Top 80% of the players for a given tier are guaranteed and must be selected for the tier. For example, on
a 15 player team, 12 players would be protected (15 * 0.8 = 12).
An additional 20% will be added to the draft envelop. For instance if 15 players are required for a team,
coaches may select from the top 18 players (15 * 0.2 = 3)
Fractional numbers of 0.5 or greater shall be rounded up, otherwise it will be rounded down.
In the example of a 15 player team, the first 12 players must be drafted, the 6 players remaining in the
draft envelop can be chosen from at the coach’s discretion.
Players preferred position (from the registration form) will be provided on a best effort basis.
Head Coach from each team is to be included in the team selection. If the head coach is unavailable the
draft is delayed until such time as the selection can be made. Exceptions can be made with board
approval.
Head coach may pre-select 1 assistant coach from the approved coaches list prior to the draft. The
assistant coach’s child must be in the protected list or the draft envelop. Coordinators must ensure all
teams have adequate coaching.
All coach(es) shall protect his or her own child/children
The coach with the lowest sum of child(ren)’s evaluation score shall pick first. If the coaches do not agree
on first pick then this will be at coordinator's discretion.
Prior to the selection process the draft will be rebalanced as a result of the coaches protected players
(coaches children).
One trade may occur at the end of the draft at coordinator discretion.
Coordinators may require trades at their discretion to ensure balanced teams.
NEW: At the end of the draft, in an effort to increase affiliation, coordinators will facilitate:
1. A possible affiliate list: Coaches will identify players on their team who would be good candidates
for affiliation. This information will be passed on by coordinators to coaches at higher tiers and
levels.
2. An affiliate draft: Coordinators will document the results of this draft on the respective teams’
affiliation forms. Coaches will follow up with parents and coaches of the drafted affiliates to get
signatures and will submit the completed forms to SMHA and the Zone.
Initiation Team Selection
1.
Players for both beginner and advanced will be ranked by the coordinator
2.
Simplified rankings will be used: 1-3-5
3.
Teams will be selected by the coaches and coordinator must ensure that rankings are evenly distributed
across all teams
a.
For better clarity it is not based on averages but rather rankings (similar number of 1’s, 3’s,
and 5’s on each team)
