
The 1X1 were the hosts for the dominant force of the Arthurian League, Old Carthusians, on a
cold but sunny February afternoon. The boys knew they were in for a tough game and must stay 100%
committed if they were going to make the semi-finals of the A.F.A cup.
The first half saw the game played at high intensity by both teams. Old Carthusians were big and
dangerous from set pieces. After a few scares, with close headers going just wide or over ‘Eggy’s goal,
the 1st X1 started dealing with balls inside the box a lot better and dominated the first ball. Attacking
wise, only a few half chances from set plays caused the visitors any panic at the back.
The second half started with the 1st X1 looking to assert their dominance going down the slope
against the visitors, who were seemingly beginning to tire, and some real chances came for the 1st X1.
Firstly, a ball in from the left found Gravensande, who poked the ball onto the crossbar and then, in the
final few seconds, Sellman saw himself through, with the quick full back chasing him down. Sellman
squared the ball to Chids, who slotted the ball under the ‘keeper, only for it to be miraculously saved by
the full back on the line at full stretch. ‘Eggy’ then pulled off a fine save, tipping the ball over the bar
after a good move down the right from the visitors.
No goals saw the game go to extra time.
Extra time saw us on the front foot once again. A ball from the left by Karamath found
Gravensande, and this time his attempt was denied by an excellent block from the goalkeeper.
GRAVENSANDE finally got his goal ten minutes into extra time when he brilliantly powered a header
home from an OZ corner - 1-0 first half.
The second half, and Carthusians started chucking balls into the 1st X1’s box from all angles.
Devastatingly for the hosts, after dealing with the pressure so well so far, a lapse in concentration right at
the death saw the visitors equalise with a headed goal from a corner. Full time 1-1
A penalty shootout concluded this quarter final and it was Old Carthusians who showed more
quality on the spot, tucking away four out of their five penalties to win the contest 4-2
The focus for the 1st Xl is now to take one league game at a time, win, and who knows how high
we will finish! A disappointing day, but we must not give up.
