U13 Basketball Commitment Letter 2016-2017

November 4, 2016
U13 Basketball Candidates & Parents,
Welcome to the 2016/2017 U13 Basketball Program. This letter outlines the Athletic
Department’s Mission, expectations and logistical details of this year’s basketball season.
Upper Canada College Preparatory School seeks to provide a high quality
athletic experience for all, with the goal of developing outstanding character, and
the skills and attitudes to enjoy a lifetime of healthy living.
The Tryout Process
Tryouts are about to start for the Winter season U13 Basketball teams. Your son has
expressed an interest in being part of the program. There will be two teams at the U13 level,
each with approximately12 players. Players will be selected not just on their skill level, but
also on their attitude, ability to listen and follow directions, a willingness to learn and try new
things and their overall contribution to the team.
It is always a difficult experience not to be included on a team roster. Parents can help their
son learn from the experience by praising his best effort, and encouraging him to understand
the reasons why he was not selected. By improving in these areas, it is not uncommon for
these same players to challenge incumbents next year.
The first team selection will be posted on the basement notice board. Players who are not
selected for the team are encouraged to report to try outs for other school teams
(Swimming). Final team selection will be made by Tuesday, November 22 , 2016. At that
time, all remaining players will be informed in person of whether they are on the team and if
not, what their athletic options are.

Team Commitment
A strong commitment is required of all members of any school representative team. We
understand that many boys have outside commitments, especially during the Winter season.
We have discussed the Prep policy regarding absences from games with your son and we will
outline it again here. We expect each player on the team to participate in every scheduled
game. A player may miss only two games due to an outside commitment, but he must notify
us well in advance of the game date. If your son becomes ill or injured and is unable to attend
a game, notify the coach as soon as possible via phone and/or e-mail. We recognize that
absences due to illness or injury are not related to team commitment.
No player may miss any of the following dates for any reason other than illness:
A Team
February 2nd - 4th, 2017 (CAIS National Tournament at Hillfield Strathallan
College – Hamilton, ON)
Saturday, March 4 , 2017 (CISAA Championships)

Important:
1. In addition, all U13A and U13B players are expected to score and time-keep the
U12 basketball tournament at UCC on Fri. Jan. 13 and Sat. Jan. 14, 2017
2. Some U13A team members will also be asked to billet two players from a traveling
team during the CAIS National Tournament. This will likely be on Feb. 1st, 2nd
and 3rd. Note that all players should be willing to do this.

Team Schedules and Communication
The most efficient way to access information about the team and schedule is through the new
UCC athletic website. It is possible that that this schedule will change as the season
progresses due to weather and other unforeseen circumstances. Any change will be
announced to your son as soon as possible and updated on the website.
Blues Booster Club
Each team will be looking to make the most of parental community support. Specifically, the
parent-based Blues Booster Club, in collaboration with the school, will be seeking parent
volunteers to get involved in a way that will be outlined when team selections have been
completed.
Uniform and Expenses
The team uniform includes:
 Team jersey and shorts (loaned to players for the season for a nominal charge)
 Warm-up jersey (loaned to players for the season)
 UCC Track Suit
 White athletic socks
 Basketball shoes
 Water bottle
Students who do not wear their full uniform will travel with the team but they will be unable
to play.
As with all UCC Representative teams, travel costs and uniform expenses will be billed to
team members’ accounts (approximately $200 for both teams).
Sincerely,
David Fraser (U13-A)
